Adkins brought in Forte and Sharp, Pochettino brought in Osvaldo and Koeman has so far brought in Pelle from his former club, Tadic from the Dutch league and former Dutch international, Elia.

Adkins at Reading had transferred vetoed over his head quite often, but then again he hated that and it was part of his problem here, so maybe can't go through with that again. He has at least worked at two clubs with DoF models. As I said above, i'm surprised he's not more closely linked.

If be quite surprised if it was Adkins. Did well at Southampton but clearly had a very good squad, and hasn't been a roaring success anywhere else. Plus we'd be looking for someone who is a bit more positive in playing style I feel.

Clement would still be the favourite for me, both in that I'd like him and he'd fit the project. Don't buy that he's already agreed to go to Derby.

Adkins has a success rate of 2/3 clubs, and the two clubs he had success with was very successful. Even then there were a lot of behind the scenes problems at Reading which we really don't know how it affected him. Under his management we went 300+ days without making a transfer when the squad was desperate for them because we had major ownership problems and nearly went into administration. He failed, but it was a difficult job not to fail.

At this level you'll either be taking a risk on an unproven manager, or going with one without a 100% record of success.

Bit like us with the Pozzos - from the outside they might seem trigger happy but the fans trust them due to what they have done generally on and off the pitch....

Mind you almost any owner(s) would be better than what we had before - even somebody like Mike Ashley!

I don't think we did. Papers just saying we failed with a bid as our owner denied we'd got him and the odds were low. We've been talking with this Marinus guy for a few weeks now.

Yeah I highly doubt we even thought about approaching him, would just be a waste of everyone's time.

After doing some research into Marinus Dijkhuizen it looks like he could be a really interesting appointment. Taking his current club Excelsior up into the Eredivisie and then keeping them there was a phenomenal achievement when you consider that there ground only holds 3500 people. The only downside seems to be that he is very inexperienced and hasn't had much managerial experience, but then again Warbuton had never managed one game until Matthew Benham gave him a chance.

Marinus Dijkhuizen to be appointed Brentford boss - Sky sources

Marinus Dijkhuizen is set to be appointed as Brentford's new head coach, according to Sky sources.
The Excelsior Rotterdam boss will succeed Mark Warburton in the Griffin Park hotseat for next season's Championship campaign.
Dijkhuizen, 43, played as a striker at several Dutch clubs as well as Dunfermline in the Scottish Premier League,


The Dutchman took over at Excelsior in 2014, guiding them to 15th on one of the smallest budgets in the Eredivisie.

Dijkhuizen, when asked about the link with the Bees, said: “I am not saying that I’m leaving, only that there is interest in me. I cannot tell you any more right now but this week I’m going to have a conversation with the club and then we’ll see."

They are very much late to the party. Not confirmed yet, but seemingly pretty much a done deal.

Most definitely a risk - but we've had six months to do our homework, so hopefully we've got it right. I can't imagine it's not been a very well thought out appointment, and I'm very hopeful it will be a success. Warburton was a massively risky appointment when we made it, and it worked out very well. Rosler was also a bit left field. Say what you might, Benham has a very good track record of getting the big decisions right.

This Benham chap owns another club in Denmark, FC Midtjylland, that use the same principles and have just won their first ever league title and qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Fascinating reading - this is the future. Can definitely see football's 'moneyball' moment coming in the next decade or so. Maybe they'll be a Hollywood movie about Brentford in 10 years time!

Yes, FC Midtjylland, Matthew Benham's other club. He bought them out last year and despite some early resistance he his ideas, they've got fully on board now. They won their first ever Danish league title in his first season as owner.

Lots of clubs will have a statistical element to their scouting and training, but it depends on how reliant those clubs are on statistics and making the most out of the data. The Nowhere Men, the scouting book by Michael Calvin talks about it quite a bit, and recalls a conversation several years ago between Benham and Damien Comolli, then Dof at Liverpool:

Benham recalled "Frank [McParland] took me up to Liverpool to meet Comolli. The idea was "we've got a model, you've got a model, maybe we could talk about ways in which we could work together". It was extraordinary. He [Comolli] just said "my model is correct". Anyone with a pure maths or science background wouldn't have said that. Science, in particular, is all about uncertainty and the limits of human knowledge. He was laughably overconfident.

Valuing new players is always a tricky one. A lot of models used by clubs seem to create what I call overparameterisation. They have far too much in them. As I said, if I am looking for a striker I am not interested in his scoring record at all. All that is important to me is the team creates more chances, and offers fewer, when he is on the pitch. If there is a gun to my head, and I really have to include a scoring record in the model, it would be as long term as possible. That means his record over five or ten years,"

The interviewers are terrible, but Marinus seems like a nice guy, and respect to him for going our for a beer with them.
