Been a while since CTFC were in league one so what's the general consensus on the state of match officials in this league?

Have a look at the last goal penalty decision that John Busby gave for Peterborough against us in the final few league games.

Thats all you need to know.

They are probably a world away from the refs in the Euros we have seen.

Most of the Premier league ones are ..

I'd have thought most of the League One/Two refs are interchangeable.

I agree with K-win, I am pretty sure they are refs allocated to both leagues 1 and 2. The quality is therefore variable, and indeed the same ref can be great in one game and not so great in the next. I think one of the issues is that with VAR a lot of refs were moved up to that level, meaning a lot at our level are quite inexperienced and have probably been promoted from the NL a few years too soon. Or others are kept on beyond their sell by date.

As fans we might not always agree but being objective (and I am not during the 90 minutes) they do get the vast majority of decisions, such as fouls, correct. The bigger issue can be game management of the players, that takes time to learn and I am not sure they have been given the time. I never officiated at this level and above, but I knew quite a lot who did and about the quickest it took them to get to the FL from qualifying was twenty years. We had one at Home Park last year who was 26. If he had taken his test at the earliest age possible, 14, he would have had 12 years. Actually on the game I saw he was very good, but I doubt he has the experience to be that consistent every week.

My biggest bugbear is actually the linos. There are a few who are decent, but the vast majority struggle to keep up with play. In the past many of those running the middle in the PL would actually have served several more years on the line before they got to the middle of the PL. Thus the quality of the whole officiating team, ref and linos, would likely be higher.

The other factor which has quite an effect is that the training of new refs is now done primarily by the county Refs Associations who use it as a good cash cow. When I passed my test most of the training was done by local Refs Associations. These usually had regular meetings, speakers, training sessions and social activities. They acted like mini refereeing universities. A new ref would come into regular contact with more experienced refs, some they might have seen on TV, and learn a lot as a result. For example, it was very common for the equivalent of the NL and PL refs and linos to take out newer guys to run the line with them for friendlies and the like. Some of these associations exist but most don’t. The one my dad is Life President of folded in the last year. That link of passing on knowledge in a safe and supportive environment has now largely been broken.

They are, you get same ones in league one and two most of the time, you occasionally get a championship ref for the big games.

Yeah - continue to enjoy the Trevor Kettle one-man-show, Ten Boner, Darren Dreadful and the usual game spoiling gang.
