Anyone been watching? Very good so far.

As much as we don't see eye to eye, we can relate to the Sunderland. Working class City, proper hard working people who love their club.

1998 play off on there?

Super, super Clive.

Best day of my life, that includes losing virginity, getting married etc. I don’t have kids yet but they’re going to have to be some sexy bastards to beat 25/05/98.

Not many players get voted their clubs greatest ever played at 2 different clubs but super Clive managed it at Grimsby and Charlton, still fucking love the guy to bits, he could’ve moved on to bigger things a few times while here but always stayed loyal, only eventually going to Charlton after we were relegated which nobody blamed him for, then of course was awesome for you guys too.

My favourite ever Charlton player, it’s going to take someone Messi-esque for me to even consider anyone else.

4 episodes in so far. The Man City one was decent but this is far more entertaining.

Commuting to where? Just because Coventry is on the up, doesn't mean it hasn't had its hard times like Sunderland.

Really looking forward to watching this.

The City one was interesting, but it’s easy to follow/manage when top of the league and breaking records etc. I was more interested in the set up they have there.

This one though will hopefully show us what really happens behind closed doors when teams underperform and get relegated

Just watched a couple. It's pretty interesting, and certainly no corporate puff piece like the City one.

However, it feels like someone at Netflix took a decent football documentary and thought 'how do we sell this to an American audience?'. The end result is a lot of naff slow-motion match footage accompanied by dramatic music, and OTT maudlin sentimentality.

Was always going to be really. Netflix would put money into a documentary just focused on an audience of English football fans outside of the Premier league.

I like Sunderland and they are a good set of fans. They love their club no more than we love our club. We all work hard mate to provide for families and follow our clubs,it’s not just a Sunderland thing. One of many clubs who have good loyal support.

Nah mate, it’s still very much rough around the edges. It’s a city that fell out of love with football mind, not that it’s much of a footballing city anyway.

Now this is true. However, the Sunderland documentary is how people in Coventry felt 20 years ago.

Fortunately for Sunderland, they won't suffer the problems we have.

Spotted myself a few times in it, facial expressions varying from dour to extremely dour.

They are currently recording a 2nd series which will hopefully provide happier moments.

I remember going up to Sunderland early January circa 1970 on business, the cold was mind numbing, crossing the river there were still ships being built and on the banks.
Not football related but there were loads of wholesalers in the town and one guy was telling me the story of league clubs which were very popular, I did'nt understand the lingo at first and he explained they were LEEK clubs, the blokes with the biggest won fantastic prizes like colour TV;s and 3 piece suites
Good town, people the salt of the earth

Interesting enough watch, thought the first episode was bizarre with how seriously they were taking a pre-season friendly.

From a production point of view I found it a little irritating when the footage being used was clearly from different games - trying to show the tension getting to Simon Grayson when you could tell he was actually at Hull's ground and the game they were showing was a home game, or an old guy holding a Bury programme when he was meant to be grumpy because they'd just conceded in a different game etc. Obviously very minor details but it bugged me.

Yeah, I'm with you there. Pretty sloppy really, given they will have had reels of footage and didn't need to mix in different games.

I found the whole thing interesting in terms of it giving us a behind the scenes look at the various debacles. You kind of knew why they were such a shambles last season, but this shows exactly what went wrong. All the dross left over from the PL, most of whom didn't want to be there. Losing both their main strikers, a boatload of injuries, no money, etc. All combined to make a big mess.

Their story isn't unique in any aspect, so many clubs fan bases can relate to this. But it was interesting nonetheless.

The editing in parts is dire but hasn't ruined the series on the whole. It's good to have an insight into the innards of the club. The deadline day bits were interesting!

It would be good if we could see more dressing room footage like the Manchester City one, it's better from a comedic tragic kind of view but it could have been even better.

Posted a thread in the television forum with very little replies so happy that there is one here where people are taking an interest.
I agree with the people moaning about the footage and usueless interviews. I watched episode 1 and lost interest really. Just can't see myself watching hours of a side getting beat week after week with heads being down and miserable. Just don't think it's particularly good television.
Maybe I should give the next few episodes, maybe I will but really not sold on the idea. Sounds a bit too cliché for me.

I thought it was a good watch, the Juventus and City ones were about constant highs and the lows were never that low, this is good for comedic value, Bain quite clearly is using it as some form of vanity parade for his watches, if he was made of chocolate the bloke would probably eat himself. If it had shown dressing room footage and fall outs it would have been probably the best one yet.

The song used in the opening credits by The Lake Poets is excellent. They need to adopt that as a club anthem

And I had a right lump in my throat watching Williams almost in tears talking to the Sports Psychologist. All we see is footballers earning obscene money and assume they're living the dream. It can actually become a nightmare for plenty of good players

Started watching this tonight, enjoying it though do completely agree about the dodgy and overdramatic editing. It's reminding me a fair bit of the general feeling during Pompey's slump, so that's keeping my attention span/tolerance of the constant miserable club drama up!

Hopefully yesterday's game is heavily featured in Season 2. :ds:

edit: my overriding feeling after 3 and a bit episodes is that Martin Bain seems like a gigantic, narcissistic wanker, I imagine I’m not alone in that thought

Just finished it. I thought that it was good, overall. Yes, the crowd-noise didn't really match the action at times, but a certain artistic licence is to be expected.

What the series did very well was to convey how much the club means to the fans, and just how much impact such a fall has on a community.

Also, the Jonny Williams stuff was great at showing just how much self doubt can affect a player when they have constant injuries and aren't able to nail down a starting position. Very brave of Williams to let the psychologist meeting be recorded and shown.

Bain, obviously didn't come off well with his tight shirts and expensive watches. He seemed to be continually distancing himself from the disaster he was presiding over. Special mention for Lewis Grabban and Jack Rodwell who came across as right mercenaries who couldn't really care less about the club.

Did have some sympathy for Darron Gibson. Definitely seemed to care for the club but clearly has a drink problem.
