I don't think anyone can argue with the decision to deduct the 3 points, however there must be a consistent punishment for all: essentially the game should become "forfeited" and the opposition awarded the game 3-0, or the original result, whichever is higher. In cup competitions, teams are automatically expelled from the competition.

I don't understand why in the last 18 months there have been a couple of instances where these 'guidelines' haven't been followed.

The same thing happened in a cup game this season with Chesterfield play MK Dons having one of our players play past the deadline, they had to replay the match.
