Just looking at the fixtures this weekend.

If Millwall lose or draw with Fulham, Derby v Boro ends in a draw, and PNE Brentford Sheff UTD and Bristol all win there games which on paper look winnable, there will be 2 points separating the 7 teams in the race for the play offs!

A lot of ifs and buts but those results are quite realistic!

But like my sure-thing six team coupon every week, probably won’t happen. I reckon the results this weekend will largely look like that, but a couple of sides won’t do what you expect them to do. Derby or Boro will win and possibly Brentford will slip up in the West London derby where things never go to script

Can't be assed looking into these various scenarios, we need to win each game as it comes along and then hope teams above us slip up. I still think a top 6 finish is unlikely for us due to poor goal difference and the fact that we have to rely on other teams collapsing.

We're not going to win all three games.

Win all 3 I'd be very surprised if we didn't finish in the top 6.

I think it will be Milwall 6th and Boro 5th for what it' worth.

Be very surprised if we can better results of those around us over the next couple of weeks.

I'd probably have written us off completely but I'll be at Boro and Cardiff at home this week so I've got to gather some interest and hope. Do or die time.

Massive game for Millwall tonight, win that and it's not looking like anyone can dislodge them.

Update 4

5th) Middlesbrough - 72
Forest (H) WON
Sheffield Utd (A) LOST
Bristol C (H) WON
Derby (A) WON
Millwall (H)
Ipswich (A)
Initial verdict: Having Pulis at the helm is a big advantage. Some huge games there against fellow chasers will decide their fate. Might just squeeze in.
Update: Massive games to come. Think they’ll do enough.
Update 2: Big chance to put distance between themselves and the chasing pack but been dragged right back into the mix now. I think they'll bounce back though.
Update 3: Very important to bounce back today. Next 2 games against the teams they're in direct competition with. 1 win at least will give them a shot on the final day.
Update 4: Nearly there now. One more win should do it and even a loss to Millwall is followed up by a fairly kind final day fixture. Should finish 5th.

6th) Millwall - 69
Bristol City (H) WON
Bolton (A) WON
Sheff Utd (A) DREW
Fulham (H) LOSE
Boro (A)
Villa (H)
Initial verdict: Tough looking run in. Come into form at the right time though. I think they may just miss out.
Update: Flying. Can they keep winning? Still going for 7th/8th.
Update 2: Yes they can. 4 tough games to come but why not. They have the momentum!
Update 3: Excellent draw today. They have momentum going into the Fulham match, especially since Brentford could have knocked their spirit. Last 3 games as big a test as they'll have though.
Update 4: So hard to call. You'd possibly fancy them against a Villa who will have nothing to play for. Boro away is very tough. Would 72 be enough? Going down to the final day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7th) Derby - 68
Bolton (H) WON
Wolves (A) LOST
Burton (A) LOST
Boro (H) LOST
Cardiff (H)
Villa (A)
Barnsley (H)
Initial verdict: Stinker of a run in against sides who all have something to play for. I think they might miss out.
Update 1: Important win. Will come under pressure still during the run in. Still think they could miss out.
Update 2: Night off although will get beaten by Wolves tomorrow (humble pie at the ready). Still in their hands but can they handle the pressure?
Update 3: No humble pie and a big bottle job today. One saving grace is Boro and Millwall play each other but there's a big chasing pack behind ready to take advantage. I think they're in big trouble now. Have to beat Boro or else I think they're done.
Update 4: They're gone. I think they'll lose the next 2 and possibly win on the final day. 71 won't be enough though.

8th) Brentford - 68
Ipswich (H) WON
Forest (A) WON
Fulham (A) DREW
QPR (H) WON
Barnsley (A)
Hull (H)
Initial verdict: Not a bad run in on paper. Kept their hopes alive with a win over Bristol City. Will have to go on a run to get in as they'll 5 points and teams behind 6th. I think it's just a bit much to make up.
Update: Going we’ll but still thinking they’ve left it too late. If they beat Fulham, I’ll reassess.
Update 2: Millwall's run has overshadowed them but they keep on winning. It's still all on that Fulham game though.
Update 3: That point against Fulham could be the point that gets Brentford in the play offs. A kind run in by comparison to some of their rivals who mostly dropped points today. Could be a final day gatecrash?
Update 4: Hit form at the right time. Two relatively kind final fixtures. I think they could well do it with 4 points.

9th) Preston - 67
Reading (A) LOSE
Leeds (H) WON
QPR (A) WON
Norwich (H) DREW
Sheff Utd (A)
Burton (H)
Initial verdict: On paper, one of the kindest run ins. Blown the last 2 games though which could have seen them in a play off spot. On the fence with this one as they'll need a run to have a chance. I'll take a punt and say I think they'll get in the top 6.
Update: Some kind games to come but going by fan reaction, maybe 10th/11th is a more sensible guess.
Update 2: Stopped the rot although I think 5 points and 5 teams adrift may be too much now. Need to win every game and see what happens
Update 3: On a day of draws, took advantage of their kinder looking run in to close the gap. Sheffield Utd will be their key game. No reason they can't win the two home games. Can't afford a loss to Sheff Utd. Maybe wrote them off to early.
Update 4: Every time they get a bit of momentum, they just can't quite push on. Looks like being a near miss for them. Only 2 wins possibly gets them in now.

10th) Bristol City - 66
Millwall (A) LOSE
Birmingham (H) WON
Boro (A) LOSE
Hull (H) DREW
Forest (A)
Sheffield Utd (H)
Initial verdict: Momentum from earlier in the season has gone. Some tough looking away games in there. I think they'll fade to 9th/10th.
Update: Still fancying then to fade out of contention.
Update 2: Probably their easiest game on paper but they won it and they're still in touch. Need something against Boro next game or else they'll fade away.
Update 3: I think they're out of it now. Indifferent form and needing to win all their last 3.
Update 4: Form is too inconsistent. Need 2 wins to have any chance. Can't see it now.

11th) Sheffield Utd - 66
Barnsley (A) LOSE
Middlesbrough (H) WON
Millwall (H) DREW
Birmingham (A) LOSE
Preston (H)
Bristol City (A)
Initial verdict: Crucially have most of the big games against other hopefuls at home. Still ticking along although drawing a few too many. I think they'll be either 6th or 7th. Maybe just falling short.
Update: Must get at least 4 from the next 2 or I think they’re out of it.
Update 2: Huge win followed by an even bigger next match. Beat Millwall and they'll be right back in it. Going to be a close end for them I think.
Update 3: A solid draw but a win would have put them right in contention. As it is, they ideally need to take at least 7 from their last 3 to have any realistic chance. May be a bit too much now.
Update 4: Form has gone inconsistent at the wrong time. Need to win both for any chance. Inferior goal difference makes them look the big outsiders now.

Update 4 table prediction

5th) Middlesbrough
6th) Brentford
-------------------------------
7th) Millwall
8th) Derby
9th) Preston
10th) Sheffield Utd
11th) Bristol City

I think we’ll need to beat Boro now. Five points might have been enough, but four won’t. Win both our games and we’ll do it, but that’s a big ask. I can see us getting done at the riverside chasing the game late on. A great effort though. We should hit 70 points, which is a fantastic haul for a promoted side. Probably the best points total for a couple of decades for a side who only got promoted through the play offs.

Still totally unknown, SU and BC remain possible whilst none of the others can get their act together.
Brentfords to throw away along with Boro though I would imagine. And let's be honest, Brentford are the best team out of the lot and I wouldn't begrudge them.

No pressure on us - after the terrible start to the season we had, no one expected we would get near the play offs. Barnsley and Hull aren't easy games for us, especially as Barnsley are fighting for their lives, and Hull have just scored 5 goals, wouldn't surprise me if we only got 1 point out of those two games. If we beat Barnsley though I can't see us slipping up with a home game on the final day.

'Race' isn't the word I would use.

Slog between a bunch of fucking retards more like.

The fact we could go 6th tomorrow with a draw is fucking outrageous. Been one of the worst teams in the league for about 4 months now.

Yes, mate.

I add that after the defeat with Millwall it was unthinkable to get here.

at this point, however, it would be nice to play until the last minute of the last day.

Barnsley is a very difficult match, but .. Come on Brentford .. Come on Brentford .. COME ON BRENTFORD !!

7th) Preston - 70
Reading (A) LOSE
Leeds (H) WON

OUT OF THE RACE

8th) Millwall - 69
Bristol City (H) WON
Bolton (A) WON
Sheff Utd (A) DREW
Fulham (H) LOSE
Boro (A) LOSE
Villa (H)
Initial verdict: Tough looking run in. Come into form at the right time though. I think they may just miss out.

Fulham (A) DREW
QPR (H) WON
Barnsley (A) LOSE

Update 4.5: Probably need 6 points now but are very capable. Goal difference could be crucial so need to win both well.
Update 5: Blew it at the last! Really fancied them to bomb on into 6th following the Fulham draw but that loss to Barnsley ensures that it was just a little too much to make up.

10th) Bristol City - 67
Millwall (A) LOSE
Birmingham (H) WON
Boro (A) LOSE
Hull (H) DREW
Forest (A) DREW

Update 5: Not a big surprise as they've been heading in one direction for a while. Run out of steam after a long season.

11th) Sheffield Utd - 66
Barnsley (A) LOSE
Middlesbrough (H) WON
Millwall (H) DREW
Birmingham (A) LOSE
Preston (H) LOSE
Update 4.5: Have to win both matches to have any chance. Even that might not be enough.
Update 5: Poor 2nd half of the season. No surprise they're lagging at the end of this thread.

Update 5 table prediction

5th) Middlesbrough
6th) Derby
-------------------------------
7th) Preston
8th) Brentford
9th) Millwall
10th) Bristol City
11th) Sheffield Utd

at this point we should ask ourselves .. among the teams that can play the playoffs (Cardiff or Fulham, Aston Villa, Boro, Derby or Preston) who has more chances to be promoted?

Can't see Villa being beaten over 2 legs, too solid but Preston might be able to do them in a one off battle at Wembley

I hope Villa ease through the semis, so we can see lots of this at Wembley

If (IF) we got 6th, then I wouldn't have minded Villa.

Outplayed them at Villa park and ended up with a point because of a dodgy penalty, can't gauge anything from the Deepdale game as our only available centre back was Andy Boyle who has since been shipped out to Doncaster. Pearson spent the entire game covering for them.

Wouldn't fancy us against Fulham over 2 legs but we've already beaten Cardiff twice, our system counters theirs perfectly and I think Warnock would be forced to tweak his tactics, which could also play into our hands.

Still can't see Derby losing at home to Barnsley though, so pretty irrelevant.

We won’t beat Barnsley, because we’re Derby. The question is... will Preston beat Burton, or will we get lucky?

Hope so, as I’d love to see Burton pull off the great escape!

You don’t need to beat them, you only need a point.
