New sponsors?

We've agreed a deal with the local council which involves no money at all. Medway council will sponsor us from next season, a bit weird really seeing as it's normally a significant revenue stream.

Who do you have lined up?

Wtf? Why would you do that? Why would the council even want to be sponsored/advertised?

For the last 10 years roughly we've had a great idea of holding a raffle where only small Bristol based businesses can enter - they pay £1,000 per ticket and can buy as many as they want. Winner gets home kit, 2nd gets away kit, 3rd gets advertising boards etc. All entries get some sort of match day hospitality as well I think.

Personally I've loved the idea of it however we've dropped it this season - it used to make us roughly 100k a season which used to be the standard but I guess now it's not as financially viable.

It does have it's draw backs though, when we had a bleedin' waste management company on our home shirt

I've no idea, I'm genuinely baffled by it. Some are suggesting it's in return for us using local facilities free of charge, but I can't see the squad turning up at a local paddling pool for a training session.

On a separate note we once had Zanussi as our shirt sponsor. Fair enough you'd think, but the way the shirt was designed meant if you wore a jacket you had the word ANUS written across your chest with the other letters obscured.

It's got to be to do with getting the council on side for any new stadium in the future. Has to be. Also worth noting that we currently lease the training ground off the council, so if we're getting that for free now then technically that's extra money into the club.

Deal has run out with Kappa so we’ve got Puma coming in for the kits. Also our InterSport deal runs out so we should have a new shirt sponsor. Kappa did well by us, first and third home shirts was great, second one was awful though with the red. All away kits were good. Also if the takeover goes through I assume that will bring in new sponsorship which will probably see the initials DW join JJB on the stadium name scrapheap.

Apparently, our shirts will be sponsored by Singha Beer according to our owner at a Fans Forum. And it will be available in the stadium.

Thai Airways have already started some sponsorship with advertising hoardings (I wouldn't be surprised if this sponsorship grew). Rumours of Carabao being involved in terms of sponsorship persist but haven't a clue if true.

You couldn't tell we are owned by a Thai at all.

Fair play - in which case yes, weird.

There's more to this deal than meets the eye, obviously, but I don't think it's a total disaster by any means. Scally has done well to keep us afloat this long when other similar sized clubs have faced financial ruin (how many times have Southend had winding up petitions against them for example?) so I think we may just have to trust him on this. Hard to do sometimes I know!

Nike kits and University of Portsmouth as our main sponsor next season. Sounds good to me, bar the uni's poor reputation with regards to their attitude towards "the locals"..

Got nothing on Wirral Rubbish though.

We're supposedly looking to build on a piece of land opposite the current training ground (which neither the club nor the council currently own). Quite where the money would come from to build it I've no idea.

BMW are paying for our new training ground as part of a deal with Oxford City Council who own the site, so they can develop the existing training ground.

Oxfordshire County Council also sponsored our match Vs Oldham paying £1,695 but it was money well spent as it was promoting NHS healthchecks where 248 people got checked out. Money well spent as I bet they will save far more than that for the NHS in the future and potential for Council support services.

The Council didn't use the hospitality or match tickets included in the deal which I think they missed a trick by not donating them to a Community group.

Maybe it's because the club can't get a sponsor.
Southend have suffered from this for a number of years now. Firstly we had MD as 'sponsors' that's the owner/chairman company, so there is zero income from it. It has though led to this season having a charity on the kit which I like. If we're not going to get any revenue from kit sponsorship then a charity or no sponsor at all is good.
I can only assume at Southend that the club have a minimum sponsorship deal they are willing to accept and if nobody comes forward then so be it. However for a club that is losing over £1M a year it's all a bit odd, you'd think they would be happy to take anything.

I take your point, I'd much prefer a local charity though if that's the case, some excellent local causes too.

More on our deal, it seems we're getting the full time use of three pitches for all levels of teams (ladies, kids, disabled etc). Nice if we can help improve them and put something back in to the community.

(Although I still find the sponsorship deal extremely odd)
