Port Vale v Rochdale

Not nearly as funny as Calvin Andrew deflecting the ball into the net.

When we played you in April. You (wrongly) claimed goals were offside, cheating officials. Excuses.

Some other Rochdale fan quoted you and defeats to Scunthorpe, Millwall and Chesterfield were full of excuses about the officials.

I'm sure you've been in the running for the TFF L1/L2 sore loser award, if not the outright winner.

Rochdale are toss on that showing and we made harder work of it than we should have done. 1st half was scrappy with nothing in it, 2nd half we could and should have scored 3. We have a really good spine in Alnwick, Streete, Smith, Grant, Tavares, Foley and Forrester, much better than last season. We don't have a lot of goals in the side though and I do worry how we'll fair when a side goes 1 up against us. A rapid winger who can beat players and another striker, preferably experienced in this league, and we'll be looking good for a genuine play-off push. I thought the young lad Jones looked good in the bit of time he had on the pitch which included winning the penalty that Hooper fucked up.

Solid performance and a well deserved 3 points.

We're a lower half team. It'd be nice if Hill actually picked his strongest team and stopped dicking about signing his mates.

So frustrating. I feel sorry for Jamie Allen, Callum Camps etc. So much talent but not a lot around them.

Having Calvin Andrew nowhere near the starting 11 would help. The guy wouldn't be good enough to get in the Renford Rejects side.

Agreed. We have no other recognised strikers other than Joe Bunney who is just as bad.

You have some promising players in midfield from what I saw this evening in-particular. But when I saw Andrews was up front for you, well, lets just say it gives you a bit of a lift. He really was dog shit for us.

I thought we ok in the first half and did enough to get into the stride of the game.

Like against Southend on Saturday, in the second half we upped our game, played some half decent stuff at times and it could have been at least 4 if we could be a bit more clinical in front of goal.

I thought Alnwick, Smith, Tavares, Grant & Foley all had decent games. I even thought Mbamba looked a lot better tonight compared to other games he's played in.

I thought Rochdale's game plan was to try and bully us but it didn't really work out, so once we got our noses in front it was really pretty much game over from that point on.

Overall I think we are still work in progress and aren't the finished artical yet, but I feel we will get better over the coming months once we have gelled a bit more, but overall I'm very happy with 7 points out of a possible 9 and also keeping 3 clean sheets.

We are an odd team to watch. We seem hopeless going forward, nobody has a clue how to create a decent chance most of the time, just passing the ball around the edge of the box. Rochdale had several shots in the first half, fortunately all straight at Alnwick or wide.

Absolute nonsense. You must be a Stoke fan on a wind up.

First half very stop start, Opposing managers have been so lazy Hill included in seeing we have signed foreign players so let's kick them off the park, Southend tried, Rochdale tried (Bradford generally do that anyway) but most of the ones who've played have been defenders or Tavares who is a pit bull anyway.

Rochdale and Southend followed a similar pattern, both looked pants (or we made them look pants) and once we've scored its been game over as Dale as with Southend then just started hoofing it towards Andrews head from their own half which Smith and Streete would defend with ease all night.

Smith is incredible. Youth lad, sent to Torquay.. Wins their player of the year... Comes back ready and he has been stand out in pre season and even better in the season in which we've basically conceded one real save from Alnwick in each of the three league games and comfortably kept a clean sheet. Even Streete has come on leaps and bounds after a on/off season last year. Smith deserves his goal and looks set to be our first real youth talent to go on and play at a higher level in years. Premier League bound possibly.

Grant was solid, especially after an early booking and a couple of dives from Dale players first half trying to get him sent off. Tavares looks a top midfielder at this level and Foley is keeping up his form from last year.

Hoppers penalty was awful, the lad from Birmimgham had a mental ten minute debut winning the penalty then leaving Lillis on his arse 20 yards from goal but was well blocked by the defender.

De Freitas looks good when he came on and loved the fancy flicks him and Tavares were pulling off when we were ahead.

So far we look extremely solid and not easy to break down which if we can keep up gives us a massive boost. Just need to get some pace going forward and if we can get the attacking side balanced with our solid defence and midfield so far we could build something good. Early days though but feel ten times better than a week ago!

The jury is still very much out on some of our signings like Mac-Intosch, Amoros, Mbamba and Cicilia. But I think Knops, Tavares and Forrester are very much proving to be an upgrade over Dickinson/McGivern, O'Connor and Leitch-Smith. De Freitas has something about him too but he will find it difficult to play in his best position when we have three very good players there in Grant, Tavares and Foley.

Bruno seems like a real tactician, something you could never attribute to Rob Page despite the decent job he did with us overall.

Some haven't featured so can't judge (Kiko as well). Mbamba looked decent, been impressed with De Freitas both cameos and being an ex France U20 should have that quality.

Jerome Thomas should improve as his fitness builds too. Another hour in the bank tonight for him.

Why do opposition fans claim that the opponent came out trying to kick them off the park? Complete nonsense. Fouls happen. It's part of the game.

What's the excuse? You were better than us... In what I described a dour game. If you think it was a good game you need an eye test.

Well i really enjoyed our performance, but then again i am actually overdue for an eye test so maybe you are right.

Still, given how turbulent our close season was, 7 points of 9 and not a single goal conceded in 3 games is a pretty damn good start.

Good luck for the season, have a lot of respect and admiration for Rochdale. Good club. Wilbutts Lane Chippy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's nothing more pleasing than your team keeping a clean-sheet. We also play some very nice football that's pleasing on the eye but have yet to find a real cutting edge. It's very early days yet obviously but we have a real solidarity in the side and a manager who, despite his lack of experience, obviously knows how to set up a team.

If we keep stopping teams creating barely anything and keeping clean sheets then your already getting at least a point so Bruno seems to be starting with getting that sorted (Centre half partnership of Smith and Streete which has barely any experience considering Smith has played 4 games and Streete what 20?)

We look set to get a left back which is crucial with Kiko not fit and Knops taking a knock (after 3 or 4 late challenges as he cleared the ball during the game last night!) and a winger and striker to come. We need pace, Alex came on and had that so we have that option but more pace out wide would help. Its just how do we improve the attack without detrimenting the solid back line we have as it means maybe moving to two up top.

I thought last night we played football when we could, and dug in when we had to. Overall a job well done and another clean sheet where, bar one save in the first half, we kept 'dale at a good arms length away from goal.

So far I've thought that Bradford, considering the hype, Southend and Rochdale were pretty poor. But I wonder how much it's a case of us doing a real job on them, and them being better than being given credit for? To be fair Southend looked pretty shit, but you could see that Rochdale had some good players, just not up front.

Possibly when you consider Southend pasted Blades yesterday and Bradfords results since. We've been defensively solid and frustrated them well. Lets be fair Mooney and Cox are hardly shit at this level but we never gave them a sniff.

Your lot have been long ball merchants for as long as I can remember. Not so much a negative thing as you play to your strengths, and James Hanson would be absolutely useless without getting the ball forward early and into the box. As of yet Carlisle have probably played the best football out of the teams we have faced, a League Two team! Although we were every bit as bad as they were good on the day, a truly appalling performance that has since been somewhat banished. Rochdale also played some decent stuff in midfield but were toothless, as to be expected when starting with Calvin Andrews as your main forward!
