On R5 yesterday there was an item about the black crumb link to cancer. They featured an American female ex-footballer who talked about a number of cases in the US, where this type of pitch is commonly used, and she highlighted that the issue was prevalent in former goalkeepers. I can't remember the specifics but this does sound a little more than pure chance.

Right I've done a bit more research on it, and I don't believe that there is any real evidence that it is linked (n.b. far different from saying there is no link).

Most of the news stories are emotive and follow a few singular cases (i.e. the BBC article above, which was also in a number of other news outlets) or this Amy Griffin who is being extremely vocal on the matter (probably the woman you are referring to). While more research is probably required for definitive answers, it seems like she is cherry-picking data. Further there is no statistical analysis as to what the occurrence rates of the cancers she is looking at are in a general population and/or a population of athletes, and if there is any change in the rates for athletes who play on these pitches, or for just goalkeepers playing on these surfaces.

The few scientific papers which suggest that these chemicals can come out of the black crumb all agree that high temperatures (~60 degrees centigrade and higher) are required to release any harmful vapours, and almost as high (~50 degrees C and up) for chemicals known to be harmful to leech out in to water. There doesn't appear to be anything either way on ingestion or entry to a wound, however in the latter case at least you would probably expect it to be unlikely to have much effect since it requires higher than body temperatures to leech in to water.

Here is a more fact-based article (as opposed to emotive) on the subject: http://www.5-a-side.com/news/does-artificial-turf-give-you-cancer/
Also the Sky Sports News article is more fact based: http://www.skysports.com/football/n...ort-claims-link-between-3g-pitches-and-cancer
While made in a fairly emotive manner, here is the ESPN article containing their documentary from last year: http://espn.go.com/espnw/news-commentary/article/14206717/how-safe-fields-where-play

n.b. while several of the news articles state that Griffin is an author on a study which found 200 athletes who regularly play on the surface to have cancer (158 of them footballers, and 98 of those goalkeepers), there is not a published scientific article in any peer-reviewed article that I can find, and the "full report" is apparently unavailable to the public because it contains patient information (which is just shoddy scientific writing if true). It would be important to see such an article or report in order to understand how athletes were "selected" (for lack of a better term) and what sort of control groups, if any, they were compared to etc. Apparently the data is currently with a Washington state cancer registry to determine if there is a statistical difference or not.

Edit: Nearly forgot to include the best article I read on the matter: https://www.sciencenews.org/blog/growth-curve/science-may-get-sidelined-artificial-turf-debate (see how it actually references papers etc)

Not linked to plastic pitches and cancer but to the big issue with plastic which is playability:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35551542

I'm a massive opponent of plastic pitches and, whether or not there's any legs in the cancer story, the experience of professional players who have to use it really ought to be getting a fair airing before every club rushes into a plastic is best scenario.

Excellent. Is he the cock-end that used to be at Macclesfield? If so, I wouldn't be surprised if he knocked those shirts up himself.

This is almost as good as the Whitby Town T-shirt I was pondering buying at their club shop many moons ago. It read SEA-SEA-SEASIDERS ON TOUR in wavy WordArt and had a host of ClipArt pictures below. Coulda been mine for a fiver. It was XL while I'm an XS, but such things are trifles.

hah... adi yussufs hot steaming piss was probably the nicest beverage that the argyle fans had ever seen at home park. the only reason they have complained is that it was splashed all over the pitch and not sold by the cupful.

I still take great amusement that whoever started this whole thread felt the need to add "(tinpot thread)" to the end of the title!

And why it's not "I've ever heard".

"Chris Kinnear’s Dover side are unlikely to make such drastic chances of personnel; for they have been the league’s surprise package during their first season back in the National League since 2002"

You'd think Macclesfield would remember that we played them twice last season considering they stole 6 points from us.

"Since then, the Devon side have beaten league rivals Guiseley 3-0 in the cup, cementing their place as real contenders to gain back to back promotions."

The less said about that the better really.

In our defense, this website has absolutely nothing to do with the club. I think its run by some Manchester Uni students. I've taken them to task on dozens of mistakes they've made since setting it up. For their sake I really hope they aren't doing a journalism course.

Can't believe how mental people have gone over it. It could have been beautiful though if Holms didn't smash it into the back row of the stand.
