How many L2 clubs are actually in consensual two way main rivalries? I'd say us (Scunny), Vale (Stoke), Chesterfield (Stags), Cheltenham (Gloucester), Swindon (Oxford) and Wimbledon and MK obviously...I don't really know about the North West lot tbh. So we're at 7 at present.

How about all the sad sack clubs that nobody else cares about all put their names into a hat and we pick them out and they get given a new Palace Brighton style rival?
Surely it's us and Boston instead of a regional semi-pro level club now...

Lincoln pretend they don't care about us but then they had the banner embarrassment a few years back that disproved that. And it is the world's first Town v City derby with both founder members of 2nd division and there were no other clubs with Town after the place name at the time. Lincoln were the second club with City after Stoke.

If John Prescott (RIP) hadn't put millions of taxpayer dollars into Hull's stadium it could still have been us and Hull if we were both slumming it in 100+ year old grounds - in the 1950's it certainly was.

So it turns out Crewe were talking absolute bollocks all along and there was never a cap on the amount of tickets they could have.

Ha ha ha! Couldn't write it, could you?

For me it's Grimsby and Scunny and nothing else. I don't associate anybody else with Lincoln and Hull are huge compared to Town.

From early 70s to 2000 you couldn't say that.

From the crowds they had in the 50s they always had the potential, but the new ground was the game changer. If they'd had to convert Boothferry to all seater, they be in the same sorry position as us with the ground. Low capacity, big building regs and maintenance liability.

And that's why you need a big modern stadium regardless of it's location. Be it the 1950s or 2000s with Kingston Upon Hull being so much bigger as a conurbation they always had and will have far bigger potential. As you rightly say fully realised when they built their shiny new stadium. Think of the potential growth in home crowds for Town in they were to do similar.

It really is a game or more accurately a club changer especially in this case.

Unfortunately we don't have the deputy prime minister as a local MP to direct £40 million of tax payer funds into the project, or a viable rugby league club to justify that as for a community stadium.

I'm confused Viking Magpie has been making it out to be easy to build a big new stadium for weeks, are you saying he is wrong?

Never said or made out it was easy, Gladders think instead really really important and beneficial :bg:

Interesting re. the cost. Obviously GTFC wouldn't require anywhere near the capacity of Hulls and probably not the facilities. If it ever did happen what capacity would be about right for Town. 12,000-15,000?

On the basis that clubs with new grounds have increased their crowds back to the level of the early 60s as a benchmark - then about 14k with 12k home 2k away. We could still get more than that for a really big one off cup / play-off game but that feels about right.

We always used to have a bit of beef with the Sheffield clubs but it's hilariously one sided because they genuinely couldn't give 2 hoots about us. Although did really hate losing to us. It's kind of faded away a bit now because it's a long while since we've played them.

I've always wondered about same city/town rivalries. Can they really exist, truly? These guys must work together, drink in the same boozers, even be brothers a lot of the time. Then for 2 hours every so often pretend to hate each others guts. Feels proper performative.
I do remember the Sheffield rivalry from my early days as a fan (I quite enjoyed the build a bonfire song). But back then there were a few Wednesday fans kicking about & they couldn’t have cared less about us.

I worked with a Wednesday fan once, he's a good mate of mine today actually, and tried to banter with him a bit about the rivalry and he just looked at me a bit politely confused. That's when I was like, ok this road is one way. I reckon if we played at the same level for any length of time though there might be something creep into it.

Surprised at that, it’s normally the other way round in Donny.
