There's a rumour knocking about up here that you've approached Fergie, I can drive him down no problem.

No nay never. He's not a popular figure in Northampton due to his Peterborough connections, and of course the wife beating.

Steve Cotterill and Gary Bowyer continue to be strongly linked

Robert Page has gone to evens on the betting and we all know bookies are never wrong!

Wouldn't lose much sleep if he goes, although would be a very strange move. Oddly our chairman has started following Nigel Atkins on twitter this weekend so you never know.

I'd swap Rob Page for Nigel Adkins in a heartbeat. Never going to happen though, would be a strange move.

Rob Page is building something good at Vale, improving things slowly (too slowly for his critics it would seem). I'm not surprised he's attracting attention because anyone in the game who knows what they're on about can see the great job he's doing with us. Can't see Northampton being the most attractive option for him though (no offence intended), as it would certainly be a step in the wrong direction for an ambitious young manager.

I think Rob Page could be a decent appointment for Northampton to be fair, I dont' understand why Port Vale fans haven't taken to him he's done quite a good job considering the budget he has there. They've not been a million miles off challenging for the play offs this season, maybe at Northampton with a bit of a larger budget he could do very well.

What sort of football does he play, or does he like his teams to play?

He has had a very good budget the past two years, just blew it on having 8000 midfielders when we needed a striker. Don't know Northamptons budget but he has had 1.7 million last season and similar this which for this level is decent enough.

His philosophy seems to be to avoid defeat at all costs rather than try win matches, especially away from home. Which meant we had several matches last season where we failed to manage a single effort on target. That is why I'll be delighted if he joins you, the entertainment level in watching Vale this season was very low.

That makes me think there's nothing in the rumours then

Attacking at home, dire negative 1-0 defeats away from home with no plan B.
Beaten by the name at places like Sheff Utd before a ball is kicked. Numerous 1-0 defeats with goals from 65th minute onwards and then no clue how to change the game.
Divides the fans as Pulis did at Stoke. Personally i can,t stand the bloke, when he came out last pre-season and was asked on radio his ambitions, ' to finish above last years 18th ' . Wow fantastic ambition.
Please god the bookies be right although the new manager would be left with a squad containing Pages' geriatric yes men.

I wouldn't be unhappy if Page left either. Apart from a few games when Andoh was fit, the football wasn't very watchable.

I have to say, I'm surprised with some of the names mentioned in this thread and I don't mean that in a nasty way either. Family club, much like Walsall, Orient, Scunthorpe etc - small crowds for this level, no rich foreign owners, much room for growth/expansion without a rich owner? - This is their natural level and after the current momentum runs out, I expect them to return to the mid>bottom half of League 1, much like us (I don't mean any of this offensively).. the likes of Cotterill etc, have just managed Bristol City and so on, with multi-million pound budgets and 15,000 gates.

Someone like Rob Page, Ardley, a Premier League youth manager etc - is about right I would have thought. I may be totally wrong, but I'd expect Cotterill, Adkins etc to turn their nose up at this job.

No one has a clue who is gonna be appointed, or who we've even spoken to. But still, an appointment is expected by the end of the week!

To be fair Atkins may need to drop to re-build his career to someone lower League One (size wise) after his disastrous year with the Blades.

There is literally no rumours from fans supposedly ITK about who we are talking to etc. It's a pretty odd situation as under our old chairman, everyone knew everything before it was close to being announced - that was half his problem though!

The only thing we have to go by is the bookies names and the odd random story appearing on Twitter about Gary Bowyer, Robert Page etc.

Suspect it will be a name that hasn't been mentioned anywhere.

I'm with many Vale fans on here. I've never been much for the guy, very negative away from home with the defend not attack mentality. Home better football but i wouldn't care if he went.

Aye, as I said - I didn't mean it offensively. But traditionally, Northampton are about at their level now. What are your expectations for next season?

Do you have anyone internal that might be worth a shout? Obviously it didn't work at Colchester, but a few other clubs have gone down that path.

Smith worked well (predominantly) for us and didn't cost us much.

With Wilder I was hopeful we'd be top half, now I've recalibrated to accepting a mid table finish as a good season.

Our assistant went with Wilder, a youth coach was pinched by the FA a few months ago, and there's a top quality youth coach we've got at the minute but who knows if he would want the top job.

Couple of wildcards on our shortlist apparently anyway

Robert Page is now the clear favourite according to the bookies.
