Sky tv affect on Tuesday attendances

Just done a quick back of fag packet calculation on how Sky tv has had on Tuesday night attendances compared to games on Saturdays.

I have used ‘home fans only’ for the calculations and clubs are consistently about 15% lower than Saturday’s attendance .

In effect for every 100 home supporters who turn up for a Saturday game only 85 turn up on average for a Tuesday night game.

This varies around the average with teams further north having about 90% while teams down south dropping below 80%.

Are these figures what folk would expect and are they similar to last season?

Is it that further north you go folk can’t afford Sky tv like Rishi.

I must point out there is one stand out exception and that was Stevenage who on Tuesday had 150 ‘home’ spectators for every usual 100 ‘home’ spectators, just because Wrexham were the visitors.

Cambridge average loss of home attendance on Tuesday v Saturday for the last few years has been 12%, unless it clashes with Champions League in which case it is nearer 18%.

Bolton haven't played a home midweek game yet but last season we had nine gates under 20,000 which included all six evening kick offs. Doesn't help where the ground is as it is a real effort to get to home games, even on a Saturday it's a trek.I remember driving to a home game against Southampton when it was a 8 o clock kick off when we were in the Premiership and I left on the final whistle (0-0 draw) and went straight home.
I arrived back at about 11.30 the next day. The traffic is terrible.

Ours have been an issue for years, last two seasons we’ve tried putting the tickets at £10 each, which helped for sure as our Tuesday crowds have improved since our owners took over in 2017, winning two leagues helps.

But this season we’ve had two Tuesday home games and managed around 3700 home fans for both. Ticketing for one was silly pricing and the other which was Tuesday was the standard prices.

We’ve lowered our rearranged game with Huddersfield back to £10.

The Sky+ thing won’t help Tuesday nights crowds, it will hinder them IMO even if we only charge a tenner.

Seems a problem across the divisions, we had 2000+ less Tuesday than our usual Saturdays (note we are one of very few clubs who count actual attendances not tickets sold which may give a clearer picture).

That’s a key point which means any analysis is not really that meaningful. GTFC also declare attendance not tickets sold, and we’ve had several Tuesday night attendances below the ST number since we came back into the EFL. I expect we have a lot of exile STHs who don’t make many Tuesday night games.

thats the problem so with most clubs going off tickets sold any comparison would be harder to tell as you'd only see the loss of the walk ups/away fans as STH would still count, for context Tuesday 1500+ ST holders didn't turn up!

Seems a problem but we've introduced a new season ticket for our remaining home games. Working out at £17 per match. Our chairman sh*t the bed before the season started with season ticket prices and match day prices. Away numbers are down . Burton and Lincoln . But that's league one for you.

Is it even just Sky+ though? I suspect clubs’ own streaming services don’t help the actual attendance either.

Personally I don’t live in Wycombe so it takes 6 hours out of any given day for me to get to and from the game plus the match itself - I can’t be arsed nowadays (though I was an STH for a while even taking that long for the trip).

So I use the club’s streaming service instead (plus the odd in-person game) - but then obviously the club doesn’t get other stuff like bar & food takings etc.

May want to compare Saturday 3pm kick offs with others. We will have had a maximum of 4 home league games at 3pm on Saturday before Christmas, with 8 games at other times.
It really is riling a lot of our fan base and will potentially affect season ticket sales in the future.

I think the weather over here will have had more of an impact on Tuesday night at Blackpool than Sky+.

Our early KO last week against Wigan didn't affect our home attendance, the full attendance was only down because of the away end (sell outs by Barnsley/Mansfield then 500 or so from Wigan).
