Bbc one and bbc two mirroring each other and cancelling all programmes was a poor decision. Especially when you consider they already have a news channel. That’s 3 channels showing the same thing. Bbc four cancelled programming (including a friendly between England ladies and France) and ran a banner telling people to watch Bbc one, bizarrely CBBC did the same, telling children to watch the news.

Whilst I have huge respect for the royal family I found it distasteful, especially in a year where we’re lost over 125,000 people.

I don’t really mind the fixtures being moved around a bit, pretty much been used to it this season anyway.
I think you will find it is a condition of their license. Which is why they were so keen to set up a complaints page on Friday, I think they are unhappy about it too.

It didn’t happen when the Queen Mother died, so I highly doubt it is.

I have it on good authority. The license has been changed since she died

Ha, didn't think I would be the only Cotswold republican, unless Si Robin counts too. Sad for the family of course and I'm not one for pissing on graves but 99 is a good innings so hard to feel much of anything as an outsider. He was a bit of a twat as well by all accounts, despite the war service, saw some quote from a visit to Paraguay in the 60s where he told the dictator it was nice to be in a country where the people weren't in control. Obviously he liked to make a crack but a surprising amount of them were racist so can't imagine I'd have enjoyed sharing a pint :D

No one should be forced to watch anything, just not sure how anyone can argue that the royals are no more important to this country then anyone else. Like it or not they are a massive part of our identity as a nation.

The Queen is one of the most famous and respected people on Earth. That has to be good for our country surely?
I don’t think anyone in our country is more important than anyone else, be it the poor man sleeping in a cardboard box or the queen. I don’t see how that is hard to understand? It blows my mind that some people believe that someone born into royalty is suddenly classed as more important than others.

I don’t argue with any of the points surrounding history and tradition, it’s an institution which helps to give the UK its identity. I have no problem with anyone else grieving or watching his funeral, or even for things moving. But it does nothing for me, I’m sorry for him and his family but that’s it. Please let’s not class some people as more important than others, that’s horrible.

Isn't that just life? If not why do I never get VIP treatment, roped off areas, a police escort etc when I go out.

Because money talks. But money shouldn’t define importance.

HRH the DoE served this country brilliantly both in the navy and then as a cornerstone of the royal family and massive support to his wife. Was involved in a lot of good causes and sports as well.

The UK is lucky to have such a great institution representing it around the world, most countries envy it and makes you proud to be British. All games should be off next Saturday I reckon.
Love how everyone's forgotten all the racist shite he spouted. Quite fitting that he's being honoured by changing the football schedule. Looking forward to players taking the knee afront the gallant backdrop of the giant skeletal face of a man who once said to a group of British school kids visiting China "if you stay here much longer, you’ll all be slitty-eyed."

Regarding this whole notion of a great institution representing us, the only thing that's impressive about it is, is that it's probably the best marketing campaign the world has ever seen. Perhaps if we were a more progressive nation and had made inroads into more modern industries than we have, we wouldn't feel the need to push this antiquated agenda onto the rest of the world.

It'll be worse when the Queen dies chaps. They'll call all the footy off for the weekend.

But no one has forgotten though have they. Just about every gaffe Phil the Greek ever made has been published in the MSM over the last few days.

Yes, under this jovial "gaffe" pretense. It's kind of fucked up. He was a racist. Perhaps forgotten was poor phrasing. Brushed under the carpet is probably right.

I’m imagining that scene from Clockwork Orange except the footage will last a fortnight and they’ll nail everyone’s front door shut.

Our game at Crawley has been moved to Friday night to avoid clashing the funeral, 6.30pm kickoff. Gives us an extra day's rest before next Tuesday's game, and Crawley have less rest after they play tomorrow. I'll take that.

Proper peasant mentality this. Sorry but it is.
From a family point of view it's sad that he died, but our interests are in no way aligned and for that reason I don't care at all what they are up to.

Royalty as an institution is just the descendants of some warlord being honoured by posterity and custom, we'd do better to remember we're the country of Tom Paine:
We have heard the Rights of Man called a levelling system; but the only system to which the word levelling is truly applicable, is the hereditary monarchical system. It is a system of mental levelling. It indiscriminately admits every species of character to the same authority. Vice and virtue, ignorance and wisdom, in short, every quality, good or bad, is put on the same level. Kings succeed each other, not as rationals, but as animals. It signifies not what their mental or moral characters are. Can we then be surprised at the abject state of the human mind in monarchical countries, when the government itself is formed on such an abject levelling system?—It has no fixed character. To-day it is one thing; to-morrow it is something else. It changes with the temper of every succeeding individual, and is subject to all the varieties of each. It is government through the medium of passions and accidents. It appears under all the various characters of childhood, decrepitude, dotage, a thing at nurse, in leading-strings, or in crutches. It reverses the wholesome order of nature. It occasionally puts children over men, and the conceits of non-age over wisdom and experience. In short, we cannot conceive a more ridiculous figure of government, than hereditary succession, in all its cases, presents.
