Last season (2013/2014) was very good for a Spireite, but I loved 1994-95. To be honest some of the football wasn't that great, but i was 19/20 and at Uni, with loads of free time, spare cash and an overbearing interest in beer, women and football.
We bobbled around in mid table for the first half of the season before turning up at Feel Ill on Boxing Day to play Mansfield. At half time we found ourselves 2 nowt down having played like a bunch of frightened pensioners. Cue a major player revolt at half time where they told manager John Duncan where he could insert his 'legendary' negative tactics. As a result we come out for the second half fired up and attacking, and quickly make it 2-2 before going on to lose, but the supporters were heartened by a much better showing in the second half. The team then embarked on a colossal, club record 23 game unbeaten run, featuring some classic away games (and weekenders!) at Walsall, Donny and Darlo amongst others as the momentum grew and grew.
The run eventually ended in the penultimate game of the season, at home to eventual champions Carlisle, which meant we were beaten to the autos by Walsall, who were one of the four outstanding teams that season, with ourselves & Bury being the others.
Player wise it was a proper mixed bag -workmanlike but not flashy. A young Kevin Davies emerged. For a young lad playing mainly out on the wing it was apparent how hard it was to knock him off the ball even back then. We had an excellent box to box midfielder in Phil Robinson, and an effective striker in Tony Lormor, but the defence was brilliant with four quality centre backs in Sean Dyche, Darren Carr, Nicky Law & Lawrie Madden.
Eventually we were promoted via the play offs, disposing of the Stags over two legs before beating Bury 2-0 at Wembley.
