Derby County: Will Hughes to undergo surgery after suffering cruciate knee ligament injury
Will Hughes is to undergo surgery on damage to his cruciate knee ligament
Scans have shown that the 20-year-old midfielder suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage in his right knee in the first half of Saturday's goalless draw against Bolton Wanderers at the Macron Stadium.
He will now undergo surgery. Hughes was injured when he appeared to get his studs caught in the turf and his leg twisted awkwardly before he went down.
He immediately signaled to the bench and was clearly in some distress. The signs did not look good and he was carried off on a stretcher.
Hughes started 42 of Derby's 54 fixtures last season and came off the bench in six others.
He has made 137 appearances for the club having come through the Academy.
Hughes' injury is a cruel setback for the player, and the club who lost midfielder George Thorne to an ACL injury last summer.
Thorne was out for seven months before he returned for two matches against Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic late in February.
He then picked up a thigh injury and did not play again for the rest of the season.
I'll give it a month before George Thorne is out for the season too.
Derby County is pleased to announce that the Club’s Chairman, Mel Morris, has successfully completed the purchase of the club from North American Derby Partners LP for an undisclosed sum.
I hope together we can help steer this club back into a sustainable place in the Premier League."
Mel re-invested in the club in May 2014, taking a 22% holding prior to the disappointment of the play-off final against QPR. The acquisition process began in May 2015 when Mel assumed the position as Club Chairman.
Mel, who is a life-long Rams fan, is widely regarded as one of Derby’s most successful businessmen. On becoming the sole owner of the club, Mel said: “Whilst I firmly believe that the club’s ownership is very much a tertiary concern to most fans, I hope together we can help steer this club back into a sustainable place in the Premier League.
“We have many of the key components in place, but I am conscious that we must all commit our total support in pursuit of this goal, which I know is shared by all of us, as fans of this great football club.”
“I wish to pay tribute to the North American Ownership group, who collectively provided the finance and leadership stability the club needed following the traumatic times which followed the 2007/08 season in the Premier League.
“They have been terrific to work with and I am sure they will continue to follow the Rams well into the future.”
No changes are planned in the club’s executive team who will continue to be managed by Sam Rush as Chief Executive Officer. A new board of directors will be announced in due course.
Later this month, the club plans to invite a number of fans to meet with Mel and Sam, together with the executive and coaching teams, to hear more about the club’s vision and plans for the current season and beyond.
Note:
North American Derby Partners LP includes some of the leading sports team investors in North America, namely:
Tom Ricketts - Managing Partner of the Chicago Cubs baseball team
W. Brett Wilson - Investor of the Nashville Predators NHL hockey team
Jeff Mallett - Former Yahoo! president, current co-owner of the Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club and is also a Principle Partner of the world champion San Francisco Giants Baseball team
Bill Luby - Managing Partner of Seaport Capital, which was the former owner of eight different minor league baseball teams

WILL Hughes is available for Derby County's squad this weekend, says head coach Darren Wassall.
Hughes has recovered from the serious knee injury he suffered in the Rams' opening Championship fixture of the season against Bolton Wanderers.
The midfielder has been training with the first-team squad for almost six weeks and played for an hour in the under-21s' victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday.
"Will came through unscathed and so he is available for selection. He is fit and raring to go," said Wassall.
Ironically, Derby play Bolton on Saturday, although Hughes is also down to play for the under-21's in their clash with Arsenal at the Ipro Stadium on Monday.
"The under 21s are top of the League and if they beat Arsenal on Monday night, they are champions," added Wassall.
"It is a really great advert for our Academy which is important for us at this club and I am delighted for Rory Delap and Justin Walker, who have taken over the reins of the under 21
Derby County have made an official complaint to the Football League after bitter rivals Nottingham Forest failed to pay a £90,000 bill.
The League are investigating after receiving a complaint from Derby over a late payment related to money from ticket sales for last month's game at the iPro Stadium. Forest have failed to pay their East Midlands neighbours on time for the second successive year and Derby have notified the League for assistance.
Championship clubs have to reconcile the monies from seats sold to their supporters at away grounds within a week after the game, but Forest have missed the deadline.
Derby were unavailable for comment but Forest said they are aware of the issue and intend to pay the outstanding balance on the 13th.
Fawaz Al Hasawi, the Forest chairman, has not employed a chief executive since the departure of Paul Faulkner last year and is facing increasing criticism from supporters.
He has admitted he will consider walking away and it is understood that Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis has expressed interest in a possible takeover.
Forest are also looking for a new manager after the dismissal of Dougie Freedman and face Brighton at the City Ground on Monday night.
Derby County defender Craig Forsyth has suffered a second major knee injury in the space of 10 months, the club has confirmed.
Scans have revealed that Forsyth ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Saturday's goalless draw with Aston Villa at the iPro Stadium.
It is the same injury which forced him to miss a large part of last season.
Forsyth is due to undergo surgery in the coming days before starting what is likely to be another long road to recovery.
The left-back made his first competitive appearance since November in the recent EFL Cup first round win against Grimsby Town.
He has scored Derby's only league goal so far this season - heading an 87th-minute winner at Preston last week.
The Scotland international has made 131 appearances for Derby since joining the club from Watford in 2013.
