Planet Earth returned last night and was great, did anyone catch it?

Those racer snakes chasing the baby iguanas were bloody terrifying.

That Iguana escaping from the snakes is the most exciting piece of TV this year imo. Run little guy run!!!

I liked the moment where the iguana and snake just looked at each other for what seemed like an age and then the snake moved an inch and the iguana legged it.

Crazy how it knew what and where to go just after it hatched.

I was a little disappointed TBH. I've seen loads of wildlife programmes. And this just seem to repeat things I'd already seen even stuff David Attenborough had done.

But the snakes bit was new to me and looked like something out a horror film. By far the best bit.

This might just be me but I have to say I don't like the modern wildlife programmes that use 10-15 minutes at the end to show you how it was filmed, who was involved etc...I couldn't care less, I'd rather see 10 minutes extra footage of the animals.

I actually really enjoy the end part on how it was filmed, how they got to the island, how they set it up, how the penguins interacted etc.

The extra bit at the end is because when the BBC sell the show to other channels/countries everybody else has adverts so they can't show 60 mins of footage in an hour slot. So the beeb make it that long for us and then when they sell it on the others can just sack the extra 15 mins off.

They've been recycling stuff for ages now, but it's still enjoyable. The quality of footage gets better every time. I'm also a fan of the bit at the end and Dessy's theory makes sense, but it's a relatively (last 7 or 8 years or so?) new thing isn't it? Did we used to get extra footage that other countries didn't get, then?

This week wasn't as good as last week. If I recall from the first Planet Earth, mountains was one of the least interesting ecosystems.

The ecosystems are simpler and the range of species are less weird and varied but the camera work, landscapes and images were some of the most stunning for me.

My opinion is also coloured by the fact that I'm grabbed by places I've been or would like to visit and animals/birds that I've seen or would like to see - and I'd take cold and breathless or hot and breathless over the bugs and creepies of the jungle or the vulnerability of swimming out of my depth anywhere, never mind under the water.

Yep, it was a little quirky last night as well with the bears and the flamingos. What I really like to see is the hunt.

Getting footage of snow leopards was most impressive for me. It must have took a while to get that 5-10 mins of video.

Thought it was good/interesting for different reasons to the last episode.

Those flamingos that got stuck in the ice were utterly hilarious. I enjoyed this episode too, the snow leopards are beautiful and it was genuinely interesting to see their life. I did find the last ten minutes boring this week with the handgliders compared to the drama of the week before.

Really looking forward to the Jungle as I find insects utterly fascinating in terms of their diversity.

Thought the bobcat put in a good workman like performance that has seemingly slipped under the radar.

Yeah actually I said at the time I really like bobcats. Pretty cool animals.

I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, but so far I've noticed that there hasn't been a violent kill that that has been filmed in its entirety. Don't get me wrong, I don't tune in every Sunday hoping to see a crocodile rip a wildebeest's throat out as I'm indifferent to witnessing such scenes, after all it's nature. However, some people I know have said they think showing the kills is gratuitous and upsetting. I wonder if the programme makers have reacted accordingly. Having said that it's the great planes next week so that might change.

Also I've noticed Dave is making mention of environmental change in each episode. I'm already convinced about global warming, but when Dave is saying it, it sounds very convincing because it's Dave.

There's definitely been less and they seem to have placed more of an onus on prey escaping. I know people that also say the same, so it wouldn't surprise me if they are toning that side down a bit. It could also be that they didn't get good enough footage of any kills, though.
