Once the initial buzz dies down over the next month or so, the lack of titles will surely be a killer in terms of getting people who aren't Nintendo/Zelda fanboys to make the purchase. Especially given the price of both the hardware and the games.

https://rankedboost.com/nintendo-switch/game-release-dates/

Most games on that list don't even have a confirmed release date.

Interestingly, I saw a comparison between the Switch and NVidia's Shield Tablet, which was released in 2015. It's no secret that the Switch is basically an Nvidia device. I'm surprised how well it faired in comparison all things considered.

Not any more, its sold out and not back in stock until next Friday.

Just seen the prices of the games. Ridiculous. People will be best waiting for the bundles to start appearing.

Still in stock where I live

Strange, the grey model isn't available until March the 10th according to Amazon.co.uk. You can buy it from 3rd party providers on there, but for more money. The Neon Red/Neon Blue model is available from Amazon, although for nearly £60 more for no reason I can discern other than the controllers being coloured.

The RRP of the coloured one is the same as the Grey one, you're just looking at 3rd party suppliers who are marking up the price now it's out of stock. Something that's pretty obvious, you do like coming up with bullshit negative reasons don't you?

Anyway, yeah it appears to be out of stock on the main website, but Prime Now where I live has stock.

Eh? it's quite clear you view everyone who doesn't have their tongue up Mario's arse as being negative about both Nintendo and the Switch. If all you want is positive posts I suggest you kindly sod off to some Nintendo fanboy forum, I'm sure there are plenty out there.

And you're wrong, it's now out of stock like the grey one so only available from 3rd party sellers (hence your incorrect assumption) but Amazon were selling them directly from themselves at almost £60 more than the grey one.

Yeah, I'm a Nintendo fan, and probably biased on my views, but I call people out when they're clearly just being dismissive of something because it's Nintendo, not based on fact or anything.

Amazon don't / can't change their prices on the console off RRP for a certain period, so I know your claim that it has now magically changed away from what you were claiming are wrong.

It's worth pointing out I've owned more than one Nintendo console in the past (I still have an N64 in the loft somewhere). I've nothing against them as a brand and they make fantastic games. The idea I'm dismissing the Switch purely because it's made by them is ridiculous. I'm pointing out the issues it has, including price and game availability and its limitations in comparison to the alternatives. It's a thread about the Switch, there is nothing wrong in doing so.

The last time I checked Amazon had 2 of the Red/Blue Switch consoles in stock, and were charging over £330. It could have been a temporary pricing error on their part, but that is the fact of the matter. Feel free to dismiss it if you so wish, but there was nothing magic about it.

EDIT -- you can see this from my earlier screenshot, that price on the right is from Amazon, otherwise it would say "from" above it like it does now as seen below.

You can see it says "from £324", that's what Amazon does when it's only available from 3rd parties. If Amazon were selling it, they would only be showing one price.

I also know that they can't change their prices from RRP, as that is the standard agreement they have with suppliers for the first period on sale.

Exactly, as I said in the edit. Look at the screenshot I posted in post #63 at 10.30 this morning and compare it to my second screenshot in post #67. The first one was from when Amazon still had the red/blue switch in stock, it does not have the word "from" above the price so is being sold directly by Amazon and it's listed as £336. The second screenshot has the word "from", showing Amazon have no stock and it's only available from 3rd party sellers. You were wrong, accept it and let's move on.

Really though, can we talk about those Zelda reviews? Because DAAAAYMN.

Currently on 98 on metacritic after 64 reviews, 40 of those being perfect scores with scores of 9 at the very lowest. You get games with brilliant reviews come along once in a while, but this is still quite spectacular... by comparison, The Last of Us, generally seen as pretty much the best game of the last generation, managed to get 42 perfect scores out of its 98 total reviews. Amazing, but Zelda has a pretty significantly higher ratio.

I get that hyperbole will always follow this sort of release, but based purely on those sorts of scores, it sounds like a game that'll at least be mentioned when people talk about the best game of all time. Time and individual tastes and what not will obviously be a factor and there's certainly no definitive answer to that question, but it certainly looks promising.

And yeah, scores are just scores at the end of the day and can't be taken as absolute gospel, but it's the content of the reviews, talking about the game itself, that's mostly got me excited for it. It just sounds like a terrific experience.

FWIW, I bought the Wii U version... fuck paying 300 quid for very unnoticeable improvements in graphics

The prices in those boxes show you the price the console is available at from a place where it is in stock, you only have to look at your original screen shot to see the price listed in those boxes for the Grey switch doesn't match the Amazon price above it in the photo. Your own screenshot proves you to be wrong! Amazon don't dynamically change prices, especially on launch products, I know that because I have seen Amazon sales agreements before.

Anyway, last post responding to this.

Can't believe there's been such a consensus about how good a game it is! I've loved my first 5 or so hours, we'll see how it continues but it's been brilliant so far.

My only problem so far is getting on with the main quest as I keep drifting off to explore / look at random things!

Christ, this is getting tedious. You have been proven wrong yet continue. I've already stated it was likely a pricing error, but Amazon WERE directly selling the red/blue Switch for £336.

Now we know how we feel having to read your nonsense.

Yeah, sorry about that. I should have known this thread was exclusively for those that have nothing but good things to say about the Switch. I'll leave you to it.

But but...you can't take it anywhere with you.

I can take it to play while on the shitter... what more do I need?

Anyway, had a good couple hours or so on it now and I'm really fucking impressed. Seeing good reviews and hearing all these things said about how great a game is it is one thing, but it's the small little nuances that the game has that have really endeared me to it so far. For example, I actually died pretty early on... got one hit killed by a douchebag. So I tried him again simply planning to kill him before getting hit... got in a few good whacks and he dropped his really strong weapon... so I quickly ran over and grabbed it for myself, before beating him to death with it. That whole dynamic, and his reaction to me stealing his weapon, seems like a small thing, but it's one of my favourite moments so far.

And I love how it absolutely refuses to hold my hand, as well. I've just had to get to a shrine in a mountain that was really cold, causing damage if I stayed in it for too long. Having to figure out how to traverse the mountain, and then executing my plan, felt so natural and satisfying. And that seems to be a case with a lot of things in the game.

And one of the biggest compliments so far is that I genuinely can't find a fault with it thus far. A stutter in the framerate at times (though I hear this is actually worse on the Switch, as it's a Wii U game ported to the Switch... ha!) but that's genuinely it. Granted though, two hours in is a bit early to be finding things to complain about... so lets give that one time.

So yeah, really impressed in these first few hours.

Played a bit more of it now and... it's still absolutely outstanding. I still can't get over the sense of general adventure the game creates compared to others. "Go there" is about all the instruction you have... how you do it is up to you. It's constantly making me think of other games... it feels like the coming together of everything great in gaming over the last decade or so to make one super game that masters everything it can master.

It reminds me of the following games:

Metal Gear Solid V's - In terms of the open world and structure of the game. MGS V very much had a system where it'd tell you where to go, but let you decide how you get there.

Elder Scrolls/Fallout - In terms of their open worlds and just how dense they are with points of interest.

Shadow of the Colossus - Once again in it's open world (the look of BotW is certainly most reminiscent of SotC) and the general climbability of everything. Only SotC felt a lot more direct.

So in terms of the open world... it's one as dense as Bethesda games, open to creative freedoms as MGS V and grand and beautiful as SotC's. But there's also...

The Last of Us - in terms of the resource management. You feel like you're in a constant battle against the game world itself and can only carry so much, plus nothing lasts forever. There's a real, scrappy, survival element that reminds me of TLOU.

Minecraft - in terms of its sense of exploration and, once again, survivalist aspects.

Half Life 2 - in terms of it's physics based puzzle solving that does a great job of letting the player figure things out and solve them as they see fit.

It doesn't necessarily do all of these things as well as all of these games, but it's close on most, if not all, of them. And considering the fact that some of the above games are among my favourites ever released, that's very good. But my favourite comparison, is possibly:

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - My favourite Zelda game by some distance, and certainly the one that BotW reminds me of the most. If it's as good as Wind Waker, for me, that's amazing. If it's better, as people seem to suggest it may well be? Christ on a bike! :sur:... and to be fair, I can't see why it can't be.

I've only done 5 shrines by now (stupid Stag do's getting in the way) and I can safely say my Zelda hierarchy now goes:

Breath of the Wild
Ocarina of Time (partly because of the wow factor the first time I ever turned it on)
Wind Waker (which I fucking love)

Keep spending my whole time at the moment spending a couple of hours going a short while down a road and getting side tracked trying to figure out how to access some random landmark in the middle of a field, and not caring one bit.

It's a well known fact that OAF doesn't give out his gamertags, so people can't see how rubbish I am.

I don't even know how to access mine... I actually realized how little I'd played my Wii U yesterday. Saw yesterday that I'd played BotW for 7 and a half hours... then I checked out my previous stats on the console. I hadn't actually played on my Wii U at all in 2016... or 2015 . So yeah, 2 years completely untouched... sure sounds like a Nintendo console to me. Also, I only had two games before (Mario Kart and SSB) and saw that I'd played them for a combined 15 or 16 hours total...

Anyway, back to Zelda and...

RIP my first horse. Well, he's not actually dead... but he's managed to wonder off into some mountains and he can't get out. I've just spent half an hour trying to rescue the poor bugger, but he's proper stuck. And as far as I can see, there's no way to reset him, either. If I'm honest, though... I way prefer moving about on foot instead of on a horse, so it ain't that bad.

Now I'm stuck traversing said mountains on foot and it WON'T STOP RAINING. Makes climbing these things near impossible... this is gonna be a ball ache.

Had you checked him in at the stables yet? If so, you can go there and 'board him'. I had to do that when I left him somewhere.

Called it Epona, like a proper fanboy.

What're your initial thoughts lads? I haven't had a Nintendo console since the Wii, absolutely loved it as well as my DS when I was younger.

Was planning on getting this until I saw the lack of games at the release and the prices, but seeing others talk about it makes me jealous.

Worth me getting it? Ideally I'd get it with a Mario Kart bundle but we shall see.

If you are on the fence then I'd suggest waiting a bit. I wouldn't expect the price to fall too much, but you could save a bit on the bundles perhaps.

There aren't many games now - but there's a good steady flow to come in over the next few months, so it won't be a problem for long. Having the portability / flexibility to play off the TV is awesome. Usually we're watching something on the TV so the console allows me to get in more gaming time than I normally would.

Yep, exactly the same here. Was a bit annoyed that the first horse I got looked nothing like Epona but still did it anyway
