Was getting told that last week a dog was bitten by an adder in the grassy area at the side of the canal towpath a couple of miles along from my gaff Put the fear of God into me as we tend a garden area....some flowers but mainly bushes..... to the side of the towpath just outside our garden boundary. Will we be safe?....I honestly don't know if they would venture into there

No adders down in the fens, you've got to get up into Norfolk or Suffolk on the Brecks for the nearest. Our grass snakes like the supply of mice and voles in the compost heap and frogs in the pond.

I can't imagine that an adder would do more than give you a major fright if it should venture into your garden in search of dinner - and even that would be unlikely. It would only bite if you were daft enough to pick it up or corner it. They tend not to be garden creatures anyway.
