Our squad now stands as

Goalkeepers
Mike Cooper

Defenders
Tafari Moore
Joe Riley
Scott Wottoon
Niall Canavan
Ashley Smith-Brown
Gary Sawyer

Midfielders
Antoni Sarcevic
Tom Purrington (Youth)
Adam Randell (Youth)
Conor Grant
Joel Grant

Attackers
Freddie Ladapo
Ryan Taylor
Calum Dyson
Alex Fletcher

Clearly a lot of work to do. Ideally I would like to shift Tafari Moore, Calum Dyson, and Scott Wottoon. Expect we'll sell Ladapo for 500k plus too.
Of these I suspect only Scarce, Grant, and maybe Canavan and Taylor are anywhere near starters.

After signing 3 strikers we're looking at something like this:

GK: James McKeown
LB: Sebastian Ring
CB: Ludvig Ohman
CB: Harry Davis
RB: Luke Hendrie
CM: Harry Clifton
CM: Jake Hessenthaler
CAM: Elliott Whitehouse
LW: Moses Ogbu
RW: Charles Vernam
ST: James Hanson

Subs: S.Russell, M.Pollock, J.Curran, J.Cook, M.Green, A.Rose, H.Cardwell

On paper that's got potential to be a decent side in this league. If we can manage to sign Meyler and Embleton and squeeze in a good quality defender, I'd actually be quite confident of us making some noise this season. Still lots of ifs and buts to go though.

Matt Green will be starting.

And a keeper.

Club is overestimating Jaaskalainen’s development and Richards’ ability.

After a few arrivals and departures I think we have a better idea of what the team might look like, this might change a little in the next few days and me posting this will probably mean we bring in a couple of players today. My starting line up would probably look something like this:

GK: Adam Smith

LB: Joe Mills
CB: Faz Rawson
CB: Nathan McKinley
RB: Liam Shepherd

LM: Junior Mondal
CM: Ebou Adams
CM: Carl Winchester
RM: Paul Digby

CF: Shawn McCoulsky
CF: Aaron Collins/George Williams

Subs:

GK: James Montgomery
DF: Udoka Godwin-Malife
DF: Matt Mills
MF: Lloyd James
MF: James Morton
FW: George Williams/Aaron Collins
FW: Dayle Grubb

That line up can move easily from 442 to 433 or 352. I think the defence pretty much picks itself, midfield is a bit more contentious, but it is with the forwards it is really hard as there is so little experience. I would expect Cooper to experiment a bit at the start of the season to try and find a forward pairing that works well together, I just hope the fans are patient if he doesn't get it right from the off. That line up only leaves three squad members who don't feature and I expect them to go out on loan.

Can't see us playing a flat 4-4-2 tbh. Will either be a 3-5-2, 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.

Whatever formation we play the width will come from our full backs, Cooper doesn't use out and our wingers he prefers a few no. 10's playing behind a striker. Either that or 2 false 9's in a 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 diamond.

I think the diamond is the most likely formation, with Adams playing in front of the defence, as Brown did at the start of last season, but agree that a flat four in midfield is pretty unlikely. If we play with wing-backs then it could end up looking a bit 343 at times with Mondal or possibly Grubb playing further forward. I think what it boils down to is that there is a fair degree of flexibility with our squad, plenty of pace, and lots of room to change formation during games. The squad may be a bit light on numbers but the quality is high throughout, I would like another decent midfielder if possible, but I'm definitely looking forward to next season already.

How did Lloyd James do over the whole season, FGR fans?

He really wasn’t liked here but wondered if a change of scene brought the best out of him?

Good first half of the season, went off the boil a bit after January. Keeps things simple and ticking over in the middle, bit like a league 2 Xavi, which suits our possession style although he could do with moving it a bit quicker at times. Took a lot of set-pieces as well but a bit hit and miss with those to say the least.

Overall I'd say although not everyone's cup of tea, he's been a pretty good signing and added vital experience to a young squad, which is set to be even younger this year.

The comment about the age of the squad is spot-on. By my reckoning we have five forwards on the books, with an average age of something like 22. We have two players aged over 30, Lloyd James and Matt Mills, most of the rest of the squad is mid-20's or younger...ten are aged under 23.

At this rate we could pretty much put out a close to full strength first xi that would all be eligible for the deveopment league.

Is Cooper actually going to sign anymore players of proven quality?

Have you heard any rumours mate? I am actually a bit worried with recruitment this close season, expected the departures but expected far more proven replacements tbh.

Our updated squad assuming we are going 4-
3-3

Scott Brown

James Gibbons
Leon Legge
Nathan Smith
Adam Crookes

Tom Conlon
Emmanuel Oyeleke
Luke Joyce

David Worrall
Tom Pope
Mark Cullen

Probably our main first XI

Askey is looking now to sign:

Winger
Keeper
Right Back

And replacing Ben Whitfield and Connell Rawlinson if we can offload, then we will be done I think.

Still think we need an attacking midfielder myself. A lot of reliance on Manny Oyeleke being fit as box to box, he is outstanding when fit but had a bad season last year with injuries so need better luck there as it stands!

Not a lot tbh, heard Kevin Dawson mentioned a while back.

Budgets been cut so going to be tough to get many proven replacements. Might have some more joy in a months time when players still without a club lower their demands I reckon.

Why has the budget been cut? Seems strange when Vince states he wants to get to the Championship!!

I believe you by the way.

Dunno, could be FFP or the stadium stuff.

Vince has said Championship won't happen without new stadium anyway, so maybe from his pov it's a case of waiting for the appeal.

I wanna see us being more sustainable anyway, teams like Accrington have done it on a small budget, so it's possible. Just need to be clever in the market.

Not done ours yet, now that we know who's come and gone more or less. I'd expect us to keep our 5-3-2:

GK: Dean Brill

RWB: James Brophy
CB: Marvin Ekpiteta
CB: Josh Coulson
CB: Danny Happe
LWB: Joe Widdowson

CM: Craig Clay
CM: Jobi McAnuff

CAM: Jordan Maguire-Drew

ST: Conor Wilkinson
ST: Matt Harrold

Subs:
Sam Sargeant
Sam Ling/Myles Judd
Jamie Turley
Josh Wright
James Dayton
**New Striker**
**New Striker**

Basically need 2 new stikers, one central midfielder and a winger to complete the squad.

All the other players we have are youngsters in their first year pro deals.

Doubt McAnuff starts ahead of Wright, and Turley or Sam Ling will play at RWB, I reckon. If we start the season with Matt Harrold as a first choice striker, we’ll get relegated.

Our squad numbers have been confirmed so here's a look at our squad as a whole:

01: James McKEOWN
02: Luke HENDRIE
03:
04: Harry DAVIS
05: Ludvig ÖHMAN
06:
07: Matt GREEN
08: Jake HESSENTHALER
09: James HANSON
10: Elliott WHITEHOUSE
11: Jordan COOK
12:
13: Ollie BATTERSBY
14: Ahkeem ROSE
15: Harry CLIFTON
16:
17: Harry CARDWELL
18: Charles VERNAM
19: Max WRIGHT
20:
21: Sebastian RING
22: Elliott HEWITT
23: Sam RUSSELL
24: Jock CURRAN
25: Mattie POLLOCK
26: Brandon BUCKLEY
TBC: Moses OGBU

Looks like we're still open for a new LB and CB, latter rumoured to be Omar Sowumni from Yeovil.

Better looking squad than last year with a decent chunk of youth thrown in. Really like how Jolley is bridging the gap between the academy and the first team; Clifton became one of the first names on the team sheet, Rose was a match winner against Crawley and Wright got rave reviews at Boston and will likely be big part of the squad this season. Will be interesting to see if the next lot of kids can progress as much.

We still need an Embleton type along with the defenders mentioned to really round out the squad. I'd like the think we could be a dark horse but a lot will depend on if the likes of Ohman, Ring and Ogbu can settle quickly and play at their best. We don't know what their proper level is just yet.

Well that's interesting to know Chris. You have to say there have been a few strange comings and goings, all of which appear to point to a scaling back compared to last season. (including losing two highly rated coaches).

Looking back at last season now, you could now say we were going for it! Where this season is definitely something different. Unless we have uncovered a few gems, we'll be mid table this season so long as the few older heads we have stay on board! I'd take that if we can reverse the habit of winning away rather than at home!

I can see JMD up front with Wilkinson.
Maybe Jobi in behind but not sure if id be happy with that.
Can also see Happe leaving unfortunately.

Very bored. Reassuring that we could field a starting 11 and bench if the season started tomorrow. Front 3 positions especially are expected to change.

We need a couple more defenders and I would prefer another first choice CB to replace Harry Davis. Remains to be seen if Seb Ring is good enough for League 2. Would also like a creative attacking midfielder to start, it was rumoured weeks ago that we could be signing another player from Sunderland or even Elliott Embleton could be returning. Other than that, I think we’re done.

Have never felt this deflated going into a new season.

We have fairly rubbish manager, but he is actually the least of our problems.

All of our decent players have either left or want to leave, hardly anyone wants to sign for us and even the players that do want to sign end up going elsewhere because our director of football is fucking useless.

Our friendlies start in a week and we hardly have any players.

We are staring relegation out of the football league in the face with this squad and the club are doing nothing about it. I’m wishing the season will end before its even started.

I assume the ‘one year contract policy’ is fucking you over?

Seems a bonkers thing to stipulate as only a small proportion of players would take a year’s deal, when they can get 2 years elsewhere. It’s even more crazy when you consider how far Carlisle is from anywhere. We have similar issues with location, so can only imagine how difficult things would be if we only offered one year deals.

It is bizarre. Especially for those with families. Uproot with the risk of having to do it all again in 12 months time.

Selection pool of players must be tiny. Probably find most players would go anywhere else in League 2 for an extra years security.
