Particularly when he is more interested in making "statements" than picking a coherent side. Herrera at centre back was a message to Woodward, rather than a tactical decision.
Maybe, but I blame the current mess more on Woodward than Mourinho. Why give him a contract extension if you're not going 100% back him in the transfer window? We needed to let Jose build a team in his image if we wanted him to succeed. He's a dead man walking now.

I agree with everything you've said there - a result of that and more is that Mourinho's position is pretty much untenable.

The only thing I would say is that Jose shouldn't have to be making stupid statements with centre back selections when he was backed heavily to buy two of his own choosing in Bailly and Lindelof - if he barely trusts them enough to play them now why would you give him another £70 odd million to strengthen the same position again?

I understand Woodward's reticence in theory, even if I don't agree with him having the power to veto transfers in practice.

Bailly and Lindelof cost £30m each, we paid that for Rio in 2002. Look at the prices for van Dijk and Laporte, those are what it costs to get premium defenders these days. Bailly and Lindelof might turn out to be good in the end. But Bailly has played about 75 senior games, Lindelof likewise, both need work and aren't ready to be the leading CB in a title challenging team. I'd be interested to see either of them alongside a more experienced head.

He knew the centre backs he had, why buy two projects? Why not buy Bailly and the experienced head and forget about Lindelof until we are more settled in the area?

He surely couldn't have thought that Smalling, Jones or Rojo would be the dependable, calm head.

Well either he didn't think an elite CB was available at that time or the club wasn't willing to buy him one. I don't think we're willing to spend as big on defenders as we are on attacking players.

I thought United were going to piss that in the first half ,then came the second half and Jones turns his back to the play and Kane nods the opening goal ,if anything can change the direction of a football match its the opponent smelling A negative seeping from a defensive wound from a team who rarely offer a scent of blood let alone present a visible vein.

Spudz just turned up the pace of the game and used the gaps opening up in midfield to turn the screw ,In that second half Dembele was the best player on the pitch and brought a real calmness to the middle ,the stark contrast between him and Pogba was light and shade.

IMO he has officially lost it when he gets the buzzcut.

tbf to Mou, Pep bought bravo but he turned out to be shit. The club gave him more to money to improve that position. Toby would have made immense difference to your defense imo.

But Pep is completely bald and he is just fine, maybe Jose actually needs to razor his entire scalp off.
