Ticking a couple of mine off this summer in Munich and Rome. Ticked Prague off in September as well. Looking ahead to 2017, me and my mate are edging towards wanting to go to Peru and do the Inca trail/Machu Picchu etc.

Also hopefully gonna do an interrail trip through Europe which is also a bucket list sort of thing. Start in Croatia and work upwards.

OK, if it's on the list enjoy the good and tolerate the bad. Pluses were spectacular scenery (great birding) and getting to Machu Pichu at dawn (spectacular and fascinating) before the buses rolled up the monstrous road......oh and the hot shower and buying clean underwear in Aguas Calientes. Otherwise, the trail was fairly crowded. We left camp late and missed the worst as we birded and moved at a slow pace. Unfortunately that meant that for a few kilometres after each camp, the crap and tissue paper just off the trail were fresh. Despite "rules" about taking out all latrine contents, many were too squeamish to use the facilities. The camps were very very crowded and the dust was biological weapon grade dangerous. Hand and general hygiene essential. It was definitely worth it but the walking and camping away from the main Inca Trail was much more enjoyable.

Happy memories of listening to a Cienciano (Cusco) match on the radio with the porter crew and a bottle of brandy at the last camp but didn't get to a live match.

Driven by wildlife/birding ambitions, we did the Atacama, Ballestas Islands, Lima and Tambopata River from Puerto Maldonado, as well as Cusco and the Inca Trail. That would be interesting and enjoyable for non-birders but expensive if budget is an issue. There are lots of great treks around Cusco and the Sacred Valley if that is your interest.

We did the Salkantay trek which starts and finishes at the same place. It was a bit cheaper and easier to book. It has less historical interest along the route but is prettier and goes a bit higher - it's definitely a bit harder than the Inca trail but I'd massively recommend it.

Forgot to add Sarajevo to my initial list, which I'm ticking off next month. Hopefully get to the Tunnel museum, walking down Sniper Alley will be a bit surreal, I imagine.

Most fascinating think to me about Peru is the Nazca lines. Fantastic they are. Would love to go and see them in a fly over in a helicopter or something.

There are flights, in less than re-assuring planes with some cowboy operators. I'm not sure if I was lucky or unlucky to get bumped from ours to make room for a group of Japanese school kids but we had some great bird watching and visited the giant dunes in the local area that day.

Go to the Goldfish Bar.

You can also pay a couple of quid at a museum to see the trousers of the man who started World War I.
