It's a shame that Murray persists with McGuire though, the refs have had his name for some time now and he gets little leeway when others do, but it's time that he moves away from this next season, maybe the conference might work better for him.

Seemed to work better with the 442 though the lad from Chesterfield is shocking, hopefully Murray will address this in the summer - he needs to refresh his thinking as his home record and his record against the top sides remain shocking, it'll start to catch up with him if it doesn't change.

Was pleased to get a point out of this and have a real go, I think a few Northampton fans were surprised, but not nearly as much as the stags fans. Shame about the crowd being so low

Was a low crowd I thought, expected a bit more for a bank holiday!

I also actually didn't think Mansfield was that bad from what I saw, which admittedly was a two minute walk from car to pub.

The centre of Mansfield seemed alright to be fair, I think I was swayed by my journey out of Mansfield when I got lost about 6 times and took in some lovely housing estates. All towns have them!

I think we were surprised with our formation and team selection in the first half. I actually didn't think Mansfield were particularly good bar the couple of good deliveries into the box for the goals.

I also didn't realise the ground is the oldest professional ground in the country.

Aye you learn something new everyday, Sheffield FCs ground is older, but not professional. Surprised you got lost, no pun intended, but Mansfield is relatively easy to get out of. Will be a shame to lose you as one of our closer games next season, but Doncaster will be an excellent replacement

It was my own fault as I wasn't concentrating.

Thought the stewards at Mansfield were decent yesterday, makes a nice change from some grounds.

It is unusual especially when it would have been a second caution unless the advantage was an obvious benefit to the attacking side. The official has to weigh up this against the player committing another (third) mandatory cautionable offence or the ball going up the other end and the player scoring during the subsequent play, it is a risky judgement call...

No he doesn't. Once the player has committed the second yellow/red offence he is considered to be out of the game, even if the referee plays an advantage. If he gets involved in the play then the ball is considered to be dead, the game stopped and him sent off. It would then be an indirect free kick to the opposition from where he touched the ball.

Which LotG do you get that from?

I didn't. I know i'm acting all knowledgable but I only know this because I read this exact scenario in one of those 'ask the referee' things with a professional ref in the paper a couple of weeks ago, i'm not an advantage rule expert. :D

I dont think I have ever seen one man that plays for us who I expect to score every time he goes forward as much as Ricky Holmes. Considering he is a winger probably expect to much from him but he probably has a near 1 in 2 goal record this season.

I would like to see that because if you are correct in your interpretation of his answer, he is wrong.
I am an expert...

Got it, as I said he should have stopped play to issue the caution but the official has had the opportunity to play an advantage. Keith Hackett has given his 'interpretation' of the subsequent actions to get the official out of a potentially sticky situation. By the LotG he is incorrect, he should wait until the ball either goes dead or another infringement occurs before issuing the second caution, because he has played the advantage and the original infringement has been 'spent' apart from the caution. He is also incorrect in awarding an indirect free kick, the player hasn't done anything wrong in playing the ball because he hasn't been sanctioned yet. In this situation, if it would happen at all, it should be restarted with a drop ball.
In reality if this happened the official would probably allow the play to continue, pray that the player didn't score or if he did 'forget' about the caution and then face the Assessors rap after the game. That is why, in the majority of cases, all officials stop play immediately the second cautionable offence occurs or 'find' an infringement to stop play at the earliest opportunity and administer the second caution.

Very harsh decision to give a second yellow. The decision could just as easily have gone the other way. Unfortunately the ref had his name from the off and was looking for an opportunity to send him off as he has in a previous game. The Northampton lads knew this and were playing to it. No blame to them here just stating the obvious. Murray should never have started with him.
