The Sect
Creepy horror from that Dario Argento bloke. 7.5/10. Maybe an 8.

I liked the Babadook. It wasn't particularly scary but it kept me hooked throughout.

As I'm off work following my op, I've been working through my horror collection. Watched Insidious 1 and 2 (will watch the 3rd when I'm more up to it).

Also, watched the Conjuring again which remains excellent and I've just watched Annabelle for the first time which was very underwhelming. The doll barely did anything in the entire film. It was ultimately just a prop for another demon movie. And I found the part of the black woman ridiculous as well.

Watched Untraceable last night. More of a thriller than a horror although it has horror themes. I quite liked it. An interesting view on society.

Going to work my way through Jessabelle (expecting an average film), Apartment 143 and Case 39 over the next few days.

I watched Gothica. Maybe light and not very scary, but I have a great fondness for this movie

Watched a couple of horrors tonight.

Halloween Kills
I really enjoyed it but think it goes overboard on the kill count. Doesn't really fit Michael's character imo. Better off lurking and picking off people like in the older films.

Bradford vs Hartlepool
Scariest shite I'll ever watch

The Lighthouse
Robert Pattinson knocks one out and smashes a seagull to death. Absolute shite. 4/10.

In the Mouth of Madness
Love this. It's mental and Sam Neil is always worth a watch when he's playing someone a bit crazy. 8/10.

Shang Chi
Was told this was one of the lesser Marvel films but I really enjoyed it. 8/10.

31
Typical Rob Zombie film. Bit of gore and not much else. 3/10.

I saw a good horror movie - maybe not ULTRA scary, but it kept the level.
Saint Maud - the biggest advantage of this movie is that it's not funny (and horror movies often are)

2024 has been pretty subpar for horror IMO.

I watched Imaginary the other night and thought it was alright.

Watched Late Night with the Devil. One of the best horror films of the last few years, I reckon. Enjoyed it very much.

That's on my list, good to hear it's got the Cas seal of approval. I've not seen that many good new ones in the last few years so if you've got any reccos then please list away. Barbarian and Talk to Me are probably my faves from 2022 onwards. Feels like there were loads of great films from 2010 until the last few years and it's died down a bit. Or I've just not been paying attention and I'm out of touch.

Sorry for the late reply mate - didn't see you'd posted. Thought I was on my own in here haha.

Struggling to recommend anything. The vast majority of horror films I've watched over the last year or so have been oldies. Definitely not out of touch tbh. There are a lot of solid 7/10 type movies. Decent to watch, but nothing amazing imo. One of the reasons why I've turned to foreign horror, mainly Japanese.

Imaginary and Immaculate are worth a watch if you haven't seen those - both from this year. Nosferatu is one I'm looking forward to. It's from Robert Eggers who did The Witch. Also looking forward to the new Alien film. There's also one I want to check out called In a Violent Nature. It's supposed to be really good and it's filmed from the killer's perspective.

No worries mate, will check those all out. Absolutely loved The Witch. Need to revist The Lighthouse though as I watched at the cinema after having a massive spliff and a bottle of wine as I didn't realise it was gonna be quite as wordy and left field as it was and I can't remember if it's any good or not. Still haven't watched The Northman yet either. And on the subject of directors that made an absolute horror banger and then have since gone on to do something a bit out there, I've still not seen Beau is Afraid.

I couldn't get into The Lighthouse. Went over my head a bit. I really like his other movies though and reckon Nosferatu will be great.

I haven't seen Beau is Afraid and I really liked Midsommar and Hereditary. Might have to give it a go at the weekend.

Hereditary is probably my fave film of the last decade or so of any genre not just horror, absolutely love it. Saw Midsommar at the cinema too and thought it was ace but I've watched it a few times since and while it is good, it almost lost a bit of its sheen with each watch whereas Hereditary is just wild each time I watch it. Not a film, but I'd put the second season of Mindhunter up there with Hereditary too.

More of a dark hard hitting drama than a horror/thriller too but if you've not watched Baby Reindeer yet, that's definitely worth it. Especially if you enjoyed Kathy Bates in Misery.

I binged Baby Reindeer when it came out. Bit mental, wasn't it? Not sure if I actually enjoyed it or not!

In a Violent Nature
Really, really slow. A couple of gory kills and nothing much else to get excited about. Solid 7/10.

Society
Watched this a few times and it's absolutely bonkers. 8.5/10

Hoping to see Long Legs soon. Heard good things.

It's decent imo. Couple of twists i'm surprised I missed tbh. Going to avoid saying much because spoilers. Nic Cage's character is good without being as scary as he was made out to be.

Just finished watching it. I definitely enjoyed it and I agree that Cage's character was good but not particularly scary. Think it's one of those films I might enjoy even more with a rewatch.

Speak No Evil
Incredibly slow and I found it to be pretty predictable. Not sure why it's so highly rated. 6/10.

The Curse of the Necklace
Another run-of-the-mill paranormal horror. 6/10.

Salem't Lot
Thought it was better than what the critics had been saying. Do love a vampire horror though. 7/10.

VHS Beyond
Similar to the previous films. Some good segments and some naff ones. 7/10.

Really enjoyed Salem’s Lot more than I expected I would. Very different from the 1979 version.

Speak No Evil was brilliantly acted but like Cas says all very predictable, yet to see the Dutch/Danish original might give that a go.

I like the concept of In A Violent Nature but didn't think it was great.

Longlegs is one I was very disappointed with overall. Could have been great but not nearly as good as all the praise it’s received in my opinion.

Apartment 7A - quite enjoyed this one but was a little slow and never great when you know what the ending is gonna be anyway.

Can’t wait for this.
