The fine was absolutely ludicrous - I agree. As are UEFA's reactions to much more serious issues like the racism you mention.

I was being facetious with the anthem comment, though. I was referring more to their general attitude to the competition. Manchester City fans have never really taken to the Champions League and I wonder if they would be quite as apathetic towards it if Pep were to deliver them a trip to the final or even the trophy itself - which isn't all that unlikely.

Well, indeed. The bigger picture is still not looking quite right on that one.

I'm still not sure I'd consider their fanbase apathetic towards the Champion's League. I still get the impression that it's hard to really pitch what a 'success' would be, in the way that they're now a big boy and they're not quite sure how to deal with it. Is it better to get knocked out in the last 16 by the greatest side our generation has seen? Or in the last 8 or 4 by someone else?

Maybe it's just because I've generally found Man City fans to be quite grounded, but over the last week I've had one City fan I know sacrifice Sunday for a trip to Kiev (admittedly, that probably says more about him) and another waxing on about how sad it is to see the FA Cup treated that way, but the priority is Europe.

*shrug* I dunno what to make of it, but I'm not sure I can stretch the point you're making to cover them not being arsed about the CL, as a desire for a genuinely good showing in that seems to have percolated from owners down to the very bottom.

On the other hand, I'm not qualified to speak on behalf of another clubs fanbase, just by my own empirical day-to-day interactions with City types.

And perhaps my opinion is skewed by the likes of Silkyman on this very forum - I suppose we'll find out how they react once Pep arrives and does the business!
