Good. We've got standing at Griffin Park, not "safe standing" just old fashioned terraces and we never have any problems. As long as they are kept to smaller sections and entry is properly controlled I see no reason why it can't be implemented anywhere.

Shouldn't even be a discussion.

Hated standing at football matches. Kicked, elbowed, toes trodden on, coat torn.

Your coat must have been of shoddy quality!
Standing on a terrace is much safer than standing up in a seated stand, that much is obvious.

It won't improve the atmospheres in this dead as fuck league. Most grounds I go to always have a section of supporters who stand in silence for 90 minutes.

I think proper terracing would massively improve the atmosphere in the premier league. Agree though that I don't really see how 'safe standing' (don't really like that term as it implies proper terracing isn't safe) would improve the atmosphere, especially as its likely to only be 1:1 as it as Celtic at the moment.

Man Utd are asking their supporters whether they'd be for safe standing if legalised.

my understanding is that at celtic park you lost 10 seats and gained 14 standing places. instead of the more traditional, fit as many people in the space as possible then throw a couple on top system of years gone by.

not the best link but go to How many people can you fit into a rail seating section in comparison to a conventional stand? section and you'll get the jist, it'll come down to regulations. So if we go 1 for 1, the only advantage is giving a dedicated standing area for certain fans, which might group noisy fans together? who knows. But i think a 1.5 increase in a certain stand who help. Make a 3000 seater section into a 4500 section if going to increase noise.

just in case anyone thought he was lying, some proof in the pudding

I disagree with this wholeheartedly. In Sweden, some teams have gone from terraces to full seaters quite recently and the correlation to the atmosphere is painfully obvious. It's a simple case of those who want to sing have to stand together and terracing helps that immensely.

It won't go back to the atmosphere seen before terracing was removed, the middle classification of football is quite irreversible by now. But to say it won't improve atmosphere at all is way off.

C'mon teams, sort it out and make this happen. If all those countries can do it, then why cant we?!

Because it needs a change in legislation which the government have said won't be changed. Other countries don't have this legislation, so I honestly can't see why the government would change their current stance (excuse the pun). Can't see this happening for many years if at all.

In the meantime more countries will adopt the safe standing model, I'm sure more Scottish teams will install it too.

To me there should be no debate about it. Any sot of modern terrace is safer than everyone standing up in a seated stand.

Like I said, every ground in the PL seems to have a section of supporters who stand despite the seats and it does fuck all to the atmosphere. St. Mary's is dead as fuck these days compared to League One and the Championship because a fair proportion of Premier League crowds these days pay to watch a Premier League game over watching a team play.

The problem with seats isn't that you can't stand, you quite obviously can. The problem is that you have an assigned spot, and singing obviously depends on those who want to sing being very closely together, rather than few and far between. Think of 20 vocal supporters in a 1000-man stand. Spread out they're nothing, right next to eachother it's something.

But I'm even unsure why I am arguing with you, the correlation between all seaters and lack of atmosphere is very, very obvious. I haven't heard anyone argue your line before to be perfectly honest.

But then again you're yet to prove that you don't work for Sky so maybe it's in your interest to play down the match going experience. I don't know you tell me.

Meh, I work for Sky and I'd lobby as hard as anyone to get terracing back. The day Brentford lose the terraces will be a sad day :(

I still struggle to understand your argument.

The majority of Stadiums standing sections will be full of season ticket holders and the atmospheres are still abysmal. The only way the atmosphere will improve around the ground is if you give football back to the local community.

FWIW I don't work for Sky...

Well let's agree to disagree.

And nobody has accused you for working for sky. Nobody. But smoke and fire and all that ...

I kind of get the point. Prior to us going all seater, all our singing fans gathered in the two terraces. Since they got replaced, all the fans got dispersed to different parts of the ground. Season tickets meant that you were designated your seat and not necessarily within a vociferous section. Therefore the atmosphere suffered.
To their credit, and after lengthy deliberation. Our board has allowed us to have an area designated for the more vocal fans to gather and replace their season ticket for a ticket in that stand. The downside to this is that it tends to end up all standing in a seated stand. This can't be safe. I'd hope they can find a way around this and introduce something similar to what they have in the Bundesliga.
Although I've always been of the opinion that it wasn't the terraces that were the safety issue. It was those bloody fences that kept everyone penned in like caged animals.

The guys over at The Anfield Wrap asking whether its time Liverpool FC took part in any preliminary discussions into safe standing. In the vid they ask a Celtic fan how the standing section has gone at Parkhead.

They could easily fit a few hundred more on that Ealing Rd end.
