I have to respond coz you've triggered a few memories.

Mamaliga cu Branza was a personal favourite until a a lactose intolerance kicked in. I still shiver at the memory of the "spaghetti" served with tomato ketchup that I was regulary served up with on my travels in the early 90's

However, the language I got the hang of was Romaneste or Romanian, which was nearer to the Latin I failed to learn at school than the Italian I picked up on holidays - very different to Romany.

Incidentally, I've never met folk more prejudiced and disgusting in their atitude to the Romanies than the "middle-class" Romanians I knew - one of their few but significant failings.
