Oldham vs Walsall

I feel like everytime I discuss us in a match thread at the minute that I have no idea on what I'm predicting, or what the first XI will be. Lots of new players, formations, injuries, half fit key players. No idea on what will be the outcome of the game. We played 'okay' last Saturday vs Wimbledon, but they missed chances and we took ours, we looked very ropey at the back. That was followed up by a pathetic performance vs Yeovil in the week, quite a few of the key players missing though, so we shouldn't be too harsh on that.

I'll plump for another 1-1 draw, although our record at Oldham really isn't that great of late, last seasons performance was one of the nails in the automatic promotion coffin.

Can't imagine there will be many travelling.

As established, this season is a step into the complete unknown for us, with an almost entirely new squad and coaching staff, so it was heartening to see us play well in beating Wigan on Tuesday.

Yourselves are another side with a large turnaround this summer, so hopefully the gulf in teammate's understanding of each other hopefully won't be as pronounced as it was against Millwall last week.

Also today we honour or greatest servant. The great Jimmy Frizzell died during the summer. Over 22 years association with the club as a player, then manager, his name became synonymous with Oldham Athletic. As boss he took us from Division Four to Division Two, setting us up for our glory years in the early 90s under Joe Royle. His family, former teammates, and players who worked under him will be in attendance today, and the new home end will be renamed in his honour.

Didn't go but from all accounts we played quite well.

Both teams lacked any real quality. Not a bad game considering it was nil nil but still not great.

Think 0-0 was a fair result.

McKay should have scored with his header, Flynn should have buried the one on one, and Erwin most definitely should have buried the rebound.

Granted, the above makes it sound like we dominated, but in fairness it was a fairly even game.

Not bad for a 0-0.

Never many goals at Bounday Park when we visit. I'll take a clean sheet, 4 points from 2 games with a bunch of half fit strangers.

Decent start, even if, on paper, before the season, we have played 2 bottom half sides (IMO).
