He managed to confuse an entire stadium plus himself, I'm sure, a few years ago when he gave us a late penalty against Morecambe, then booked one of our players, sent off one of their players then changed his mind about the penalty.

They are shit, but not as shit as the refs in the National League. A bit like the players.

As football gets quicker (even in league 2) refs have a hard job as it is, one irk though is refs bowing to overbearing players, supporters and managerial staff

I posted in the ten game thread that I think the officials have been below par this season, even when it's favoured Crawley. It's not just the contentious decisions, penalty etc. It's the all round "play". Like giving offside when they are five yards behind play, refs giving fouls from the other end of the pitch.

I'm not a referee's assessor but if you notice it in five games or so then there might be a problem.

Just remembered from our game v Macc in the first half the ref gave them a ridiculous free kick from a perfect tackle (think it was from Hessenthaler but could be wrong) then suddenly he realised he’d fucked up and gave a drop ball where he made the Macc player boot it back to us.

He didn't give Macc a free kick because of a tackle he blew the whistle because the ball hit him from Hessenthalers pass, don't know why he gave Macc the drop ball and not us though.

New rule this season I think that when the ball hits the ref play stops straight away and it's a drop ball.

Ahh right I was a bit baffled at the time and presumed he’d stopped it for a free kick.

Whilst it probably wasn’t handled perfectly by D’Urso, whilst I’m no supporter of his I actually think he’s done what he’s supposed to here.

Exeter player goes into the box, goes over. Ref awards pen as he sees it, but assistant gets his attention it seems both on that and the subsequent shoving match. Side on, the assistant actually may have had better sight on the contact for the pen (or not), given the Exter player was in effect running towards him.

About halfway through them talking you can see one of the Morecambe players nearby nodding and clapping - that’s when I reckon they’ve agreed it’s not a pen. They carry on talking and I reckon that’s about what happened with the players afterwards.

They identify the Morecambe player has (presumably) committed violent conduct, D’Urso calls him over and shows him red. Then shows the Exeter player the yellow for simulation, then restarts with Morecambe free kick, which is entirely within the laws as you can change a decision before the game has restarted.

If it was a dive then D’Urso actually dealt with it as he should, albeit with the added stupidity of the Morecambe lad for getting involved in the melee afterwards.

Otherwise it would have been award the pen, told by assistant it was simulation, change the decision to Morecambe FK and book the Exeter player for simulation.

Yep - revision to law 8, basically the removal of contested drop balls and an additional part where the ball hits the ref (in some but not all situations). If Grimsby had the ball/last touched a GTFC player outside penalty area when it hit the ref and he stops play, you should have had a drop ball at the point it hit it was touched, law extract below if anyone’s bothered!

- If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper
- If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch
- In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m away
- If the ball touches the referee and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a drop ball is awarded to the team that last touched the ball.

Sounds like a ref mistake in interpreting the new law in that case.

He was one of the worst refs I’ve ever seen in the National League so par for the course he got promoted into the Football League.

I thought he was from north Devon. Moreover, I know of no Argyle fan who would want him to referee us again. He is widely reviled down here. Bizarrely, I did see him take a mars bar from a supporter he obviously knew (so he clearly has links with Plymouth) just before a match last year. Which seemed unwise in terms of the optics.
