Dean Keates is definitely a name that has had a lot of airing on Shrimperzone and would of those that would go down well with the fanbase. The one question that has come up is would he be prepared to come south?

has played for P'Boro and Wycombe in the past, thats down that way somewhere aint it.

Nah, we love Super Jackie Lester but definitely not to the extent that you guys do. He is perhaps underrated by a fair amount of Town fans though, but that's because he had him in the early days of his career when he was a tenacious ankle biting penalty winning radge youngster who liked to get up in the faces of defenders twice his size. You got the post-Forest finished project Jack Lester who banged them in for fun at a level he was too good for because of how he'd matured at Forest.

Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening!

The recruitment process to find Southend United Football Club a new manager has completed primary interview stage.

I would like to thank every candidate for their time in meeting Gary Lockett, Ron Martin, Tom Lawrence and I on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, every candidate was thoroughly prepared with presentations worthy of the candidates and of our football club. Professional, insightful and solutions to address the situation we currently face and beyond.

After each interview session which started on Wednesday 9am-5pm, Thursday till 9pm and 8:30am until 5pm today, I have written up a considerations and comments document for the 3 non football men on the panel.

We agreed that candidates while involved in a live process shouldn't be encouraged officially to go to Roots Hall tomorrow, more speculation while the team and supporters are engaged in an important FA Cup tie wouldn't be fair to the players or supporters. The candidates know how we feel about them, their abilities and involvement thus far so for good housekeeping and respect all round we've asked candidates to give the team the opportunity to concentrate, play and get us into the next round.

I have wished Demi the very best of luck tomorrow as I know all Shrimpers will, our strength is in our unity and unity is what we need so let's give these boys our energy and positivity, they need it right now. I've offered to go in to say hi tomorrow also, to let them know how special it is to play for Southend United and how the supporter base is waiting to light the blue touch paper to get our season underway and we all, from supporters to the ground staff to the tea lady and the many staff at the club will make our support heard and seem tomorrow. We are Southend United after all.

Alongside a managerial recruitment process which is exactly where we want it to be, a cup tie to savour is a general recruitment process across the football department where candidates have also been sourced, interviewed where appropriate and CV's have been poured over. A cultural change to Southend United is coming and it is universally agreed by Ron and Tom. A club of talents to source, scout, recruit talent for our new manager is underway, something I am particularly excited about.

Tomorrow, bring your voices and your lungs, your love, your patience and plenty of positivity.

Southend United are doing things correctly, in good time off the pitch, working literally 24/7 to build over several key areas. Trust that, know that, take that to the bank.

The boys need is tomorrow, they wear the blue I wore, who Benji and Tilly and Otto and Maher and Barrett and Best wore. Let's inject them with the confidence to play their part in this wonderful club.

He's left because of personal reasons and needing to go back down South which opens him up to you I suppose but his statement didn't sound like he had something lined up the way he was talking about hoping he come to EP on the final day sit in the Cheadle End and watch us win promotion etc.

But wonder if he could have turned himself into a candidate? He was supposedly a coup for us when he joined back up with Rusk in the summer, great coach and all this. I've not seen it out on the pitch I must say.

Like I say, it was more his statement that just didn't strike me as having something lined up. We as fans barely knew him tbh. We still don't full know Rusk yet to be honest. Still not got past his interviews where he just bats away every question with a standard cliche to the point they're barely worth watching.

If he was keeping things under wraps, it'd be for your benefit as he wouldn't have felt the need to be so cloak and dagger about it with us. As I say, we barely knew him. Wants to go back down South to spend more time with family vs wants to go back down South because he's going to Southend. No real difference for me, both are good enough reasons, it's up to him.

No reason he shouldn't throw his hat into the ring with you guys, he's a highly rated coach as I say.

Ok, tonight's update from Stan, which is sounding more and more positive by the day......:

"Good evening all,

Hope you enjoyed the win yesterday, an opportunity to rectify the league defeat against Chesterfield recently, awaits.

As set out last week, a large list of candidates was reduced to a smaller number who were interviewed over 3 days.

Every candidate had as long as they liked to set out how they would manage the team and all noted the professionalism of the process, something new to even longstanding football professionals. That's how we want Southend United to be seen, so that feedback I wanted to pass on to you, as it's important to know the image and work of this great club is changing. Changing for the better!

Ron, Gary, Tom and I have now discussed names in particular roles and most importantly, how those names fit into what we are trying to achieve in the short, medium and long term.

We've dispensed with boom and bust hires. We want Southend United to have a club football structure which decides what the club wants and it's vision ( which will be set out clearly to you guys in the next week or two), not the dangerous cycle of a manager who comes in, rips up the old guy's team, buys his own, only to be sacked a year later.

This leaves great financial waste.
This leaves a disjointed squad.
This leaves no continuity or vision.

This has now changed.


The structure will be manned by the best people, qualified across the board to make decisions that are in the best interests of the club and club alone, with a defined and clear vision of what Southend United is, wants to be and will be. This avoids the 3 points above.

So this managerial search hasn't been about finding a messiah, it's been about finding individuals who can motivate and coach, but also to create, along with other technical staff, a vibrant environment that develops talent, creates a culture of winning on the pitch and off the pitch, is willing to work with equally talented people in other departments at the club and have a clear plan for doing so.

To this end we believe there is a small group of those interviewed that can deliver this from day one. And I believe all 4 on the panel, all very different people, believe the same. We are close.

Tomorrow will be a big day as we now look to all agree the final names for several key roles ( not just manager, we are rebuilding a football department. This has been challenging and exciting but as important as any individual hire).

This will be done as it has in the last 2 weeks. Collegiate, honest, in good humour and with great due diligence. And at the end of this process the reasoning why will be explained to supporters groups, by me at a venue and time of supporters groups choosing. It's vital you understand the thinking behind decisions because it's your football club.

We are firmly on track.


This week will reveal many very good, but most importantly, well thought out things. It may be the most important week in rebuilding Southend United Football Club as a modern, progressive football club.
