Unnaturally optimistic but screw it. We are five points clear and are a solid side, tough to break down, so no reason why we can't stay unbeaten. Looking forward to the Pompey game. Sure we'll lose at least one of those though.

after Colchester we have a run of very winnable looking games (which continues into November with Newport and then Exeter), the pressure will be on us more than ever now to stop merely drawing games and start winning them, if we do we could propel ourselves right into contention.

Although we're bound to lose at some point it's hard to really say what a defeat is going to look like, we've drawn a few games we might otherwise have lost by just battling to the end and nobody really looks like turning us over. I imagine our luck will just run out eventually and we'll go down 1-0 or 2-1 in a fairly even encounter, could be to one of these teams... or not. Who can say? I think we need to pin our hopes in winning three of them and then say we either draw the other two or draw one - lose one. Gives us 10-11 points for the month which I would bite your hand off for if you offered it now.

I've randomly gone for Morecambe getting one over on us in their cup final with Colchester proving tricky opponents at Brunton Park. I hope that doesn't happen though just because it means we go into the Hartlepool game a bit deflated (though I was going to go into a game against any team on poor form it would be Hartlepool just because it'll be a game that we pick ourselves back up again for easily)

Some tough away games this month so home form will be key.

For us:

Sat 1st - Accrington (h)
Sat 8th - Blackpool (a)
Sat 15th - Grimsby (h)
Sat 22nd - Exeter (a)
Sat 29th - Portsmouth (h)

Very hard to predict this season. I would have said a maximum of three points before Saturday but the last two games have given a little more faith. Maybe 7 points, wins over Accrington and Grimsby, draw against Blackpool with losses in the other two.

4 of the 5 teams we play in October are currently in the bottom 5 so a decent chance for us to put a few points on the board if we're going to be serious challengers at the top this season.

In all honesty and its still early doors but October could well be a defining month for Notts.
Two matches against promotion favourites, an away derby as well as a reasonably local home tie against Crewe.

No real confidence in those predictions but, almost as important (now our season has started), 2 new grounds for me to tick off. Circumstances have always combined to keep me from St James Park. I vaguely remember visiting a closed season Bloomfield Road when we stayed in the holiday camp at the end of Blackpool Airport's runway, but don't think I've been to Blackpool since my stag do in the 70's.

Morecambe H - Lose - We ain't gonna win four in a row, are we?

Mansfield A - Win - I think we've got the cojones for this, most of the c*** who folded last year are gone and we look happy to get into a battle with anyone. We don't lose 5-0 every time we go behind this year, either. It'll be a scrappy game but we have Stead and Forte and they, well, don't.

Crewe Alexandra H - Win - No real logic to this, I know basically nothing about them. But they did lose 5-1 to Wycombe last night and i'm pretty sure that's bad.

Portsmouth A - Lose - They'll probably just prove to be a bit good for us.

Luton Town H - Win - Should be a fun game, this. Both sides look pretty similar on paper, have the same number of points and are probably in for similar seasons. Sheehan's gonna stick another own goal in to tip the balance.

Not too sure why Plymouth & Cambridge fans don't fancy getting much off us on their patches. Our away form has been very poor - only win was at Exeter which is looking like par for the course.

Doncaster (H) - Win
Leyton Orient (A) - Draw
Plymouth (A) - Lose
Notts County (H) - Win
Cambridge (A) - Draw

I'd be happy with 8 points from a tough looking month.

Probably has something to do with the fact we've played you twice at home in the league since we've come back up and conceded nine goals.....

Quite a tricky month for us with three tough away trips, including the two longest trips of the season. Should give us a better idea of how we'll fare this year and I hope we show a bit more confidence and intent at Plymouth and Doncaster than we did at Portsmouth. We need to maintain some generally decent home form too.

Carlisle (A) - Draw
Newport (H) - Win
Doncaster (A) - Lose
Morecambe (H) - Win
Plymouth (A) - Lose

Having gotten a better result than expected yesterday I'm fairly optimistic that the planets have aligned in such a way for us to go on a run of good form. Out next six games are Morecambe, Hartlepool, Stevenage, Crawley, Newport and Exeter. That's three of the current bottom five, of the other three, Morecambe and Crawley have had good starts but few expect them to last the pace and Hartlepool are, well, Hartlepool.

We should be looking at those fixtures and thinking that they're all winnable so to win four of them sounds like a reasonable expectation.

Well after getting six points from the two games I thought we'd get one point from, there's now absolutely no reason why we can't get nine point from our next three games against Hartlepool, Stevenage and Crawley, or even fifteen from our next five (carrying on into games against Newport and Exeter). It's unlikely we'll go on such a run, but just saying there's no reason it can't happen.

It'll be a travesty if he doesn't win it regardless of the next result. All time club record broken, 4 wins on the trot for the first time in 8 years. Great stuff.

If Plymouth win and we get beat then they'll have taken 13 points from the month and we'll have taken 12 and Derek Adams will be named manager of the month, that's pretty much the only criteria they use.

If Adams wins more points than Curle this month, why should Curle be named Manager of the Month ahead of him?

I said Curle will win manager of the month if we beat Crawley, Dave said he'd probably win it anyway, I replied that manager of the month is pretty much just manager who has picked up the most points and they don't take account of things like managers breaking records. I didn't express a view on that.

I don't think breaking a club record should factor, it should be awarded for a manager's merits on his own, not his merits compared to his predecessors. I think there are examples though where they could take into account how the points were won and who against, or the resources he had to work with, rather than just simply how many, they way they do things now they may as well just have it assigned automatically.

It doesn't necessarily have to be the manager who has won the most points, I agree, but if the two big candidates are top of the table contenders then I'm not sure it can come down to much else. Carlisle aren't the biggest side in the league granted, but you're certainly not one of the minnows either. I'd be surprised if our budgets vary massively, although granted, I'd expect ours to be higher given attendances. Even so, seeing Carlisle second isn't shocking, especially at this early stage of the season.

Don't get me wrong, I think Curle has done a great job, but if (and it's a big if) we extend our lead at the top of the table this month then I expect Adams to take it.
