'Sin bins' to be trialled by English FA from next season

The Football Association will trial 'sin bins' in the lower leagues of English football from next season.

The FA plans to introduce what it calls "temporary dismissals" in England's step seven - six tiers below the National League - and the leagues below.

They will only apply to yellow cards shown for dissent, and will see players leave the field for 10 minutes.

Can see this working. It's not so much a yellow card as a "sit yourself down and sort yourself out". It should, in theory, act as a deterrent for the knobheads constantly in the refs' faces. Some of the stuff I've seen this season has been ridiculous, and probably worthy of more than just a yellow.

This will go down the same route as giving peno's for pushing in the box...........1 ref will sin bin a few and the rest will not.

Waste of time imo if its not enforced across the board.

Also why is it always lower leagues that trial stuff? What are they saying to the lower leagues, it might be shit but no-one cares about your league anyway.

It will be like when they claimed to be 'clamping down' on dissent in the premier league before this season. Which basically resulted in booking easy targets (Costa mainly) for about the first 5 games and then gradually not bothering.

A ref did it to Liverpool and UEFA changed the rules.

People complained it actually gave the defending team an advantage having the balm moved nearer the goal..

And remember those penalties that were given at the start of the season for breathing on an opponent in the box, funny how they don't really get given anymore isn't it.

I would like to see it used for diving and play acting. Refs don't often use their cards for that, but might be more willing to act if there was a lesser punishment.

Not the whole sin-bin thing. That could work as a whole (i.e. every yellow card - sit out 5-10 mins), though it would massively change the dynamics of the game if every yellow card reduced you by a man temporarily, but to give it only for yellows for dissent is what is stupid IMO.

Power hungry refs will over use it, the more calm ones might apply it fairly, but those who are swayed by players will either fail to use it or fail to use it fairly.

It's especially problematic at that level - at step 6 we had a referee who played a 58 min first half (IIRC, our OS is too polite to mention the actual length) because he couldn't keep time for some reason. Don't forget there are also no fourth officials to help with timing etc. So a ref has to be completely on top of all of that as well as his normal tasks.

Clubs are clearly only signing up so they don't have to pay the booking fees (something that many clubs argue should be charged directly to the player, not the club).

In all fairness I feel for refs. I went to watch my lad a few weeks back on a Sunday and ended up reffing as the proper one never turned up.

I sent 1 off gave 3 penos and played 7 extra minutes and his team still lost 4-3.

Only just started talking to me again yesterday.

So, a team gets temporarily reduced to ten. They shut up shop. That'll be entertaining, won't it?

If they want to clamp down on dissent, make the bloody fines bigger. Make a dissent yellow card worth double the disciplinary value. Sin bins will not work in football.

Ofcourse refs can already dish out red and yellow cards for dissent but never seem to - even less so if there is a mass protest.

I am not sure how well the sun bin works in rugby but it's been the law for ages and some players still do show dissent (the England captain got sent off in a final) so they get used to it...and in reality the players are too busy throwing themselves at each other to worry about the ref..

Doesn't help the TV guts cut straight to the manager screaming at said officials and players doing the same.
