Have you seen the stat of what Root has averaged since his recall after being dropped for last ashes test? Averaging 98 or so where he is, he's in the form of his life. You don't move him.

Maybe, but would you want to risk disruting his form? And if you make him captain you take out Cook, so who do you open with? Lyth in atm, inexperienced at test level, who do you partner with him? Hales - inexperienced at test level, Ali - Maybe but not doing well enough saw him moved elsewhere in order so step backwards, Compton - Same problem as a top order of Cook, Lyth and Ballance. Need to stick with Cook for until the end of summer/over the winter imo. Blood Lyth and if Cook's form doesn't improve then you remove him when there is an opener with experience to bring in a new guy at the top.

Take the captaincy from Cook and you might see his form improve.

Then you also have the case of having the former captain in the changing room, doesn't always go well and often best to let the new skipper do things his way and drop the old captain.

I wouldnt bet on it. He seems to have been found out.
Many sides have thought that over the years to their cost , he needs an opening partner who is aggressive to allow him to accumulate runs his way .however His captaincy is a different issue

He's been found out many times before. He always finds a way to score runs. He just shouldn't be captain, he offers nothing as captain when he's not scoring runs. It does him no good and it does the team no good.

Getting really tired of hearing about KP now. Rather than focus on our young players turning the game on its head early on yesterday, all we hear is KP.

Fucks sake. Hypocritical as fuck, it's the media that's been loving the whole situation.

Two openers down - but they have the middle order to take this game away from us.

Kiwis going along nicely now - has the feel of a drawn test with the batsmen dominating already unless there is a sudden collapse!

Not watching. Is New Zealand batting well as the score suggests, or is it shit captaincy?

A mix of both. Cook has been awful. It took 35 overs before he even turned to Ali and he then prompty went and got a wicket in his second over and Root has only bowled 2 overs!

I think the captaincy needs to be taken from him, not saying he's a terrible batsman but if it was based on form alone he would of been dropped by now. He's not a very good tactician at all, the only thing that's saved him so far is that there isn't any obvious captain replacements imo.

I wasn't entirely serious about Root being captain yesterday but after Cook today, I'm actually hoping it happens before the Ashes kick off.

I think questions need to be asked about the way in which we select our captain.

We seem to assume that if someone can bat, they'd automatically be a good captain. I think it's fair to say that Cook's captaincy is below par. In reality, unless his cricket knowledge and tactical awareness has regressed [the opposite to what you'd expect], he must have never really been suitable captain material. So why the frick did he get the job? Surely to be identified as a potential future captain, you must demonstrate qualities beyond run scoring?

This is why I'm a little skeptical about the clamour for Root to become captain. Does he have genuine captain potential? Or are we getting carried away because he's scoring runs?

Nice ground the Ageas Bowl - watched Day 3 of the England vs India Test there last Summer

Edwards has just blew away the Kent batting lineup - two massive wickets in two balls and they have a massive job on their hands to save this game.

He speaks a good game and shows intelligence at the crease. Obviously that's only 25% of the job but then we don't know what he's like around the dressing room, I do however get the feeling that he's well thought of and respected at such a Young age too.

The thing is, the captaincy needs to change and we have quite a young squad. Looking at our line-up I can't see any other candidates, I don't see anyone like Buttler or Ballance fitting the bill. It'll be Broad though, guarantee it.

Whilst I agree that we seem to be lacking a replacement for Cook, I don't think we should make someone captain purely because there is a lack of alternatives. We should make sure they are the right person for the job first, and then think about preparing them for the role.

If Joe Root really is future captain material, then we should definitely look to give him more responsibility in preparation for taking over from Cook. But if the demand for Root to be the next captain is simply because he's our best player and no one else can do the job, then I'd rather we stick with Cook until a more suitable candidate comes to light. As you point out, only the people in the dressing room can really know which of these is the case.

I'm happy either way, just so long as we don't stifle Root's batting by burdening him with the captaincy if he isn't up to it. We don't want Root to turn into Cook 2.0.

Michael Vaughan has said that senior players in the Yorkshire dressing room were listening to what Root had to say when he was 18. I know MV likes to talk Yorkshire up, but that says something.

Edwards didn't take any wickets, in fact his first over he went for four 4's.

Alex Blake was exceptional last night, very good result against a good T20 side.

I realised I'd posted it wrong when I did - it was the other spinner, but his name has gone from my mind.

Not liking these England jumpers, just something about the pattern stopping at chest height or so.

Great take from Buttler!
