I would have thought the reasons were obvious:-

A) The incident wasn't caught on camera. And...
B) The incident didn't involve English fans racially abusing a foreign national whilst in another country.

Plus, Chelsea fans have a history of racist issues, United don't. This will always result in more press coverage.

I don't think it really matters to be honest, but the lack of video evidence is probably the biggest factor. What the Chelsea fans did was wrong, and what these United fans did was equally wrong, regardless of publicity.

I understand higher publicity gives Chelsea - and particularly the fanbase - a bad name, but I think most people are right to think that these idiots are in the minority. The 'every club has its idiots' cliche is unfortunately a true statement.

Sigh. No, I said ONE of the reasons it hasn't received as much press is because the Chelsea incident involved the racial abuse of a French man in France by a group of English Chelsea supporters. This, in the eyes of the press and media at least, would be more newsworthy than the racial abuse of someone on a train in the UK. It shouldn't be but it is. But the main reason is still that it wasn't filmed, as both myself and Renegade said.

And of course it isn't a competition. Apart from to Blue_Bee of course judging by the opening post.

Just because one incident receives more media attention doesn't make it any more or less worse. Obviously all racism is equally bad.

I'm not sure there's much wisdom in judging actions by the way they're reported in the media. In fact there's fuck all wisdom in it. It's ridiculous.

Indeed, judging the actions themselves by the amount of coverage they receive would be ridiculous as one act of racism is as abhorrent as another. But it is possible speculate as to why one incident would receive more column inches and airtime than another without implying you view one of them as being worse. For example, in this case, the ability to present the video of the Chelsea fans committing the crime would make it more appealing to both the TV networks and papers. Should that be the case? Of course not, but that's the press for you.

Absolutely. There are a number of reasons that could explain the different levels of reporting, many of which have already been mentioned earlier in the thread.

My point really was that the whole notion of one incident being worse than the other is nonsense and has nothing to do with why they were reported differently.

United and their supporters have a long and proud tradition of opposing racism. There's racist idiots in every club. The way you've brough this to our attention though BB seems to me at least that you're more concerned about the Man U fans getting less opprobrium. It's quite ironic that you've posted this thread after recieving a warning about posting racist jokes. I dont for one second believe you give a flying fuck about the victim of the person racially abused in either of these incidents. Not defending the united fan he deserves to be locked up and banned at all but there's a world of difference between a train full of Chelsea fans signing racist songs and abusing a frenchman in france and one guy (other one was arrested for assault ) making racist comments which when/if found guilty will be banned.

Because there are a lot more incidents of racial abuse by individuals on trains in the UK than people would probably like to acknowledge, and they aren't caught on camera. They also aren't n the capital city of another country where a group of English fans racially abuse a national of that country there. Not difficult to understand BB.

1. These were two guys. A whole group of Chelsea fans pushed the man off the train. Chelsea's case was more of a disgrace and made more headlines because you generally don't see 10-15 men pushing a black man off a train, however you more often see 2 people being racist.
2. It wasn't caught on camera, so people don't really know the full extent of what they did.
