Wasn't this virtually a reserve team competition anyway before they made the rule change?

Can you imagine the mouth watering prospect of Norwich U21s v Stoke U21s at Wembley in the JPT Final.

Idiotic, stupid, shit idea. And the fact that they are increasing the prize money for the u21 league just shows how clueless they are. What do they think is going to happen? Clubs stockpile too many players as it is, this will only make it worse. They'll sweep up all the best talent from lower league academies, and these players won't get a look in of first team football until they are finally released at the age of 23. By this time said players will be millionaires with next to no first team experience to show for it.

I hope every lower league side breaks as many U21 legs as possible in the opening 5 minutes of every game, resulting in matches being forcibly abandoned and their cunty, stockpiled little pricks getting either injured or zero experience. Fuck the Premier League.

£3m prize money for the winner of the U21 league. The world's gone mad. In comparison, when we won the League 1 title in 2005, the prize money for Luton was just £50,000 (no idea what it is now).

Just pales into insignificance compared to the £1.6bn paid to clubs in the Premier League last season.

Does anybody really care about the JPT in the first place?

I haven't ever been to a JPT/LDV cup game because I see it as a second rate competition that only really gets worthwhile if you find yourself in the regional finals - it's a similar level competition to the FA Trophy in my mind and I only went to the home semi final leg and final of that too.

I won't lose any sleep if they put under 21 premier teams in it as long as we're allowed to put our youths out as well.

I go to JPT home games if I'm able to, but certainly wouldn't bother going to Northampton vs West Ham U21's on a Tuesday night. Can't see many disagreeing with me and you certainly wouldn't get 2,000 West Ham fans travelling to make the up for the lack of gate money.

Once again it's all about the Premier League. Can't they all just fuck off and form a super league?

Greedy fucking Wankers and that are so out of touch with everything in this game!

If attendances are below 100 then they'll stop doing it soon enough. Time for people to put their money where their mouth is.

A more organised boycott from fans would be better, would get more press and therefore be more effective. Be good if the League 1 and 2 clubs' supporters groups would get together and boycott on mass.

they have forgotten to mention that teams from the under 21 pl can only drawn each other from the regional qf onwards to make sure they will get the most possible amount of match experience

That's what I mean.

To be fair, I'll have no problem at all cutting out the JPT from our fixtures next year. That'll be four who went to the Swindon, Millwall and Wembley games off their attendances. Got together a group of ten for the final and just won't be acknowledging it next year.

The bigger annoyance by far will be if they introduce the U21 teams into League Two, because then it's bye bye to English professional football for me.

We always talk about how taken for granted English fans feel, would be nice to think people will stand up for themselves.

To be honest I'm not really interested in the JPT, however the principle in there that the FA really couldn't give a toss about the lower leagues. When we see loads of ex PL rejects being released because they're not good enough compared to some 50M overvalued foreign player it will all be on the FA.

They'll surely have to scrap the "start 6 first team players or get fined" rule. That would be taking the piss if they enforced that while allowing premier league teams to enter with their youth teams.

I am actually not too fussed about them being involved in this, 90% of the clubs/managers do not give a flying f*ck anyway and them few who do will probs get to the finals regardless as U21 teams won't be very good at all anyway.

but i do worry it'll be their way to force them into the league, plus my bigger argument is this IT WON'T IMPROVE THEM ONE BIT.

does anyone at all anywhere in the fanbase of every club in English football genuinly believe like the execs at the top that giving young players 4-5 competitive games will suddenly see any of the 20 clubs in the top flight putting youth players into their first team squads rather than go to europe and buy cheap top flight players from abroad.

its easy to solve english football, but it invoves hurting them clubs at the top and they hold the power, nothing else they can do really to turn it about.

On the contrary, our progress in the competition to the final (and semis the year after) was one of the few bright spots during the 5 years before we got raped and relegated to non-league.

Admittedly, it's not a competition I care greatly about but it gave us a chance to play at the Millenium Stadium, and anyone who was there in the Brentford monsoon on the journey to the final will never forget it. What an evening that was.

There's no point devaluing this competition further, especially not with the danger of it being a 'slippery slope'.

No. Fuck off. Just fuck off.
Why don't the Premiershite wankers just fuck off.
If this cunty plan actually happens it'll only be a matter of time before we see the introduction of B teams into league 2.
That's it, it's the thin end of the wedge situation.

I do have to admit I didn't go to Cardiff for the Blackpool game as I had to work that day plus I was going through a period of teenage disinterest with the U's at that time. In hindsight if wish I'd gone but ho hum, at least I was there for the dark days of relegation. ;-)

I just can't get excited for it to be honest. Another thing I struggle with is the league cup seeding - great so we avoid having a chance of getting through to maybe get MK Dons. Marvellous. :-)

It's very much a compromise, and it's certainly better than them invading the leagues. I'm not a fan of the JPT and would happily see it scrapped but the whole group stage element etc makes it a bit more interesting to me if nothing else.

Why does there have to be any compromise? It's the thin end of the wedge, and quite a thick thin end at that.

Then they're punishing their own clubs.

When we used to enter the FA Trophy, every home game used to COST us money. We haven't had many more turning up for JPT games, but surely every little helps, especially in the lower leagues.

I don't agree with what the Premier League want to do, but this is not the answer.

Could not disagree more. This attitude will only ever lead to exploitation.

the Premier League: destroying domestic cups since 1992

i dont get what they will learn from playing one or two matches vs 3rd or 4th level teams per season.

i can see already Wengers reaction: Oh, Timmy Tinpot has scored a hat-trick for an fully superior side at home vs Barnet. i will start him for 100% next weekend vs Tottenham. cant go wrong.

Am I the only one who thinks the U21 teams would just be destroyed against a lot of full-strength L1 and L2 sides?

Friendlies where teams allow the yoof teams to play their football are very, very different circumstances.

I'd like to see teams boycott the competition and play their own youth teams at that point to be honest. It's the Football League Trophy for starters.

Genuinely, I think this is a pretty rubbish idea. As has already been addressed by numerous people in the thread, this doesn't solve young English players not getting enough seriously competitive game time, and even if it did, I don't think that City's youth are going to benefit from playing at Accrington and Morecambe sporadically every season or so. The real issue is quite clearly the stockpiling of young players by English clubs - if there's a rule in place to prevent that - then this is not required.

We've faced West Ham's youth a number of times over the years, and by and large we've pole-axed them most times, albeit these were pre-season games. Furthermore this won't attract any sort of crowds to the home or away games. Do I want to watch us play Arsenal's kids on a Tuesday night? No. Do Arsenal fans want to watch us play their kids at Boreham Wood? A few maybe, but not bloody many. (This is irrelevant because we'll be playing Boreham Wood for real next season, but you get my point).

It's essentially a half arsed compromise to the B team bollocks last year, and one that I imagine if Football League clubs don't accept, they'll get blackmailed via a withdrawl of central funding or something like that. That's how EPPP got through anyway and we all know what a total farce that fucking is.

The pre season before we won the conference we beat Arsenal Under 21's 7-0, distinctly recall Jake Howells ripping Bellerin a new one.

Absolutely right that this is a nonsense idea as it stands, for all the reasons you say. So down the line they'll come back to the 'B' teams idea, but this time having established the precedent that they can play competitive matches against league clubs.
