Next season’s pecking order..

Yes the season only finished last week. Yes the playoffs are still yet to be concluded. Yes no one’s even signed a player yet. I’m impatient.

Who are your picks for challenging, or to go down, or for mid-table mediocrity?

Hopefully this thread should develop as we get into the summer..

Agreed. They will have a pick of the players. The only possible hiccup will be if they appoint a manager who hasn't a clue about L1 or Sol Campbell.

I'd be looking at us trying to get into the top 6. But even if we don't and stay around the top 10, that is still a good season.

All the sounds from our end have been implying a challenge for promotion, so a case of 2nd season syndrome would be a pretty disastrous season for us!

Sunderland title winners, Wycombe relegation and us mid table. Past that I'm not sure, think Accy may surprise a few though.

Mid table for us I think, one of those seasons where you dont really have a chance of the playoffs but you kid yourselves into thinking you do for just a bit too long.

If Accrington keep their team together I think they could do well, or at least better than a lot might expect of them. They just seem to have something about them, that I cant really put my finger on, but they are a well oiled machine.

Sunderland will surely go straight back up with ease.

Sunderland will walk it by a country mile, I fear for Wycombe though with the average age of their squad. Accy should just have enough about them to survive, if anything being hard to beat has got them to this league.

I'd be surprised if we were in a relegation or promotion battle with the current side. We lost our way against a lot of organised teams last season and couldn't break them down and I'd expect a lot more opposition organisation this season......so mid to upper mid would be my guess - unless we buy /sell awfully or well.

I have a feeling Sunderland may be in for a culture shock and may not be so automatic as some think

I reckon Sunderland will walk this league. Especially if they have new owners. I can’t see how anyone wouldn’t put them as massive favourites unless they’re trying to be different.

Rotherham, Scunny will be strong whoever doesn’t go up, Barnsley too, Charlton and Pompey also up there. Then teams like us, Plymouth, Oxford who might be interested if they get their acts together, looking unlikely in our case though. Shrewsbury if they don’t go up I expect it will depend how badly their squad and management team gets gutted. Can’t say I’m looking at any of the teams coming up and thinking they will challenge really.

There will always be teams like Bury and Northampton that appear to have splashed the cash and other teams like MK who appear to be too big to be relegated from this league, plus teams like us and Shrewsbury that are favourites to be relegated due to our shopping in the Poundland market.

It never works out that way which makes speculation at this stage a complete lottery.

and walsall shrewsbury rochdale wimbledon accrington to be fighting it out at the bottom

The only way to counter it is to walk through Portsmouth center ringing a bell warning people, "relegation is coming, relegation is coming"

We'll struggle next season in L1 if we don't go up (and will struggle hugely in the Champ if we do go up!) . We'll definitely lose the manager in the summer plus the majority of our best players, and because of the play-off final will be starting from scratch, and several weeks behind all the other clubs.

If we don't go up I could see us being in for a long old season next year. Our chairman cut the budget for this year and is going to cut it again for next year. We already got rid of our two highest earners in January and I assume would look to ship some more out come the end of the season. Two of our best players (Hakeeb Adelakun and Duane Holmes) have contracts running out and not a chance they will sign if we don't go up.

We have relied on two fantastic loans (Toney and Yates) to get us to the play-offs this time and will have to do the same next year I would assume.

I am already braced for something to go catastrophically wrong however and after a poor start to be wishing for the welcome release of mid-table mediocrity, after salvaging an away point at Wycombe Wanderers.

One would expect you to walk it. However, can you adapt to the style of league one, and probably more germane you will be everyone’s cup final and they will want to beat you.
