After seeing that he was heading to Wrexham for talks, our ex manager Gary Mills is apparently heading to the Wirral for talks regarding the Tranmere job. He is currently 9/4 favourite for the job on betvictor and, if you were to go down to the Conference, he would be one of the better managers at that level you could go for.

This, obviously, is not set, merely speculation which may be of interest to the Tranmere fans on here. Who would you like/think you will get? And will they be in place for Saturday?

Would be a good appointment if (when) we go down to the Conference. Seems to have a decent record and if Wrexham want him too, it would appear that's a good sign as they are one of the bigger sides down there. I'd personally be in favour of this type of appointment as opposed to some famous ex-pro in their first job. It's whether he fancies the pressure here, as there will be a lot of pressure to get up 1st go.

He seemed the sort of bloke to enjoy being under pressure when he was here, had a certain degree of arrogance/confidence in his ability and his tactics- he very, very rarely diverted from a passing 433 during his time in the conference and L2 with us which, after some of his comments in our local paper, was the beginning of his downfall. However, he does get a team playing good football and gets results. I think he would be a good appointment to get you back into the league, but he won't keep you in it once you have returned.

I don't think he'd be appointed with the long term in mind. What's he like with the youth, as that's a massive focus of our owners now.

With some of the names which have been banded about recently (Duncan Ferguson), I'd be pretty happy with Mills. I'd much rather someone who knows the conference well and has experience of taking teams up than an ex premier league player looking to get his foot into the management door.

he's not any great shakes with youth, at York anyway. When we were in the conference, we didn't have anything ready to come in from the youth squad because it was basically non-existent. In L2, he had very little again barring a defender by the name of Tom Allan. He didn't play much under Mills, in fact he may have played more under NW. Incidentally, Mills took Allan to Gateshead at the start of this season after he left us on a free and I don't think he's played in more than twenty matches this season. However, our youth system was poor in the conference and is still quite poor now IMO and we haven't had anything come through that any manager has had much of a chance to use but, if you are in the position where you have a few kids who are ready for a go at first team, he may well give them the chance.

Also, he had a habit of bringing in totally unknown players in- an English player from Iceland being one of the more staggering- and having a fair few of these in the squad. However, if you have a decent scouting department, that's another problem that may be avoided.

Don't think for a second that I'm on an anti-Mills rant or anything, the man rescued us from the conference by playing good football and had a habit of winning the big games.

If I was Mills I'd go Wrexham. Nothing to do with club sizes but the amount of pressure to stabilise Tranmere and make them competitive again would be an enormous job if they go down a level and he'd need more than a season to put things right on the Wirral.

At Wrexham all they want is to be in the mix to get into the Top 5 again. Clubs got a decent budget, just needs a few signings from a man who knows the Conference well to make them competitive again.

They can offer more than us, that's the bottom line. Ok, he turned down FGR before, but he won't exactly be on peanuts at Gateshead.

Sounds like Tranmere have given up on survival already if they're planning on getting Mills in.
