That Derby team looks so good, but surely Bent has to start? Still a class player, especially for championship.

His goal scoring is good but his overall game is quite woeful to be fair. He isn't a player who works in a team passing game, wants the ball to feet in the box to score. Would expect him to be an impact player for like the last 30 minutes or so.

Not sure myself, but I've seen a few people stating that Gladwin is more of an attacking midfielder? If so, I'd go with your team but probably switch Henry with either him or Luongo.
Best position is playing in the hole. Don't recall him ever playing defensive mid!

What are Bristol City playing at this summer? They must have a hoard of incomings on the way, either that or they've secretly made a cloning breakthrough and are looking at fielding 10 Aden Flint's.

Still seems like a waste to me. You've got enough creativity in the team to give him the chances, and he'll take them. Weimann is surely more of an impact player, with a bit more pace and energy?

I've not seen much of Weimann, so I can't really say to be fair. However, from fans that have seen recent pre season friendlies it seems Bent isn't working so well in our diamond formation while Weimann has done pretty decently. I know it's only pre-season, but it's certainly something to consider.

We have gone backwards by standing still. We have been playing Rowe wide left in friendlies at the moment, the idea of him being the replacement for Sako is baffling, I appreciate he was injured a lot last season, but he looked so average when he was fit that it was like the second coming of Kevin Foley when we used to chuck him into midfield, expect Rowe was like that in every position he lined up in.

Well Kit Symons didn't fancy him at first but now seems to be involved in all the friendly games when the first xi seems to be played. Expect him to be involved. Over 9.5 league goals at 7/2 or something looks nice :)

I wouldn't say his overall game is woeful at all. He's tidy on the ball and he's intelligent. You never see him have a bad touch or run into trouble, the only problem I have with Bent is that he can isolate himself at times. Russell's form, at the minute, makes me think both Weimann and Bent will be on the bench on the opening day.

Grant/Carson; Baird/Christie, Keogh/Pearce, Shackell, Forsyth; Thorne, Hughes, Hendrick, Ince; Russell and Martin

Pringle not disciplined enough to play centre-mid.

Rawson
Mattock

Frecklington
Smallwood

Maguire
Ledesma
Ward

Striker is the issue for the Millers for me, however organised and hard working (as Evan's sides usually seem to be when I have seen them - I say them, I mean Rotherham) could easily see them be a sort of Moyes Everton, in that they rarely had a striker that was firing them in but ground out a lot of wins still.

Assuming Johnstone's loan deal is tied up in the next few days, which seems to be the case.

Johnstone
Clarke, Huntington, Wright
Humphrey, Welsh, Johnson, Cunningham
Gallagher
Garner, Beckford

Jones, Woods, Kilkenny, Browne, Reid, Keane, Hugill
Potentially swap Humphrey for Darikwa.
No idea what formation we will play though tbh, in the play-offs we sort of played a 4-2-2-2 with Kilkenny alongside Welsh and Humphrey on the bench. Wouldn't be surprised if Will Keane is slotted in there somehow, seems to be playing behind the strikers during pre-season.

Fair point - a few were worried where the goals would come through but big things are expected of Danny Ward, Derbyshire ended the season with 11 in 21 and with Ledesma and Maguire I'm feeling confident. Jordan Bowery is generally shite but a good impact player with a knack of scoring off the bench and Jonson Clarke-Harris is raw but has massive talent. Grant Ward has scored 5 in pre-season too, he's a young centre-mid on loan from Spurs.

Got Joe Newell on trial today. Peterborough player of the year last season.

Disagree with the Bowery comment, he has a knack of coming on and scoring, just cos he doesn't do the things a big man is expected to do and run around like that unless c*** Revell doesn't mean he's site.

God wears 27 for us anyway.

Stevie you have to let go with this Revell hating, he's gone BTW.

You are wrong though, forwards do have to run around and pressure defenders into mistakes.
The higher up the pitch you win the ball back generally gives you a better chance of scoring.

Bowery and JCH are young and fit and should be able to do that, until they do they won't start many games in a Steve Evans team.

FWIW I have seen all the pre-season games and both have shown more of a willingness to pressure defenders into mistakes.
They are both improving but have a way to go to get in front of Derbyshire, Danny Ward and Chris Maguire.

Nobody would be more pleased than me to see them both in the team on merit, it would mean both were paying back the money invested in them.

ALF never did it and never has done it and still would score weekly in anybodies starting eleven. They don't have to do it as long as they stick ball in the back of net.

If anybody could be bothered to look I bet Bowery's goal per minute ratio will be ridiculous and I'd go as far as to say his very important goal against Norwich did pay back the money we paid for him.

Your memory is playing tricks.
ALF didn't chase around too much when he first arrived but he was certainly putting the work in before he left.
I don't think ALF would agree with you either.

I wouldn't argue that Bowery scored some very important goals but are you saying Bowery should start in front of Derbyshire, Ward and Maguire?

ALF scored 30 when he first arrived, before he left he added 'running about like a headless chicken' into his game a trait Rotherham fans love and has never score as prolifically since, granted he's played at a higher level but it's no coincidence.

Well Maguire wouldn't and shouldn't be played as a striker, stick him on right wing and yes I think he should be starting games with Derbyshire up front.

Derbyshire was getting slagged to death last season as Bowery was/is but he got a run of starts and has never looked back. We'll never get our money's worth if we don't play him and his record of scoring goals with very limited playing time should prompt Evans to do so.

Not many Premiership teams have the luxury of having a striker that does not work closing defenders down let alone Championship teams.
All the best strikers work hard, on and off the ball.

Bowery has started games and looked very poor, he has come on as a sub and changed games.

That's where he is at the moment and he has to prove he can do it when or if he is given a start.
Like I said earlier, I hope he does.

Maguire's preferred position is as a striker, he said so in his recent interview on joining the Club.

It might be his prefered position but he's not been a regular starter as a striker in his career and would be madness to pick him ahead of good young talent like Ward, Bowery and JCH (which combined cost us over £1m).

Bowery will get a start once he realises he has to apply himself for 90 minutes, so will JCH.
At the moment they don't.

Bowery is frustrating. He comes off the bench, scores, gets a chance from the start and doesn't perform, then repeats it a month later. If we get Newell snapped up it's more backup down the left hand side and we're good to go.

Totally agree with this.
Every time I see Bowery I am praying he will develop into a really good Championship player, he has all the attributes.
It really is up to him, the coaches can only do so much.

I think our best squad barring injuries at the moment looks something like:

GK - Carl Ikeme

RB - Matt Doherty
CB - Richard Stearman
CB - Danny Batth
LB - Scott Golbourne

CM - Kevin McDonald
CM - Conor Coady
RM - Jed Wallace
LM - James Henry

ST - Benik Afobe
ST - Adam Le Fondre

SUB - Aaron McCarey
SUB - Dominic Iorfa
SUB - Kourtney Hause
SUB - Jack Price
SUB - Dave Edwards
SUB - Sheji Ojo
SUB - Nouha Dicko
