In the course of a previous employment many years ago I had been in many fuck off manky houses. One had a puppy that was chasing a fucking rat, there was dog shit on the carpets. Others had kitchens that obviously hadn't had any form of cleaning done for months.....I refused the offer of a cup of tea, How these people accept that as 'normal' is beyond me. Cleanliness costs nothing but even that is too expensive for some people.

Sometimes extremely squalid conditions can be a symptom of an underlying problem. Depression, stress or a person struggling to cope with their life.
It's not an exact science though. Plenty of well adjusted messy people and struggling fastidious folk.

I used to live with some right messy bastards when I was in my early twenties. There'd be Maryland chicken wing bones and fag ends strewn on the floor after beer/PES sessions. Gross.
