We’ve played 7 of the top 10, beaten 6 and drawn 1, conceding a 95th minute goal, with Exeter and Shrewsbury left to play.

We won once last season against the top 6. Beat Sheff Wed towards the start of the season.


That in itself is a massive improvement, but we’ve got to keep up the results against teams in the bottom half of the table, starting with MK Dons away on Saturday.

There is also a very long way to go. We need to try and stay as injury free as possible. We’ve currently got 4 out injured, including Mayor who is out for about 6 weeks.

Interestingly I looked at our points haul compared to the same time last season, we are 6 points and 6 places better off, Plymouth were also top at the league after 13 games last year, you are 2 points better off.

As you say though the improvement against the top 6 is your most noticeable change.

Nothing at the moment to make me feel that Argyle will fall away this season. They've had good players missing and are still winning games regularly. Schumacher's tactics have been outstanding.

The only thing that could scupper them is a big club coming in for Schumacher. I reckon he'd want to see this season through though, and he should if he's got any sense.

Only seen a small part of their game with Ipswich on TV so I don’t know. At this point of the season though they are averaging well over 2 points a game which doing it over that length of time says they are serious contenders.

We got 80 points last season and almost all of them were from teams that finished below us. We've improved against the top sides already which is where it really matters and *seem* to have a greater strength in depth this year, as well as improved loanees.

Injuries starting to hit now, especially with Mayor for a couple months, and a red card and 3 game suspension for Scarr who has been colossal at the back. Only time will tell but watching us play thus far, we're a better side and squad than the one that fell away last year when the injuries hit on our tough run in!

It is too early to tell. Suspensions, injuries, loanees being called back and if Cooper was sold could all have a negative effect.

However, I am at the stage now that I would be disappointed if we are not top six. Last year this was never the case. We are a stronger side, far more flexible (we are much harder to figure out than last year), the new players are an upgrade (the one I am most excited about has not played yet). We are playing attractive football. Home Park is a solid Citadel. The new system is working brilliantly. And let’s face it in the best Napoleonic tradition we have had some luck where oppositions have not scored when perhaps they should.

The challenge for us is to beat the lower placed teams who will play a very different style to the top eight.

Cooper will keep us in games and Schuey‘s brains is winning some (His win percentage is something like 58%). Both Coops and Schuey seem to learn from their mistakes and get better and better. Schuey is fast becoming our top trump.

There has been a discussion on this forum as to who has the strongest/deepest squad. There is, in my view, no argument here the answer is Ipswich and Wednesday. However, Schuey has an interesting conceptual way of addressing this question re the subs. He refers to starters and finishers (as they do in other sports such as baseball and rugby). Moreover, he takes a horses for courses approach, the starting eleven varies depending on the oppo. Some weeks a player is a starter and others a finisher. The players have bought into this creed. As an example of the togetherness (one of the advantages of long travel) the other week Hardie started, and Cosgrove replaced him and scored. At the final whistle Hardie sprinted on to the pitch and jumped on to Cosgrove’s back with a huge smile on his face. The sum is greater than the parts.

The club suggest our budget is about 12-14th biggest in the league. If true, we are punching way above our weight.

I was impressed with u in the 2nd half for about 20mins but you gotta admit that you should have gone down to ten men and a penalty awarded against you which would have made it 2 nil.

To be honest mate all I really remember was you doing a number on us first half and us turning up in the second half and that a draw was probably a fair result. I genuinely cannot remember either of the incidents you have mentioned

When I moved down here I was hooked every Saturday afternoon - I could not believe it. Never heard such biased commentating before, it was brilliant. Which other commentator would utter the words “Dion Dublin suck on that”, just after we scored.

When I moved down here I was hooked every Saturday afternoon - I could not believe it. Never heard such biased commentating before, it was brilliant. His bias was truly unreal. Unlistenable as a city fan but you couldn't fault the man for his passion. A colourful chap.

A very close family friend of mine was Sparksy. Growing up he was my (non biological) 'Uncle' Gordon. My Aunt said a few weeks back that she'd be surprised if he made Christmas and unfortunately once cancer takes hold it truly can act so horribly and devastatingly quickly.

As Trapdoor says his bias was stuff of legend on Radio Devon, but a more passionate and engaging chap you couldn't have met. He properly hated Exeter as well. Refused to stop in Exeter services as he didn't want to 'boost their economy' and also when we won the title one year I recall he pulled off the motorway just to drive through Exeter city centre beeping his horn shouting out the window. Legend RIP!

PG are you the person on Pasoti who had Gordon commentating when they played FIFA with their mates as a kid? I thought that was so cool.

As an aside to this - was there not a commentator in the south west called Martin dean ? (Ugly )?
I remember him on endsleigh extra commentating on Torquay / Exeter and argyle games. What happened to him ?
