Think that puts the Ronaldo Messi debate to bed I'm afraid. Ronaldo is just on another planet to anybody who's stepped on a football field.

There is no surer sign of somebody who knows jack shit about football than them preferring Ronaldo over Messi.

What a game, have to say Spain were easily the superior side but Ronaldo was unreal and got Portugal a point pretty much by himself.

Preference is one thing, I wouldn't judge someone's football knowledge on that.

How you rate a player, that's a different story.

In short, to summarise, to break it down for you - not to put a finer point on it, to stop beating around the bush here, you chose the wrong word there, mate.

See how much of a threat Messi is when you put a cross in the box. Ronaldo has everything for the complete player including power and strength and always turning up in big matches.

What a great game of football. And Ronaldo was just incredible tonight. Costa’s first goal was superb too, shows what Chelsea have lost. Those two will surely both make the quarters.

No threat at all.

Yeah just quote that bit and ignore the rest where I say he's the complete footballer. Your obviously a Messi fan boy so I'll leave it there.

I'm a fan of more goals, significantly more assists, more successful dribbles, less turnovers, more chances created, more key passes and whatever the hell else you can possibly measure that actually matters.

But yes Ronaldo is taller.

You have to find a picture from over 10 years ago where there wasn't a defender nowhere near him, good argument.

9 years and no, the stats do the arguing for me.

Are we really doing this, having the silly Messi v Ronaldo debate again? Ronaldo scores goals, Messi does the same to a slightly lesser extent, but does everything else better. That's it, both are amazing.

This is incorrect.

Their goal tallies are similar, I haven't looked, but thought Ronny had scored more. Tbh I don't care, Messi is and always has been the better player no matter what the newly convicted tax-dodger does.

Think Ronaldo has scored about 40 more but he has about 40 fewer assists but has played around 150 games more.

Messi’s ratios are superior.

I agree though really, both amazing and different footballers and we should just enjoy them both while we still can.

Ronaldo could go on for years but you might worry a bit for Portugal when he does finally stop playing.

Spain as expected looked like a side unaffected by the management change and Costa is a real beast when on song.

Both teams ought to win the next 2 games so the goal difference might come in handy and on tonight's evidence there might be a few.

Just a quick 2 cents, not that I want to debate, but for me, Messi doing it all at one club and not replicating it in different leagues slightly plays against him. He dragged Argentina through qualifying last world cup, so maybe the arguments mute.

Ronaldo was superb tonight, but the rest looked poor. Bernado Silva has been excellent for city but he and the rest looked poor. Portugal will suffer with Pepe and Fonte at the back as the tournament goes on.

Spain look the mixed bag they are. Strange to see De Gea make such a simple mistake. Get them all out now Dave. Look bad for Spain and stay at United.

"A little sub-plot to it is now the pressure is mounted on Messi's shoulders after watching Cristiano here," said Ferdinand.

Just wow, what an ignorant bellend.

Ronald is simply amazing.

What a game, Portugal lucky to get a draw but that’s what the World Cup is all about!

Messi and Ronaldo definitely have a sporting rivalry and love to one-up one another. I think "pressure" is the wrong word but seeing Ronaldo get a hat-trick in the first game of the World Cup will almost certainly motivate Messi to match or best Cristiano's output throughout the tournament.

Ronaldo went into this tournament level with Brian McBride and now has more than Lionel Messi. I guess this finally puts the debate to bed, Ronaldo is undoubtedly better than Brian McBride.

Debate settled, the footballing behemoth that is Phil Neville, thinks Ronaldo is the greatest player of all time.
