Welcome Marco!.

I see from various reports Everton are releasing Rooney, Mirallas, Williams and Klaassen. Fair enough, but I would have liked Klaassen to have been given another chance.

Releasing? or selling. They must have a sell on value at least?

The right appointment, a clear pre season, be interesting to see what he can do over the next few years. The right infrastructure with the right investment and Everton should claw there way back up to a respectable level

Fell nicely into place for Everton. Even taking into the account the money they paid Mr. Middtable to stop the rot after Koeman and Unsworth they're still millions up on what they would have spent to take him off Watford last season.

Silva is a decent manager for a club like Everton. They're not a club who will challenge for the top 4 any time soon (or possibly ever when you look at the money now being spent by the big guns) but there is a decent chance he'll have them fighting for Europa spots within a season or two.

Without going over old ground in relation to Sam I do not understand the seeming obsession PL clubs have for this guy. Probably worth a mention in the merry go round thread but I don't see Silva lasting the season - Everton should've gone out and got a legit manager when they harshly dispensed of Sam otherwise what's the point, this Silva ain't shit.

I think Silva is a manager the Bitterz have needed for a while ,he plays expansive football and affords the more inventive players the room to play the expressive football fans have been crying out for. Sadly I suspect he will do well this season ,the derbies will be a welcome change in not having a collective of big yard dogs kicking lumps out of our attack.

Siguardsson looked good last week. A potentially great player who has been criminally miss used so far there.

With Rooney and all his palava moving on, this will give Sigurdsson his chance to show what he could do in an Everton shirt and they'll be better for it. There's a better balance to them this season but I still don't see that side breaking into the top six.

Depends really. Very early but only City, pool and Spurs really jump out as being significantly better during the early weeks so that's a good sign at least.

True. We'll need to wait till the league settles down a bit and see where everyone lies after 10 games or so. If Everton are still close to the top then, they could be on for a good season.

Please put me out of my misery one way or another.
In what way have we made any progress under our last few managers?

Statistically not much really .

Comparison after 21 games... Last season -

Everton had 7 wins, 27 points, scored 25 goals and conceded 32.

This season - 7 wins, 27 points, scored 31 goals, conceded 31.

Just typical Everton - Silva talked about pressure and feeling nervous.

Does he think the home fans are getting on the players backs too soon?

I can't say that I'm mega impressed by Silva but I still don't think the squad is right.

They've gone a bit the same way as Spurs did when they sold Bale. The Lukaku money has been splurged on a lot of players who are 7/10s rather than a couple of really prominent signings.

The squad that Koeman got 7th by 15 points had only one real notable difference from now - a goalscorer.

You just have to go position by position to see the lack of improvement.

Goalkeeper
A good investment in time probably with Pickford. But Stekelenburg was a pretty well rounded goalkeeper anyway. Has it improved them in the short term though? Perhaps margainly but not by much.

Defence
Digne is a good upgrade on an ageing Baines. However, you can't say that Zouma, Mina or Keane have particularly improved upon when Everton had a peak Phil Jagielka and Joleon Lescott/Sylvain Distin. It's just much of the same - perhaps even a bit weaker as I'm not a fan of Keane or Mina particularly.

Wide areas
Walcott on paper looked a good signing but he looks far inferior now that the quality around him isn't as strong. Without an Ozil to pick out his runs, he offers very little as he doesn't possess the skill or nous to work things on his own. Richarlison is a good investment. He's already nearing double figures despite the dross around him. He's only 21 and yes he still has poor games but there shouldn't be such a reliance on him. Bernard is all pretty dribbles and then zero end product. I've no idea why Lookman doesn't play more. Everton will lose him if they don't and that would be very silly. Is this an improvement on peak Pienaar or Mirallas? Richarlison is but he's having to play up front at present due to a lack of striker.

CM
I've long thought Everton need more quality in CM. Andre Gomes begins to strengthen that area although he needs 1-2 others in there with him giving him time and space. Gueye is meh for me. There are better DMs out there who offer more on the ball. You go back in time and see the likes of Barry (who was solid), Besic, Gibson, McCarthy etc and it's all a bit samey and uninspiring.

AM
Siggy is a good player although criminally underused last season. If only he had a good striker to play off of. Barkley was too inconsistent for Everton. I do think they've improved here although a better striker would really help make it all tick together.

Striker
The big weakness. Lukaku carried a team that in reality was miles away from the top 6 to within touching distance on many occasions. Replacements were and are a joke really. Koeman's answer was Sandro and a ton of AMs. Big Sam's answer was the under par Tosun. Silva hasn't really tried to answer that yet. This will make or break him because if he can unearth a 20 goal a season man, Everton will comfortably be 7th and will be in touching distance of an underperforming 6th place side. If he doesn't, then Everton will be inconsistent and finish around the 50-58 point mark every season.

So far, Silva has signed:
Digne, Richarlison, Bernard, Mina, Gomes and Zouma.
The first two are spot on. The middle two look more of the same to me. The latter two are solid acquisitions. It's an improvement on his predecessors. His signing of a striker makes or breaks him.

Just because the current players are on a par as their predecessors takes nothing away from their quality. You mentioned some seriously fine players who played for Everton under Koeman. That the current lot is on a par is quite logical all said and done as Everton are in and around 7th.
Don't think Silva is too bad really. Everton have a top 10 squad and are 10th. Don't see much wrong with that tbh.

A bit concerning that the only one making positive subs late on to try and win the game was the manager of a thread-bare squad struggling in the Championship. Everton were completely inept.
