Fucking joke of an appointment. I wont be watching another England game. Astounding lack of ambition shown by the FA. Just another "Yes" man.

Well this post is embarrassing isnt it but was my thoughts at the time. I well and truly had to eat my words and eat humble pie. I tip my cap to Gareth. He has done an excellent job.

I don't wished to appear immodest (I'm not that kinda guy - in fact I'm humble to a fault) but I was very pleased to see Southgate appointed at the time. In fact I said on another forum (where they were totally opposed to him) that I thought even if we bombed out of the world cup he should be kept on long term. And give him time to see his plan through to the end.

This has aged well

aged again very well.

only one win in the last 5 matches (against Sweden and even weve beaten them)
but three defeats
only one goal from open play were scored in these matches
Kane scored only once in this period. from the spot.

Well done to Gareth for proving us all wrong. Finishing 4th is an amazing achievement.

Not sure it was an amazing achievement. He brought the country together, adopted the right formation and got the players to believe in him which is half the battle. But then we did strike lucky to get as far as we did. The Columbia shootout could have gone either way and we didn/t meet an elite nation (other than Belgium in two dead rubbers) throughout. I'd call it more promising with room to build for the future.

Well sure if you look at it this way but history will remember that England achieved a World Cup semi-final. Not bad eh?

Jamie Vardy, speaking to the Guardian: “To be honest with you, this has been on my mind for a while.

“I’m not getting any younger and you can see, to be fair to the gaffer, he wants to make it more youthful, which obviously had its benefits during the World Cup – we got to the semi-finals and finished fourth, which is equal to the furthest we have ever been on foreign soil.

So I just said to Gareth that I think it’s probably best from now on, especially with the way he wants to go, to bring youngsters in who he thinks have got the ability and start nurturing them into international football.”

Announces he's retiring at the grand old age of 31 then...

Utterly pointless if Southgate picks the likes of Welbeck instead of a promising youngster imo.

And Gary Chill follows suit:

Quote
Gary Cahill: "In terms of my international future, it's time I take a step back now. I feel that it's the right moment to do that.

"I have been hugely proud of what I have achieved in terms of over 60 caps, I've captained my country on a few occasions which has been a huge honour, it's something I have been really proud of in terms of my career.
"Three major tournaments, I should have had four but I broke my jaw. I've played pretty solid over the seven, eight years I've been involved, something again I've been very proud of.

"I can see now it's going in a younger generation and I think for me to take a step back now is the perfect time.

"At the same time in your football career you never want to shut a door completely. I've been hugely honoured to play for my country and I would never shut the door. If I'm needed in the future, then obviously I'm there.”

Got a few young defenders but what about strikers?

Well, the system only needs one (Kane). After that you'd include Rashford as someone who can play there (although probably more effective in a wide role).

Calvert-Lewin at Everton is the only one who comes to mind that has been playing regularly at the top? Maybe Solanke?

Squad announced tomorrow.

Hoping to see Callum Wilson, Jadon Sancho, Joe Gomez and Luke Shaw given call ups.

Think Sessegnon and Maddison needs to find their feet in the Premier League first before getting fast tracked.

Pretty much as you were really .

Not surprised Lallana has been recalled - key player for England before injury .

Gomez and Shaw back in as well .

Lack of strikers must be a worry if Kane is injured !

Absolute joke that Jay Bothroyd has been overlooked after the season he's had at Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo. It doesn't reflect well on Southgate's opinion of the Japanese Leagues.

About right that team, Vardy, Cahill and Young out, Shaw, Gomez and Lallana come in. Actually think losing Vardy is making us weaker as we are now down to using Danny Welbeck as the bench option and the striking pool beyond is pretty weak.
