Thought Smudge looked out of place personally, first half we were second best all over the pitch but still missed the best chance of the half. They scored from nothing with a worldie finish. Second half we were well on top and really should have got something but oh well, them's the breaks. Don't score clear cut chances against higher league teams and you get punished.

Leeds chairman is sat on the train back to St Pancras surrounded by Leeds fans. Disappointingly the Leeds fans are a bit meek, I was expecting a riot.

Pretty devastated to lose 14-13 on penalties. The longer it goes on the less you think about how you 'did well to get this far' though their quality showed in the period they had a lead to defend, we were arguably the better side and win would have been a well-deserved one. Now the other 91 clubs have another year to wait to find out if it is possible to beat Carlisle in normal time in the League Cup (hint: it's not)

And that's the League Cup over for this division, surprising really I'm sure we had a fair few in Round 3 last year.

Still pretty much unbeaten. Time will tell if 120 minutes plus a 27 penalty shootout will take its toll going into Saturday, KC assures us it won't. Either way, a good night all in all despite the loss. What has happened to Jabo though, he's looking like the player we signed prior to him deciding to score loads of goals.

He hasn't really had the best of starts to the season with his injury though, I think just before the start of the season is the absolute worst time to get injured, you miss the last week of training before the season starts which pre-season has been building towards and miss out too as the new signings settle in to the team and then have to try and come back into a side that's come on a lot in the time you've missed. It must be especially true of strikers, they often take a while to find their feet in a new side, and the same may be true if they're in the same club but a lot of new players have come in around them, he hit the ground running last season but that doesn't always, or even often, happen.

Thought 3-1 flattered Hull if I'm honest. It's a shame we couldn't hold on to our lead for longer than a minute but even at 1-1, we had spells in the game where we were on top. Can't be too disappointed at losing to a Prem side, but on another day we could have won.

Ethan Ampadu was class again. Crazy to think how good he could become.

Really, thought Smith was great. Both chances Marriott missed were off the back great passes from him, the first in particular was a super ball.

He had his usual mis controls and what have you but did his job well I thought.

On another note, and I've said it before and I'll definitely say it again, O'donnells crossing.... Deary me. He even gave up at the end and just started playing it square.

Slightly disappointed with how things panned out tonight. Another 2 goal lead blown, even if it was to a Championship side. But saying that, 3 goals scored, a late equaliser to force extra time, scoring goals, giving them a real scare. I'll take that. Now just have to get the league form up and running.

Whoever was running Derby County's website must have decided to knock off early after 94 minutes. Just adds to the disappointment of not beating them.

You're right about the two passes for the chances, didn't realise the first one was Smudger at the time. Just seen the highlights and it was a sensational pass (and awful miss from Jack!). But other than two moments of uncharacteristic quality I thought the game passed him by and his control and short passing was about what you'd expect (i.e. not good enough for a possession-based style). Bit harsh maybe but I lost count of the number of times he hooked it aimlessly into channels whenever put under pressure, and he struggled to impose himself defensively (to be fair it's difficult to chase a Championship team around when not in possession).

And yes, O'Donnell's crossing is laughably bad. Shame because I thought he had a good game generally tonight, as soon as he hits that final third though his brain turns to mush and his right leg turns into a hot dog. Frustrating because he gets into good areas so often and has a great engine on him. We have to improve the service from the wing backs going forwards this season or replace them if they can't develop that aspect of their game.

Loads of positives overall tonight though. McGeehan had a great game, keeper was very good, Rea looked solid (indeed the whole back four acquitted themselves well). Just hope the two bad misses don't knock Marriott's confidence too much, he's a fantastic instinctive finisher when in form and a slight worry is he might start overthinking it next time he gets a chance. I wouldn't rest him on Saturday though, he's still taking up great positions (other than the misses he had a good game tonight) and sooner or later he will bury one and then he'll be off again.

By all accounts he played well on Saturday. Was he particularly bad tonight?

Don't write off little accrington just yet. Burnley might put their reserves out

And let's not rule out the league leaders. Bournemouth have a long trip to make and I'm sure Howe will make plenty of changes.

Well that was an amazing night, pushed Chelsea all the way in the second half, Chelsea deserved it but only by a whisker. Fantastic support by us, think they need to hand out song sheets to the home supporters only about a fifth knew any songs.

So much better from us last night, feared at 2-0 so early it was going to be a mauling but we fought like hell and should've taken the game to extra time. Full backs are still terrible and I fear Williamson will be out on his feet for Saturday, but we have to carry that performance into the league now and get the season going.

Morecambe away tonight for us. Fair play to whoever from our lot makes that trip on a Wednesday! I can't, much as I'd like to tick the ground off.

They've started the season well, we haven't so much it must be said, although I don't know how relevant that is when we'll sadly make at least 9 changes, maybe even 11. But there's a chance for Morecambe to take advantage of any disjointedness.

Great night, so gutting to go out on penalties though. The whole team put in so much effort, and deserved to take it to extra time - what a goal by Jones, couldn't quite believe it when it hit the back of the net.

It took an age to get home, but I'd say it was worthwhile. Great atmosphere too, nice to see Asamoah in amongst the away fans.

Regarding last night's penalties is a curiosity about there only being ten penalty takers.

It's probably well known that if one team ends the match with ten men through either dismissal or injury then the other team must also take off a player before the shoot-out. The reason for this is that if they didn't then their 11th penalty would be taken by their worst penalty taker while their opponents 11th would have cycled back around and be taken by their best; handing a significant advantage to the team with ten men.

I've seen the Derby fans bring this up as the actual wording of the rules is that the player taken off can't play any part in the shoot-out, including as goalkeeper. Therefore we shouldn't have been able to have Gillespie not take a penalty yet still play in goal, we should have taken Raynes (who was our tenth taker) off.

However the other thing is that Derby actually didn't end the game with ten men on the pitch, they had eleven men right up until the final whistle and then at some point between Derby naming their penalty takers and when he was supposed to take a penalty (presumably cramp) Johnson became injured, hence the delay before Raynes' penalty as the referee tried to decide what to do.

So while the letter of the law may say that we shouldn't have been allowed to remove Gillespie from our penalty takers and yet still play him in goal, you may also argue that the cramped up Johnson, having already been named as their tenth penalty taker, should have been forced to hobble up to the spot after Raynes had put his penalty away and tamely tap the ball for Gillespie to collect.

As much as I might have liked to see that it would have felt hollow as victories go and I feel the referee deserves some credit for using his noggin even if Curle was going mad about the length of the delay before Raynes' penalty.

A 2-0 loss at Newcastle isn't too bad on paper, but it's a bit disappointing we beat ourselves with rubbish defending for both goals rather than it being their quality that beat us. Matched them for the first half but conceding right before and after half time just killed the game and Newcastle cruised it from then on.

What a night too tired and excited to break the game down yet, but an unbelievable achievement to beat a premier league side from next door. Bring on west ham

Interesting that Accrington could have been chucked out after playing a ringer in first round but just got a fine instead.

It's good to see the remaining League One and Two sides got decent ties.

Derby got Liverpool at home, and by my calculations we'd have been away to Leicester had we progressed. Oh well.

Well we had a right good go but fell just short. I thought we just about deserved another 30 minutes but we couldn't take one of the 2 or 3 decent chances in the final quarter of what was a very good open game.

Great atmosphere inside the ground which will hopefully see a few of the occasional fans returning.

Looking forward to Accrington away on Saturday which might turn out to be survival of the fittest with only a couple of days to prepare.

The referee's body is investigating the other night's shootout as they feel the referee may broken the laws of the game. I presumed that the laws of the game would have required the injured Derby player to take a penalty but apparently not, you can take a player off injured after the shoot-out has started.

Though Carlisle aren't claiming Derby gained an advantage Curle isn't happy with the situation, arguing that if you can do that you could claim injury to save any players who simply don't want to take a penalty at all from taking one.
