I agree with this as well. Both against Olympiakos and in Istanbul, where obviously his goals and general performance played a huge part, there was still time and football to be played. But in that 2006 final, there was no time, the game was over. It sums up his glory days for us perfectly as well; when Gerrard was on the pitch, we could always be bailed out.

Personally, I'll always remember the hattrick at Newcastle when we won 5-1, boxing day 2008 I think it was. He was playing the best football of his life and for what can only be considered an exception in hindsight, he was surrounded by quality players. He was devastating that season, but honestly it was the last season he was inarguably world class.

As for bailouts, you can't do him fairness even if you try to list them. Portsmouth, Bolton are two I remember very fondly; especially Bolton:
