Quietly spending billions while we all moan about Salford

Most teams have gotten going now.

Scunthorpe and Crewe both still making fairly minor changes, tweaking rather than overhauling the side that went down.

Salford biding their time it seems. I think most people would have expected them to have spent big by now and have won the race to sign several in-demand players. Think we were expecting them to built a new team from scratch made of experienced League One and Two and SPL players.

Colchester, Plymouth and Mansfield making eye-catching marquee signings but not looking to change a whole lot. I guess are all just looking to do what they were doing last season, but better.

The teams most people are tipping to struggle are the ones who don't seem to be strengthening much. Morecambe seem to be trading like-for-like, Cambridge have lost some big names they don't look like replacing and Macclesfield have their hands tied right now. Only Carlisle making big changes but looking light up front.

Orient look somewhat weakened, and the tragic loss of Edinburgh may account for a lack of inward movement; not unusual though for a promoted side to lose a couple of major players and their signings may prove astute.

Walsall and Northampton both quick off the mark and looking to make wide-ranging changes, and one or two really decent signings. Northampton featured highly in early promotion predictions because of this yet Walsall have flown under the radar a bit, perhaps because of losing Cook.

Newport making a decent fist of things it appears as most expected them to be severely weakened and unable to replicate last season.

Everyone else, nobody stands out in particular. Bradford, seem to be generally strengthening an already strong squad. Exeter and FGR having lost key players are strengthening and replacing. Swindon are active in the loan market but otherwise haven't done a lot. Grimsby not changing a lot though they have made a couple of interesting signings. Crawley, Cheltenham, Oldham, Port Vale and Stevenage making a few changes but not seeming especially weakened nor strengthened.

There are a number of unknown quantities knocking about. Players new to this division who don't catch the eye on paper but any of them could turn out to be the signing of the season. A fair bit of movement within the division too by players who didn't impress at one club yet were quickly snapped up by a rival club.

Thanks for taking the time to put the list up, and keep updating it. A quick glance down it suggests that most clubs have offloaded more players than they have brought in, which of course can be for a multitude of reasons. I suspect for some it is to reduce the number of players on their books but increase the quality, this seems to have been our approach over the past couple of seasons, certainly backed up by our activity in the transfer market in recent weeks.

Still plenty of time to bring in new players before the season begins but I guess most teams would rather have assembled their squad before pre-season begins. Times have certainly changed for us, not too long ago our players had ten month contracts and we spent pre-season trying to sign players...any players!...but just this week signed Liam Kitching on a three year deal.

Can't wait for the season to begin already!

Two good signings there, we had Ward on loan last season and he is a decent keeper, I have heard people around these parts talking about Smerdon being a decent defender already and a bright prospect for the future...wouldn't be surprised if we had taken a look at him as he fits into the Cooper mould.

Ward does seem very good but the friendlies so far suggest that our other new ‘keeper, Jonny Maxted is going to start as number 1. Either way, we have two very good options to choose from.

Smerdon is an exciting prospect, but Taylor has said he will look to loan him out for the first part of the season at least to ensure he gets regular games. Perhaps Torquay or Yeovil could be likely destinations.
