When it comes to football, October is the month that I look out for the most. While August is great as that means the footy's back, I find that it's only during the month of October that one can get a good idea of what lies ahead. As in, who's serious about going up and which sides look bound for lower mid table obscurity at best. Of course there will always be exceptions, like back in 2016 when by the end of October we were down in 21st and finished the season only 4 pts off the po's, while Exeter were in 19th and yet finished the season in 5th place. But tbf, nobody was expecting the two sides to be down there for long and so it proved to be.

5th - Macclesfield H - Win
8th - Northampton H (Tinpot Cup) - don't care; meaningless reserves/kids game
12th - Salford A - Draw
19th - Exeter H - Loss
22nd - Grimsby H - Draw
26th - Northampton A - Draw

After a horror September on paper which we came through with 5 points from 5 games in we go into a very favourable October... football and Port Vale in particular don’t always sit well with this!

Morecambe H - Watch in envy as most teams smack Morecambe at home, we’ve failed to score in their last three visits including the top goal scorers of the 92 in our promotion season!

Last season Vale lost one of the most one sided smash and grabs you’ll see when the Morecambe keeper turned into Gordon Banks!

Morecambe are struggling this season and we need to be winning. Port Vale 2 Morecambe 0

Macclesfield Town A - Vale only need to go back to last Tuesday for a win at Moss Rose but both sides will be vastly different in this. Macc seem an awkward opponent although have stopped winning games. Macclesfield T 1 Port Vale 1

Stevenage H - The annual cheating, time wasting and feigning visit from Stevenage who infuriated Tom Pope so much he publically blasted them claiming he would rather retire than play for them and had a Twitter spat. Hopefully under new management they’ve changed and we get a game of football, Vale should be looking for their first ever league win against Boro. Port Vale 1 Stevenage 0

Bradford A - Used to always get a result against these. Went about 10-12 games unbeaten but haven’t won the last few, this has the hallmarks of a decent effort but punished by one error late on. Bradford 1 Port Vale 0

Oldham H - Port Vales class of 19 against a side impersonating Port Vale 16! Two chalk and cheese performances against these last season with an excellent away win and shocker at home. Should be looking to win this one.

Port Vale 1 Oldham 0

10 points would do nicely, although 8 would be respectable given the fixtures

8 points would keep us in that solid mid table position. The home games look easy on paper but our record against morecambe at home is terrible we have never beat stevenage in a league game before and I cant remember the last time we beat oldham at home.

Probably the toughest month we'll have this season. Off the back of playing Cheltenham, we've got another 3 teams in the top 7 this month, plus a good Colchester side who will be up there. Exciting.

On paper, October looks much easier than last month so I'm positive that we can get a decent haul of points.

Morecambe H - We are due to give these a beating, and despite still having some injuries and a suspension, this is the day.
3-0

Macclesfield Town A - Macc are doing better than I expected, but this has to be viewed as winnable.
1-2

Stevenage H - another struggling team to give us 3pts?
2-0

Bradford A - Not a happy hunting ground recently, so a narrow defeat.
2-1

Oldham H - we should hope to win this also.
2-0

If we are serious about challenging for promotion this season, we need to start finding some form.

Scunthorpe (H) : As I said, if we are serious about promotion then we need to be winning this. Scunthorpe haven’t had a good start and we need to take advantage of that. 2-0

Swindon (A): Tough one this. Although Swindon have dropped points at home. They could be there for the taking with a bit of luck on the day, but I’ll take a point. 1-1

Carlisle (H): Another game we should hope to win. 3-1

Leyton Orient (H): Beat them earlier this season in the carabao cup and they were very poor, hopefully the same here. 2-0

Exeter (A): Another tough game on the road against our rivals. Tough to predict with this one a few games away yet. Will be interesting to see how Exeter respond to losing against Grimsby. I’d love to take all 3 here, but a point will do. 2-2

Really should be getting 9 points at home this month, but those two away games are tough.

Oldham (A) - Hard to say, we were good against Salford but fortunate against Plymouth. The pessimist in me says draw - 1-1

Newport (H) - We always, always struggle against Newport. I see them getting a last minute winner - 1-2

Walsall (A) - Two defeats in a row - 0-2

Macclesfield (H) - Back to winning ways and at a canter as well - 3-0

Grimsby (A) - Would absolutely rip your hand off for a draw and I'll think we'll get it - 1-1

So 5 points out of 15 and we move down to mid-table mediocrity.

Tough month for us (I seem to say this every month)

Exeter (H) we have s terrible record Vs Exeter 5 defeats in a row I think. They had s poor result last time out. I'd take a point now. 2-2.

Mansfield (A) FLT game, couldn't care less about it hopefully Artell feels the same. Mansfield 2-0 Crewe.

Carlisle (A) Carlisle seem very average at best so this should be the sort of game were winning. Carlisle 1-3 Crewe

Swindon (H) another tough game for us. Thankfully it's at GR, our record at home Vs Swindon isn't too bad compared to away from home where it's pretty awful. Tight game hopefully edge out a win. Crewe 2-1 Swindon.

Colchester (H) midweek game Vs another decent team who I've got a strong feeling will come good and be challenging rights the top end of the league. I will go for a pessimistic draw Crewe 1-1 Colchester

Forest Green (A) so far we've had some poor results here. Should be a football game though which will suit us, but I still expect it to be tight, they don't tend to conceed many. Fgr 1-1 Crewe

9 points and unbeaten would be another decent return. Gone for 3 draws though in tight games which could realistically go either way, wouldn't suprise me if we won one of them and lost one which would give us even more points.

Oi Crewe, our game on the 26th is our 130th year celebration, there'll be lots of former players in attendance, happy hour in all the bars, kids go free, special souvenirs on sale etc.

Do NOT piss on our parade. Thanks.

Likely the only thing getting pissed on will be our fans in your ramshackle away end AGAIN. We might just have to invade the home end again.

Northampton (A) - We’re usually pretty good here and there will be a big-ish away support. Think I’ll err on the side of optimism and say 1-1.

Wombles (A) - Don’t care.

Walsall (H) - Always good to see the Orient of the Midlands. 1-0

Grimsby (A) - Things are going to start going a bit wonky again here. 3-1 to the fish.

Plymouth (A) - 5-0 doinking. Will laugh my tits off if we replicate the youth team’s 3-2 win during our relegation season, though.

Carlisle (H) - Carlisle are dreadful, aren’t they? 0-1

If dempsters in charge we won win one.

We only beat Scunthorpe at home as they were shit.

Hopefully he’s gone soon and we can try and rescue the season

What on earth is that?????? Ive seen some tinpot things in life but that wins hands down. You've actually somehow managed to make that away end look even worst. I will go in the home end again I think :D:D:D

Really tough October for us. Here is how I see it panning out.

Bradford A - This is a bad time to have injuries and both our centre backs are out as well as Keshi Anderson who has started the season in fine form. I can only see one winner here. 3-1 Loss.

Plymouth H - My first game of the season. I think a draw. 1-1

Crewe A - My second game of the season. This should be a cracker between 2 sides who like to play good, fast attacking football. There should be goals. 3-2 Loss

Stevenage H - Surely we can beat these? Win 2-0

Crawley A - I'll try and go to this game as well. Another big test against a side who have done much better than I anticipated they would this season.
Draw 1-1.

Only 5 points in October for us will probably see us around mid-table. A tough month on paper.

Optimistic at the moment with Flynn staying & Inniss due to return soon after serving his suspension. I’m hoping we can continue our good home form through the month.

Carlisle home win
Exeter EFL cup home lose
Cheltenham away draw
Scunthorpe home win
Crawley home win
Colchester away lose

I predict about 8 points from 5 games for the U's. Maybe 6 as beating Grimsby at home could be tricky for us given our home form.

Predicting a rocky and frustrating start to October, Osadebe scoring for Macclesfield, and the usual loss to Exeter.

Don’t fancy us against Swindon, Vaughan out suspended doesn’t help, Morecambe away can’t think of many wins there historically and a expect another disappointing draw similar to last weekend. Pick up for the end of the month, with two home games played PV loads and unbeaten in something like last 8, Mac away to finish, 10 points.

We have our captain and best defender Dion Conroy out long term, his defensive partner Mathieu Baudry is also out injured, Ballard who we signed from Arsenal to cover them is out for 4 months injured and had to go back. So we really have issues at the back, Zeki Fryers has had to play CB and done ok, and Wellens, despite having 2 CBs on the bench last weekend didn't bring either of them on!!

I think you'll do a number on us on Saturday to be honest. Quite a fitting game all being told given the sad passing of Downsborough this week who was a star for both clubs.

Also, we'll be wearing our purple third shirt, which is used to raise awareness and funds for the darby-rimmer-mnd foundation. Stephen Darby another player a big part of both clubs' histories.

Think the Bradford game will come down to who copes with their injuries better.

Baudry isn’t definitely out - he was 50/50 last weekend - and I don’t think Bradford use battering ram forwards. Get Doughty in the starting XI.

Anyhow, I reckon we’ve played our best football with 1 up front. Whether Yates before Doyle signed, or Doyle while Yates was suspended.

At least it should actually be a game of football - don’t think Bradford go in for shithousery.
