You’re in the play offs, don’t be so melodramatic.
Not for long!

Will bet you a fiver to that charity thingy that we finish 9th or lower

Nah you’re alright, you’re falling like a stone. ;-) My point was more that you’re still in the box seat with regards to the play offs so talk of mid table obscurity is way wide of the mark! You’re likely to be in the hunt of a play off spot up to the last day.

But we shouldn't be in the hunt, it should be signed sealed and delivered - I appreciate no side had the right to expect that, but given the trajectory we were on under evans this just wouldn't have happened.

Think Crawley or Cheltenham have a chance of clinching this at the weekend.

Crawley are safe but can still reach the play offs at the moment. But a defeat at Port Vale coupled with a Coventry win at Notts County sees them unable to make the play offs.

Cheltenham can’t reach the play offs but could still mathematically go down (I think - I know all the sides down there have to play each other so I guess they might be safe already?). If they aren’t safe now, a win over Morecambe next weekend, and Grimsby losing to Chesterfield would do it for them.

If Grimsby win all their remaining 5 matches, they can equal Cheltenham's 48 points but would need to overturn a 29 goal difference difference. I guess that means they're not mathematically there yet.

Cheltenham failing to lose or Grimsby failing to win would hand Cheltenham the title. However, I think they may have to share it with Creepy.

Is there a mechanism for separating them? - Timing of final whistles would make Cheltenham favourites as they only need one of the relevant 2 matches to finish and Crawley need two results.

If Grimsby win their 5 remaining matches, the land on 53 points (5 ahead of Cheltenham’s current total). Think you’ve miscounted?!? Or are you working on the pre-80s football of two points for a win? ;-)

But I was wondering if it’s possible Cheltenham, Grimsby and Forest Green couldn’t all get passed Cheltenham’s current point score.

I guess the winner is the game that ends first in the event of a tie?

Don't know what I did there - old league table? Shows how much interest I've had in "our" relegation fight - more concerned what Barrow AFC have to do to finish above Solihull Motors or Woeful Woking.

Yes, it has to be the game that ends first I guess, in the event of a tie.

Surely this prize is Cheltenham's to lose.
Cant get into play offs and now two points from safety, or are they already safe with teams at the bottom having to play each other.

Think so, Chesterfield could take points from Barnet and FGR. Gary Johnson must take full praise for putting together a squad to achieve this accolade, Its been tough often painful but very rewarding.

Barnet can't catch us, and if Grimsby drop any points then neither can they.

FGR could lose to Chesterfield and still catch us but they would need to beat Grimsby on the last day in order to do so, meaning that Grimsby would drop points and therefore not be able to catch us..

Effectively, with my primitive maths (and not checking in any way), I think that means we can't go down and can't go up so we win the first silverware of the season.

EDIT: Actually, Chesterfield could lose to FGR and still get to 52 points, meaning FGR could also lose to Grimsby and still catch us, and Grimsby could still win all their games, so it looks like a point against FGR on Saturday (the most likely result given our record against them( will confirm it.

Your maths makes sense to me. You’re close but not there yet - champagne on ice.

Edit: Stevenage are at home to Mansfield on Tuesday and thus draw level on games played. This could be closer than we thought!

I guess we have been demoted to this competition. :(

Ah the joys of being no hopers!

Who else is down here? Cambridge?

Yep you’re firmly midtable with us lot who have also had mediocre seasons. But Stevenage and Cheltenham are favourites for the cup:

Neither can reach the play offs so it comes down to avoiding the drop. Chesterfield’s game v Mansfield kicks off at 1pm and if the Spireites lose then Stevenage and Cheltenham will share the trophy.

If it’s a draw then Stevenage will be safe but Cheltenham could still mathematically be caught so it would be Stevenage’s title outright. If Chesterfield win then it’ll come down to the 3pm kick offs.

Whoever wins out of Stevenage (at home to Cambridge) and Cheltenham (hosting Forest Green) would then take the crown. If both win then it’ll come down to whoever’s score comes in first.

The only outsiders are Cambridge. If Stevenage beat us and Coventry beat Crawley (and that score comes in ahead of ours) then theoretically we will share the trophy with Stevenage as long as Cheltenham either fail to win or their result comes in after Coventry’s and the Stevenage/Cambridge score.

All very complicated but basically it’s Stevenage who are favourites, then Cheltenham, then Cambridge outsiders. It’s going to be a nail biting day for all involved.

We've no chance of winning this sadly, our dalliance with the playoffs has left it open for other sides who have a headstart on us.

Well then that's us for next season then.

I fear for us next season, we'll probably lose any players we might have wanted to keep due to not making a decision on contracts and then not start signing players for the new season until August the 1st.

Meh, who cares what happens to us.

I don't because our club has always been a joke, at least for the last 20 years bar one or two seasons.

We're shit and we know we are! We're shit and we know we are!

Im going to become a glory fan of some top European club so I will never experience defeat ever again.

So Stevenage and Cheltenham share the honour of being most mediocre first. Chesterfield’s defeat in the early kick off meant they achieved it around 2.50pm.

I’m not familiar with the rules - is there a tie breaker? I feel it’s more “in the spirit” of mediocrity to have to share the title personally.

I can see where you’re coming from with that, but I’m tempted to give it to Stevenage who slumped over the line with the worse goal difference, and also more draws (surely the very essence of averageness?).

That said, I think it would also be in the spirit of the competition to get stuck arguing over the rules to the extent that in fact no definitive winner ever gets awarded and the whole shebang fades into a cloud of irrelevance.

Anyway, appropriately lukewarm congratulations to whoever won it.

I'd love us to make a late run, surely Luton will be on the beach, add that to the stitch-up draw with Yeovil Tuesday and just leaves Grimbsy home for the glory of obscurity.

It’s ok, johnny-come-lately glory hunters are nigh on inevitable with this much GLAMOUR and PRESTIGE to be had.

I think with sharing the award with Stevenage this season, we need to really go all out next year and make the mid-table trophy our own.
