VAR is a joke, they were still getting things wrong in the world cup.

They were for some debatable decisions like handball which is a negative aspect of this .

Looking forward to seeing some decisions actually go against known cheats Man Utd.

Man Utd caught getting around FFP by receiving payments for friendlies that never occurred. I hope they're shut down for this.

The media vendetta against Sterling is just bizarre. It really does need explaining.

It's like a schoolbook example of what institutional racism is. He can do no right; when he spends he brags and when he doesn't he's cheap.

Collymore in The Guardian yesterday - a typically muddled job, with his pointless Ian Wright vendetta dragging the whole thing off course, but there's a reasonable point.

Sterling's post is excellent and probably Collymore's piece would have been better focused if he'd asked why the most incisive example of race-in-media analysis has to come from a 24 year old footballer's instagram, and not the broadsheets whose quickly readied editorials have endeavored to appear so supportive.

The best defender in the league this season, the one and only mighty Joe Gomez, has signed a new deal till 2024! :db:

Nice news to temper the disappointment of the injury.

Gomez's clearance off the line in the derby, tweaking his ankle to divert the ball backward while the rest of his body slid at full stretch in the entirely opposite direction, was one of the most glorious displays of defensive athleticism I've seen in some time.

Very much hoping he's out for not a second more than the six weeks stated.

Well we do have one of City's physio's now, so I'm sure he could come up with some concoction in order to 'speed up' the recovery process. ;)

When Gomez came into the side this term as centre back, thats what we wanted to see; to see if he could handle it, and my word, he has not only done that, he has excelled and been better than our wildest dreams! One tick in the box for the transfer committee there!

There has to be more to it than that though, or it would happen to all young black footballers. That's not to say it doesn't to some extent, but with Sterling it's completely mental.

I agree that it's mental. It probably has a lot to do with him leaving Liverpool for City. I think many people would perceive that as greedy, and at a stretch disrespectful. But given that he's young and black, it's perceived as ten times worse. Then it kind of snowballed (because of institutional racism).

A similar example is P.K. Subban in the NHL. It all comes down to that if you want to be liked and respected in the public eye, you either have to be perfect or a white male. It's getting better but fuck me is it moving slow.

I think it's also down to England not having a star that makes headlines for the wrong reasons so they look to invent ones.

Perhaps, you like having one. But usually it's a white person, whom you (ie your press) tend to love even more because they are fallible. Gazza, Beckham, Rooney; their controversies add to why you love them. In a sense, like Sterling can do no right, they can do no wrong.

Don't agree with that. Gazza yeah because his worst controversy was basically just being laddish. Beckham was vilified after his world cup red and Rooney was hammered for being a granny shagger. You're just changing the narrative there because it suits the current situation. The key difference is that they actually did something you can consider wrong, Becks red, Rooneys Gran, Terrys alleged racism or paid tours! But no, they weren't loved at the time like you're implying. I should imagine DB recieved a fair number of death threats at the time.

It says top footballer, so I think you're safe.

Well you know the papers - they seem to call some kid at non-league level a star/top footballer in stories like this.

I mean wouldn't surprise me if it was Troy Deeney!
