Always look fondly on this fixture after our playoff exploits a long long time ago. Proper football match!

There is potential that the other 3 in the bottom 4 could all pick up wins on Saturday so we have to get the points.

To do that Ardley needs to sort out both sides of defence work more on defending crosses and better play from the midfield.
The 55 point target is looking less likely should we lose this one. We have to shift 7-8 in January (impossible) to bring in the 3-4 needed to push this team up the league.

(hopefully this will be a failedless thread)

We've not been playing well of late, apart from the 2nd half against Cambridge we've been pretty shite actually.

Be interesting to see the team Mellon puts out with Southport 2 days later, which financially is a much bigger game. I'd rest a couple who look like they're struggling with fitness, Jennings and McNulty maybe.

Id go for

Davies

Buxton
Monthe
Sutton
Bakayago

Smith
Harris
Mcullogh
Gilmour (if fit)
Mullin

Norwood

With that team I think it will be a 1-1 draw. Norwood to score, 800 Tranmere fans.

I remember that play off final very well, we didn’t turn up after having beaten Bristol Rovers at Wembley the previous weekend. It looked like Tranmere had been on the ale all week. I’ve never experienced anything worse in football than loosing a play off final. We were left disappointed twice that season because we were momentarily promoted when the football league relegated Sheffield Wednesday 2 divisions for some irregularities only to be overturned by the FA.
I would take a point from this game as we will probably rest key players for the Southport game. I can see another 5-2 drubbing on the cards.

{misty eyed} That period with Notts , Tranmere and both Bristol clubs battling out in the old Division 3 was a great time .

I remember Tranmere winning at Wembley just before , but on the day the game couldn’t of been more comfortable and perfect for Notts fans . I still remember the one clear chance Rovers had when the guy mysteriously and tamely took the chance early ( header ? )

Nowhere near as good as a game as the following season’s final with Brighton but I is Notts fans know all too well how you felt that day . Our final versus Bradford was about as depressing and just as much a formality for the Bantams 5/6 years later

Great times , and my favourite times we were so fortunate to have Warnock back then .

As for this game , we need Tranmere to rest everyone for the cup game . We need a win pure and simple , and I’m all aboard the Ardley bandwagon . He’s literally out last hope

Scored 17 and conceded 21 from our 10 away games so far, suggesting we're more than capable of bagging a few on our travels but simply can't defend for shit.

With that in mind, i can't see anything other than a 0-0.

A draw just isn’t good enough in the current circumstances. Changing the mentality of the squad is without doubt the new managers biggest challenge. He has so much to do and not in a huge amount of time. Need to start turning the corner and soon

Without Tootle we don't have a right back of the required standard. Unless Jones can get a grip of himself we don't have a LB either. None of the centre half pairings have any pace.
The midfield doesn't create anywhere near enough chances and the forwards don't hold the ball up well.
We are in some real trouble now and really need to get our best eleven on the pitch, which still isn't a good team.
Desperate for a win but really not expecting one.

Yes, a fantastic period that will probably never be bettered in our case. Our disappointment did not last long, as we went back to Wembley twice the following season and beat Bolton in the play-off final, followed by a series of promotion challenges in the division above.

We will definitely rest players on Saturday and I would be fairly happy with a point in the circumstances. I think we will set up quite cautiously as we have shipped goals alarmingly away from home in recent weeks. I am not expecting a classic.

I think our away following will take a bit of a hit as well, with a 1,300 sell out at Southport two days later.

As I’ve said on here many times before ‘it’s better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all’

Was indeed a great era RLC, I was 11-13 years old during those back to back promotions to the top flight via the old Wembley, when Football was more important than anything else.

I think we should play our strongest defensive line-up, save possibly McNulty, as we are well off for defenders. I would rest Norwood and Jonny Smith as we are short of creative players and need them both at Southport.

Davies
Buxton Sutton Monthe Ridehalgh
Tollitt Harris Gilmour(?) Jennings
Mullin Stockton

Home win.

Yeah I believe so, Promoted via the playoffs and relegated twice but then moved back up to the (then) Division One.

Not sure what to expect from us in terms of squad, therefore guessing how we will perform will be even harder.

I “think” we will put out very much a reserve side plus Norwood. Whether those players play well with a point to prove is hard to say and with Norwood in there we are going to have that constant goal threat.

When you have the 3rd best attack away from home you really should have more points than we do, but for whatever reason we are extremely error prone on our travels.

If you enjoy a bet though, don’t go near this game.

I'm sure Tranmere's starting line up will be a strong one, pretty close to what Mellon sees as his strongest eleven. Whether the players will be up for it or not (for the most obvious reason there is - not wanting to risk getting themselves injured) is another matter though.

Right now I can't see past a Notts win, unfortunately for us and the others down at the bottom.

Bar the fact excluding the Mickey Mouse cup thingy we haven’t won for 9 or is it 10 league games! We’ve picked up a grand total of 4 points during that time, sit 23rd in the form table, 23rd in the table that matters, bar all that I totally agree I can’t see past a home win :ffs:

Seriously forget who Tranmere might or might not rest, we still have injuries keeping key players out in key positions.

The bookies disagree with your sentiments and have us as 2/1 underdogs. Fill ya boots Vanni

How many are Tranny likely to bring up and does it work the same whenever a good away following is expected at Notts with the plod telling them to drink on the waterfront? I’m out on our works do all day and will avoid if there’s going to be 500 odd folk packing the bars out

I would guess about 500. We would ordinarily bring about 800-1,000, but we have three local away matches in the next three weeks and not many people can afford to attend all four games.

Most people are expecting a weakened side and with Bury, Southport and Macclesfield all likely to get big followings this one will probably be one of our lowest of the season.

Why the weakened sides Tranny fans? Southport seen as more important?

We play Tottenham if we beat Southport.

Worth anywhere between 300k-750k just for playing them. It’s on TV, will be a big gate and they waived their TV and gate receipts for Newport last year.

Then it makes total sense not to risk anyone or anything. Far more important in the grand scheme of things. That’s a great cup draw

The bookies haven't got a clue when it comes down to lower league football. They just look at the table and the home/away form, and come up with the odds. As do most gamblers. Also, most of the money that is staked on English footy is coming from abroad, people who have probably never watched a L2 game in their life so I don't pay any attention whatsoever to what they're betting on.

your first paragraph is a load of bull and you know it. You might as well tell the County players not to bother turning up for the match. Poor runs have got to end sometime and you're playing Tranmere at a really good time with their minds set on the cup match, and I don't really blame them tbh.

By the way, while focusing on your absent players and poor form, you've conveniently missed Tranmere's not so great current away form. Here let me remind you -

1-3 vs FGR
2-3 vs Crewe
2-5 vs Grimsby

New manager bounce + Tranmere more interested in the cup match + Tranmere's recent away record = can't see past a home win.

I really hope I'm wrong though and you do not beat them.

I disagree with 90% of your post. But seeing as we all want to stay on topic in this matchthread . Like I ended my earlier post with a bit of advice. If you believe eveything you say , fill your boots and let us know what you bet before kick off . For someone who can’t see past a Notts win 2/1 are fantastic odds :£:£:£

Poor runs have got to end some time hahahaha, I think that’ll be about the twelfth time us pies have heard that before a game only to fail to win again !

I would list our recent away and home form as a comparison but it’s too depressing . In fact I could just list all the results this season and that would fully justify being underdogs in this fixture

Tough week for us this, Notts County on Saturday, Southport two days later, then Bury the following saturday, all away. Potentially season defining. Not holding a lot of hope for a result in either of the two league games, think we'll lose at County, and not sure how many will travel down as a result. Shame really, three good away games that we'd take a minimum of a thousand to each if spread out a bit. There's also Macc on new year's day, but who cares... ;)

Great memories. I still remember the home league game against Tranny that season, they played absolutely fantastic in the first half, some of the best football I’ve ever seen at that level with Jimmy Harvey pulling the strings. They didn’t score somehow, and we nicked it with a diving Gary Chapman header in the second half. How can I remember a game from nearly 30 years ago better than one from a couple of weeks ago?.!

Ardley’s like Obi Wan Kenobi, he’s definitely our only hope, starting with getting a spawny win tomorrow. Looks like it’ll be bastard freezing.

Looks like this will be played in horrendous conditions. Which Tranny first teamers are out?

I’ll add my pen’ath to the nostalgia, we had a fantastic team then but then so did Tranmere. I remember listening on the radio when we met late on in the season in a huge promotion 6 pointer (night game?). Tranmere ran out 2-0 winners thanks to a Chris Malkin brace in front of almost 10k at Prenton Park but luckily we had the last laugh!
