Firstly, great to see so many Luton fans contributing to this board but I find the expectations confusing.

They have just been promoted to League One behind Accy but so many of their fans seem to be confident of the play offs as a minimum. Nathan Jones is undoubtedly a talented manager but is someone pumping in a load of dosh for the upgrades a team normally needs after promotion? More than Portsmouth who attracted Jackett but still had to settle for mid table?

We actually won League Two a few years back, albeit with a Mad Dog team of old pros, but struggled at the start of the following season before changing most of the team and reaching safety late.

Conversely, Seaside Kurt and the Blackpool fans seemed to be convinced they are doomed despite also have an excellent manager and having recently torn Bradford City a new one and gubbed us on our own turf. I know the Oyston thing is blowing up again but that has been going on for years.

Have I missed something?

Can I just say that when you wrote this literally one Luton fan who had contributed had said that they were expecting top 6. The other 2 said Midtable and the other said top half of mid table perhaps sneaking top 6 by the back door basically.

So i dont think its a fair characterization to say that Luton fans are expecting top 6 at all. The "expectation" over most Luton fans is definitely mid table/top half mid table.

Just to be clear, we certainly didn't "pump in a load of dosh" last season. As has been stated previously our financial priorities are with propping up our ageing ground at the moment. We signed Brett Pitman, but other than that it was generally non-league acquisitions, loanees and players promoted from the youth team. We're in a pretty healthy financial position but I'd be surprised if we were in a position to increase the playing budget much this season, unless we sell Matt Clarke to raise funds.

As I understand it, Luton are pretty stable financially, have an ambitious board and may well be looking to invest the money to get into the top 6.

Ours this season was over that and about the 8th biggest not that it did us any favours.

I think Luton will have a solid season in 18/19 - similar to Portsmouth's efforts of last season. Will be interesting to see which players make the best step-up to L1 for them.

No? As basically 3 of the 4 people who have commented have said - mid table is probably the expectation. The hope is a little flirtation with the playoffs - maybe and not likely to get in them. Lets not fall into the habit of generalizing Kenny as "Luton fans" now.

Id be happy with just a solid first season in the division to get ourselves settled back at the level before looking to kick on for a proper play off assault the following season.

As a general aside and perhaps a little controversial amongst my fellow Luton supporters, and certainly getting ahead of myself a tad- i think maybe getting promoted to the Championship before being in the new stadium might do us more harm than good in the long run.

As someone who had the misfortune to live in Luton for a couple of years, albeit a while ago, I can assure you that the literacy standard in Bradford and Gillingham is something that most in that part of the world can only dream of.
I fear Luton may become Rotherham's direct replacement.

I mentioned Sheehan the other week being naff but looking good at Luton. Seeing Marc McNulty bossing it tonight and being lauded as one of the best strikers in L2 makes me wonder what the standard's like down there.

Any team that comes up will have to strengthen to challenge for the play-offs.

On the flip side, I cant believe Shaun Whalley has been a seemingly integral part of a side that has finished 3rd in this league and very possibly will get promoted. A bog standard conference winger if I ever saw one (and ive seen a few!) if you were to judge off his time here.

It really is "horses for courses" for me and fitting players to how you want to play. Obviously any side coming up will need to strengthen, thats a given, but comparisons like that are futile.

Boyce, I back us to go back up. We showed some real promise to the end of the season - enough for me to think we can go back up.

Ironic that we have spent more seasons in the championship than league 1. Be nice to be down for just one year, even though I know we are too small for the championship.
I do not think Sunderland will walk this league. Need major surgery and could be a season of rebuilding before they hit the ground running again

Jack Marriott ripped League One to shreds, yet less than a year ago he was 4th choice for us in League Two. It therefore seems obvious to me that we will be pissing this tinpot division henceforth.

Oh, dear. I can say hand on heart that I was not having a dig at Luton, I was genuinely pleased at the new activity their fans have brought to the League One board. It is just unusual to hear optimism as most of us spend our time arguing that our team is shitter than yours.

Actually there is a district within Gillingham called Luton (check your maps if you think that is a wind up) and it is a place you drive quickly through, if you get my meaning. Not saying that the rest of Gillingham is much better either.

Regarding the Portsmouth fan, I was just impressed when Jackett agreed to be your manager. He has had a lot of success at this level so I expected a promotion charge but he probably agreed to take on this job due to the long term prospects rather than short term.

Other people will quote that figure on here and elsewhere, and use it to attack us, but really it's just your guesswork.

I haven't made any assumptions, incorrect or otherwise.
A Gills fan merely posted a genuine enquiry re Luton fans' expectations this season and this was then followed by a totally unnecessary and childish response calling Gills and Bradford fans illiterate.
