Yeah, the Wheater transfer doesn't seem to have materialised yet.

What the crack with strikers in this window.

We haven't signed any, and we don't have any. We already implied several weeks ago that we'd most likely have loanees up front, as strikers of the calibre we need just aren't available at our budget.

Is this true? I had a look at the forwards signed in this window in league two on transfermarkt. All free transfers unless stated otherwise.

James Vaughan (Wigan > Bradford)
Clayton Donaldson (Bolton > Bradford)
Harvey Knibbs (Aston Villa > Cambridge)
Tahvon Campbell (FGR > Cheltenham)
Reuben Reid (FGR > Cheltenham)
Ashley Nadesan (Fleetwood > Crawley)
Bez Lubala (Birmingham > Crawley)
Nicky Ajose (Charlton > Exeter)
Alex Fisher (Yeovil > Exeter)
Moses Ogbu (Al-Ain > Grimsby)
James Hanson (Wimbledon > Grimsby)
Matt Green (Salford > Grimsby)
Lee Angol (Shrewsbury > Orient) undisc.
Conor Wilkinson (D&R > Orient) undisc.
Jacob Blyth (Barrow > Macclesfield)
Joe Ironside (Kidderminster > Macclesfield)
Nicky Maynard (Bury > Mansfield)
Andy Cook (Walsall > Mansfield)
Michael Howard (Preston > Morecambe)
Cole Stockton (Tranmere > Morecambe)
Corey Whiteley (Ebbsfleet > Newport)
Matthew Warburton (Stockport > Northampton)
Vadaine Oliver (Morecambe > Northampton)
Harry Smith (Macclesfield > Northampton) undisc.
Desire Azankpo (FK Senica > Oldham) undisc.
Dom Telford (Bury > Plymouth)
Mark Cullen (Blackpool > Port Vale)
Richie Bennett (Carlisle > Port Vale)
Florian Yonsian (Rochdale > Salford) undisc.
Jason Cowley (Bromsgrove > Stevenage)
Jerry Yates (Rotherham > Swindon) loan
Elijah Adebayo (Fulham > Walsall)

But as we all know, strikers - or most players at our level - don’t command a fee. It’s down to contract length and wages - with location also a factor.

Yeah I didn't mean to make it sound that their all being free transfers was contradictory to us saying they were out of our price range; it just saved me writing 'free' after most of them.

Carlisle have the third lowest percentage in the whole of the 92, only crisis-clubs Bury and Bolton have seen more of last season's side depart. This was made before Nathan Thomas returned, but that only lifts Carlisle up to 29% and still as one of only three clubs below 30%. One of those big chunks is Kelvin Etuhu who is out long-term injured too.

Interesting stats, not sure what's best to be honest a high percentage or not. I guess it depends on how you did last season and the league your now in. For us for instance it's probably good keeping a high percentage as we finished the last half of the season as one of the better teams. Crawley and Vale struggled so a bigger turnaround would probably have been better for them.

that won't include Ben Whitfield who is likely to leave before saturday, other than that we cleared out everyone who we needed to.

I think we have done the right thing, although we were not quite harsh enough when releasing players, one or two spring to mind where we can do better with our budget.

Cracking business by Mansfield though, we’ve only paid one fee and that was minimal beyond belief, mere change in Big Johns massive to scale piggy bank.

Mansfield is missing Aiden Stone, Kellan Gordon btw - not sure about James Clarke because the club did not even announce it despite him expected to be part of the first team.

we've added Matty Stevens from Peterborough (undisclosed).

Also I think you've put Dom Bernard twice, as far as I know there's only one ;)

Spoke to posh season ticket holder last night who said Matty Stevens should do ok in league 2 but not up to league 1 standard

Sounds logical tbf, if he was League 1 standard he probably wouldn't have come here. The hope is he's got potential to get to that level, got a good record in non league and is still pretty young.

Reminds me of a Gashead talking to me about Adam Smith, saying "he's shit, but should be good enough for you" Lol.

Fees in the lower leagues are, partly, irrelevant. It’s the wages offered that’s eye-watering in some cases.

Even at STFC Wellens reckons the 3 players he’s trying to offload take up 25% of the entire budget!

We had a lot of deadwood but kept the core which wasn't too bad and have added the forward quality and pace needed mainly. We've done the huge over haul too often... the main things we needed to change to improve our fortunes were off the field and boy we've done that big style! No more Smurf, No more Negative Aspin and all the bad influences in the dressing room are gone.
